Even singers seem to be at the mercy of bollywood bigwigs despite their undeniable talent ... it's unfortunate, really.

They should probably start inviting singers who can pack a powerhouse performance to fashion shows the way Victoria's Secret does every year. Who do you think can perform the way Rihanna performed Diamonds? Sunidhi perhaps? I don't know female singers beyond Sunidhi and Shreya. Oh wait, and Kanika.

Because in the west music and movies are two different universes. For us it is one and the same. Name your top 10 songs and chances are majority of them are movie soundtracks if not all. And if they are movie soundtrack guess who we focus on, the actor who acts out the song rather than the singer who sings it. Even when indian pop had a bigger scene movie music pretty much dominated music industry. I am glad youtube exists and has become such a big thing for music. And even though I do not care for any trash songs Badshah, Neha, Yoyo honey singh, Tony work on I like that it is separate than our movie industry and it is starting to get bigger.

Of course music politics and the giant record labels are also one of the biggest factors. For me though everything starts with the fans. So I keep my focus there.

Yes I agree. If the music artists have less profiles w their own music rather than filmy music it’s something that’s been there for sometime. Atleast we have likes of Baadshah and Honey Singh making their own songs now. I can’t even think of singers who did that before the 90s. We’re there any ? Falguni Pathak ? She old right ?

Falguni had a good run but it wasn't exactly the 90's ... most likely 2000's. But yeah, she's old now. There were a lot of pop albums coming out around then ... mostly old songs remixed into peppy numbers. Does Kaanta Laga ring a bell? 😆 Piya Basanti Re is another popular one. I don't know if they make albums like that anymore but most of them featured aspiring models/dancers ... they eventually entered bollywood or TV shows.

Not a fan of Honey Singh but I like some of the songs by Badshah... nothing can turn it up like Abhi Toh Party Shuru Huwi Hai!

Kaanta Laga

Even TMs beloved Sonu Nigham made his own songs in 90s

If anything the state of the non filmy singer in India is better now than its ever been 👌

Yeah I figured you'd know about Kaanta Laga... that girl caught everyone's attention at the time. 😆

I don't know if there are exclusively non-filmy singers so to speak ... most of them seem to start out in bollywood playback singing and branch out after seeing some success. That includes Badshah, I think. I can't say for sure if things have improved from the 90s to now. Sonu had that Deewana album and a bunch of others in the beginning that are still remembered fondly by many. Adnan Sami also had some pretty good albums of his own. Not to forget that Himesh Reshammiya phase too ... 😆

I feel singers were much more popular earlier than they are now

Rafi - Kishor - Lata - Asha have legendary status amongst Indian audiences even today. On par with actors and actresses of that generation. My dad tell me, crappy movies with non-actors used to become hits simply because Rafi/Kishore had sung songs in them.

Even during 90s-2000s, Sonu/Udit/Sukhi/Sunidhi were very popular and loved beyond their playback persona. It helped that they were very humble and likable personalities also. Indi Pop was also much more active during this time - guys like Sonu, Shaan, Kailash, Adnan would dish out albums regularly and they were HITS.

Then came auto-tune and ruined it all. All singers started sounding the same and there was no individuality left. The rappers came through and made things worse. And then the final straw was actors singing themselves and the endless remixes. Today's pop music scene is so dead - Kakkars and Bagchis have ruined it all. We have Arijit, no doubt, but then we also have a dozen Arijit clones

i read all the comments ...one wrote that west moives and music is a different thing altogether might be its the real cause ....i remember when amir khan said that actors make the song famous Sonu went to his home for asking him not to take music in his films and then promote it ...and sonu said in 2010 that " main toh chahata he yahi hun ke india me films me ganay band hojanay chaiya .. film music ne independet music ko bhout nuqsan pohcnhaya hai
