I still believe as a producer he can hire anyone he wants. It's his money. But the fact that Karan calls and lobbies for her in other movies like Udta Punjab and Highway is just weird. I don't even know why? I can understand if a father or mother was doing it for their child. But what does Alia have on Karan? Why is he so involved? Why does he even care what she's doing outside of Dharma? I'm stumped.
His SOTY kids doing well gave him the power he had sought his whole life. Before Alia/Varun, his image was of a chamcha of SRK. After SOTY, he is seen as an equal of top actors, not a sidekick. He is obsessed with Alia because she listens to his diktats, Varun doesn't, and Sid's movies aren't working. If Alia's career goes down Kjo's value in the industry will also go down. (ETA- It's like couples' image. I remember after Kaka's three back to back flops including the disaster BV, people started calling Katty flop, even though she hadn't given any flop yet. It affected her image... When Phantom released, it did good during weekends, but still people kept calling it flop, it did below average/not an outright flop business, would not have affected Katty much if she hadn't gotten the flop tag form her boyfriend.) Kjo knows it, hence he's taken Jaanu and Pee as backup. Two more flops by Alia, Kjo will start lobbying for Jaanu. He's already started it by giving her a Zoya Akhtar project.
He lives vicariously through his fav celebs. The more successful his mentees are more power he gets. He intentionally keeps bragging about how he got Alia this project and that to show off his power.
And him not producing the projects he lobby for his pille, it's for credibility. Like how the industry parents like their kids to be debuted from someone else's banner instead of producing them. Some of these low budget movies for which he lobbies, he sometimes give them financiers...it's always a friend of Kjo (Sometimes he himself) who produces the film that he lobbied for.
