Why is Amitabh's surname Bachchan and not Srivastav?

I dont know if this was discussed before in this forum. I was just reading Wikipedia of Harivansh Rai Bachchan and it's written there that Srivastav was his surname and Bachchan was his pen name.

I wonder why Amitabh kept his surname Bachchan and not Srivastav when he was not writer at all like his father? Maybe he used his father's pen name to get name and fame quickly. Or maybe he thought people will give him job quickly when they will know he is Harivansh Rai Bachchan's son.

The same reason Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia doesnt his real name. They sound too uncool for a superstar

Because Bachchan was his father's pen name. Harivansh Rai opposed the caste system so he dropped 'SHRIVASTAVA'.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Do they even know where Shrivastavas come from? There's no caste system shit going on there. 😆

Harivanshrai dropped his surname and adopted his pen name as surname when he faced resistance from his community to his inter caste marriage. In protest he refused to give his children his "caste" name.

Why, because his wife was a Khatri Punjabi? What does that have to do with his surname?

His community (family, cousins etc;) were hostile towards his marriage to Teji so in protest he dropped the surname which probably he thought was the link between him and his community. Caste and all is the hogwash added later to the story to give him a woke image.

Intercaste marriages weren't huge back in the day so that makes sense. Honestly Kayasthas are the last people who focus on casteism etc. There were traces of it back in the day but now, they're probably the most liberal and chilled ones out there. Its sad he dropped his surname because Kayasthas hardly get any representation in the industry. If only everyone knew how cool their story is

Why is Rakesh Roshan's name Rakesh Roshan, not Rakesh Nagrath? Why is Nitin Mukesh's name Nitin Mukesh? Because people tend to show off that they are special. Hence when they get a prestigious title, they add that with their name, later their kids add the title too. That's how some caste-based surnames disappear and new surnames replace them. Like Raibahadur, Chaudhary, Pataudi etc.

I'm sure the Roshans are still Nagrath on their documents. Roshan sahab used only his first name and the rest used his name as their surname for work.

Similar to how music director Chitragupta Shrivastava used his first name...his sons use Anand-Milind as their stage name but they're normally known as Anand/Milind Chitragupta or Anand/Milind Shrivastava. The rest of their family must be Shrivastavas only.
