Ya so there are a lot of old songs from 50s to 90s which were done well without losing the essence of our music. Actually it was ARR's style which caused today's composers to make these Westernized kind of songs. And then I am not a fan of ARR at all, he is technically very sound but that's about it for me.
@ bold: Nadeem-Shravan were the only composers of the 90s who were monotonous. The rest: Anand-Milind, Jatin-Lalit, Anu Mallik (even though he plagiarised) were very versatile. True Western sound incorporated with Western synth sound was done by Viju Shah. So its not correct to generalise all of them. Later composers like Said-Wajid, Pritam, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Himesh Reshammiya also followed the same formula as the 90s batch and that's why are more popular than the likes of Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Sulaiman. The last two I mentioned are also talented but their work gets lost somewhere. I was proven right when Pyarelal ji did a version of 'Shukran Allah' which was much more superior to the original version and added so much personality to the song.
Rahman's work and style led to more damage than do good and thats a fact. Observe how music has gotten into a down spiral and you'd see it too. There was nothing so nouvelle about it, instead his mentor Illayaraja is a much more superior composer. I do not understand any South language but the tunes are brilliant. Again, that's our loss and not Illayaraja's.
One & only Udit Narayan! His voice still sounds so fresh. I remember when he sang in the song Radha from SOTY. You could hear his voice over all the other singers. He has so much power in his voice.
