and by the way udit alka might be singing from early 80's but their major hit was only qyamat se qayamat tak ..in contrary to that sonu had many major hits of the 90s era to his credit
I know Alka and Udit's first major hit was QSQT and even though the film came out in 1988 I don't call them the 80s gang, but the 90s gang.
Its always about who were mainstream popular and considered "heroes" in their field at the time. Sonu definitely contributed, no one denies that. He started gaining his popularity in 1995/96, at a time when our 90s brigade was ruling. Sonu's establishment happened in 1997 with popular songs and later, the private album Deewana (1999) after which he became a common and popular choice for the actors.
Then in 2000 that he became an A Lister and sang almost every song on albums, replacing the 90s singer, just like Shaan and KK. After that he was the king till 2010, after which newer singers replaced him. So its a cycle.
Like no one can put SRK and Salman in the same decade bracket as Tiger and Varun even though the seniors are still working.
I have never been a huge Rahman fan barring very few songs. Never liked the sounds and structure and I will always hold resentment because it was his synth sound taking over which killed live orchestra. The 90s brigade of composers tried to save it as much as they could but once few of them stood up against the Copyright Act, they stopped getting work. The labels found a new way to save money so they did the remaining nonsense of curbing the livelihood of musicians.
For me Illayaraja and MM Keeravani will always be superior from South and I wish we had more of them in Bollywood. But that's our loss not theirs.

now this time i agree u are saying with popularity perspective my saying was for contribution perspect ..although sonu became A lister in 2000 replacing 90's kumar sanu but this will not reduce the impact of kumar sanu hits in 2000 this was what i wanted to convey , although kumar sanu was not a A lister in 2000 yet he had some memorable songs to his credit .....and on composer part i guess MM kareem songs are great he had not given much chances like rehman to proof himself ....rehman was great till ghajni 2008 .....he was the one who introduced new and modren sound to bollywood music which helped people to get ridd of that typical dholak tabla style of songs lol although rehman is slightly overrated ,,, i mean he is now called larger then life thing but his contemprories never got the same amount of adulation

OT: To each their own I guess.
@quotes bit : Each country has their own style of music which makes them unique. Sure they imbibe different styles but they will never take over their original style. Rahman caused that over Westernisation which has made Indian music lose its uniqueness. Westernising never caused our songs to get popular otherwise why would Shankar-Jaikishan be huge names in Russia? We already had Western sounds in India, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, RD Burman, Bappi Lahiri, Jatin-Lalit, Viju Shah, Anand-Milind had used Western styles very well. ARR wasn't the first.
The dholak-tabla style originated from India and very few people have maintained it. That was our USP. Thats why the veterans and few from after 2010 will be remembered as legends...the Western ones will disappear into oblivion after few years.
@bold: He did something new. But he is nowhere close to many South composers. There is too much media hype for him, one I never understood since I was a child. Its a fact that ARR's style ruined the essence of our music style which has led to or songs being wannabe versions of English songs.

Everyone except that hateful, nasally and weird sounding Abhijeet. He had so many good songs and every time I listened to them I am like gross that unattractive voice... It only suited SRK when he was unattractive. Then he became attractive and it no longer suited him.

westren touch in songs if done in a classy way will become classic too to sonu was the pioneer of westernised singing in bollywood with yeh dil dewana from pardes but it was real western touch unlike today songs who just sing hindi song in english style .....and for that matter 90's had become so much repitative ,,,,again i would quote kumar sanu here ...as people say listen to one kumar sanu song u have heard all his carrier he have almost sung same kind of tunes over and over again which are nadeem shravan music ....ar rehman brought a change for better and it was a fresh start ...music of taal and dil se is something classy in a modren way
lol ...but fortuantly its not a joke :D read a music review from 1999
Haseena Mann Jayage
Next we have a romantic number YUN HUA with SONU accompanying ALKA YAGNIK again. It's no "TUJHE DEKHO TO..." but is a pleasant break from the fast-paced numbers in the film. Sonu begins to suit Alka more and more once you listen to the soundtrack since KUMAR SANU is currently on a self-imposed hiatus. The number is on ChiChi and Lolo in the film incidentally.

dont mix abhijeet opinions with his singing ..no one can sing this song as beautiful as abhijeet did
Others are still singing frequently in Bollywood..But I really miss Abhijeet he still has an amazing voice.
All are equally good for a comeback.
