Music is music. It is either good or bad; not North/south/east/west indian. This regionalism which runs so deep In Indus is part of the problem like when kunika mahajan speaks to this bespectacled girl n says “you Patna people” ...and then when caught onto that...takes a u turn n says oh sushant was such a bright shining star and it is you who is limiting him to a state...like I seriously have no words.

In essence, it’s your talent, but the labels reap not only the profits but also the benefits cuz they can have another singer do a cover/remake etc.

This is similar story even in the west, although it seems the situation is evolving with many singers buying back their songs from recording labels. I am not sure BW is doing that, or can do that.

So I get ARRs frustration. It’s not only that the whole music industry sucks right now, you add the politics to survive, it’d take the willpower of a a saint not to feel embittered .

Those are two different scenarios dear. One is of getting work and the other is royalty. Veterans who have revolted against the system have been sort of banned. Thats the reason u don't hear Anand-Milind, Viju Shah, Sonu Nigam today.

Up till 2017 or something music companies would pocket full royalties, even the composer and lyricists share which is a crime. When IPRS got reformed and the Copyright Bill got passed in 2012 (yes, even after that no music company followed the law), then i am assuming royalties started flowing to the correct people. But royalty distribution is not an artist's job, the respective Performing Rights Society has to do that.

Now coming to what you are saying, even if cover versions are made, only the singer's royalty share will change. Because the tune and lyrics are the same. But labels are cheating by not giving the name and the money. Aankh Maare was the biggest hit in recent times...why is Tanishk Bagchi's name given? Its Viju Shah's work!

Another thing you said about the label having control, I am no lawyer but there is one thing I imagine. A Music Director and Lyricist gives a label permission to publish the song for a particular film ONLY. Idhar singer ka bhi say nahi hoga because they are performing the song, not making it. The label also holds the rights only for a decided number of years, after which it is illegally pocketing the money. A new contract would have to be drawn up after the old one expires, like a lease. The music director and lyricist would either chose another label or continue with the same one. The music company is only a publisher, they don't own anything. Intellectual Property Rights are always with the creator. If someone is studying Law or is a Lawyer, please correct me if I am wrong!

But idhar badmaashi hoti hai. Illegal contracts that Sonu and others refused to sign so they were removed from films and boycotted in a way. I hope its more clear now what the picture is like, I had read about all of this since few years so this is what I imagine the entire scenario to be like.

Everybody that speaks up has “fallen from grace” because these status quo loving sheep do not want any change, anywhere in the world. I swear I get migraine reading some posts on here. How hard is it to understand that silence doesn’t create change.
