Indian movie audience is unpredictable, I feel. A movie like October which was designed for the classes and a movie like Street Dancer purely for the masses earned the same amount. A gay love story got 60 crores ( Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan) whereas a movie with sports theme and rise of the underdog - two motifs which are universally cliched but acceptable - struggled to earn 25 crores. Movies with messed up characters like Kabir Singh and Sanju earned 300 crores almost. Judgemental Hai Kya which was also about a messed up character barely broke even.

India's population : 138 Crores

Sanju footfalls : 2 Crores

Kabir Singh footfalls : 2 Crores

October, Street Dancer, SMZS and JHK footfalls in total : Less than 1 Crore.

Total footfalls of all movies : Around 3 Crores

In total population of India which is 138 Crores, only 3 Crore people watched all these movies in theaters.

In short, it's a big country with different people with different likings and dislikings. Nothing unpredictable in different people watching different movies.

Star power, director, tone, subject matter, genre, quality, publicity are all factors..

For example:

Sanju was about a popular larger than life real life figure with a star done by a very successful high profile director.

Kabir Singh was a recent remake of a very popular film - so it had built in publicity and subject matter audiences have already shown they liked.

JHK had none of that going for it with the subtraction of bad publicity courtesy of it's star.

I can never understand how misogynist movie like Kabir Singh can be such a massive hit !!

also success of movies even depend on which actor is staring in it .. unfortunately some of the shittiest movie earn 200-300 crores cos of star powers where as movies with amazing story lines and strong characters barely gets any acknowledgement cos it doesn’t star any popular actor

October (37cr) and SD3 (64cr) did not earn anywhere near the same amount. Even the SD3 opening day was more than double of October's opening simply due to the overall feel and appeal being more preferable to the masses. Similarly, KS and Sanju were commercial entertainers and had that universal appeal from the trailer/songs as well as star power where as SMZS, Panga, and JHK seemed quite niche.

Our audience is quite simple and straightforward. Present entertaining content in a large scale manner and you will surely bring in the crowds.

The reason Kabir Singh is a hit because we live in a patriarchal society where a woman or anything female is considered as an object and has an ownership.

India is a diverse country with millions of languages and dialects. In many states people prefare watching movies in their local language. All the movies have to be dubbed for viewership.

Are we only going to make movies on only stand up guys ? I mean Sanju movie had scenes where he says " f**k one or 00 or 200 women lets round them off to 300" women are things right ?

Kabir Singh was who he is ... there was no sob -lame story to defend him. A story of an asshole who always got what he wanted...a story of a rich brat , who also happened to be a brilliant student and surgeon.

Film reviewers like Anupama and sucharita have no depth .... show depravity in the whole movie and do not give him the girl in the end and they hail it as redemption. Thats bull... there is no rule bad ppl suffer and good ppl come on top.

Maybe Anupama should talk about how her Husband's super hit movies make a joke of everything including Rapes.

I wonder why only Kabir singh jogged everyones conscience. For me Kabir Singh was an engaging story of 2 Borderline abusive couple.
