I finally read 'The Namesake' by Jhumpa Lahiri and what a beautiful book. It was an utter joy to read...a glowing story of a tiny family making the voyage between two worlds. I wanted to read the book before watching the movie, because I've heard very good things about the movie as well and have been putting off watching it until I completed the book.

Has anyone seen the movie and would you recommend it??

The movie is good but as with many remakes of the book, something gets lost because of time constraints. Irfan and Tabu were very good though.

I looove the book. Jhumpa's writing is so immaculate and detailed.

I have feelings attached to the book so refuse to watch the movie.

As all book turned movies, the book was definitely MUCH BETTER than the movie! Still the movie was well made and had 2 excellent actors- Taboo and Irrfan in the lead roles.

Loved the movie! As a child of immigrant parents, it was so relatable.

I read the book before watching the movie. Was gripped to the book, especially the first half.

I remember about 11 years ago, I was at an amusement park but my mind wouldn't leave Ashima's world of thoughts. The book was on another level when it was from Ashima's perspective, got a bit drab when the narrative switched to Gogol.

As someone who gets called a "coconut", I could identify with some of the aspects growing up as an adolescent but Gogol's ambivalence towards his parents and overall dickishness was a downer seeing as it's all the reader delves into for a good half of the book.

The movie was great in its own way, I think Kal Penn made Gogol more humanising and empathetic. That's one win the film had over the book.

His breakdown scene still stays, I think when Irfan Khan passed, it must have crossed people's mind.

Interpreter of maladies is another one time read by Jhumpa Lahiri, winner of the Pulitzer prize.

Yes and it’s such a great movie. Irfan, Tabu and Kal Penn are so freaking good ❤️. The movie was relatable to me.

I read the book afterwards and read other books by the same author.

I've read that long ago, when I was 15. During a particularly long summer holiday. It was the year 2000, and I remember not understanding certain aspects. Need to revisit that book again.

I loved The Lowland too, especially the character of Gaujri. Though perceived as selfish by some, I identified as I am also very bookish by nature.
