Even, I was venting out on the industry and blaming them for his death. But the more I thought about it, I realized, that while they might have driven him to desperation, the ultimate call to take his life was his own. We can accuse the industry of being enablers, but we cannot hold anyone personally responsible for a decision that an individual takes. Unless, Sushant had left a note behind, specifically stating that so and so was responsible for him taking this decision, no one can be held culpable.
But I completely get the reaction and grief coming for Sushant from most people. It is coming from a place of not just deep sorrow that a promising young man had to die like this, but also immense fear. We all have such young people in our lives, as our children, cousins, siblings, nephew, nieces and friends... who have everything going right for them. What if tomorrow, they too are in a situation that Sushant was in? What if they too are bullied and stigmatized and victimized? What if they too fall into depression and decide to end their lives?
Most of us normal folks can admire the likes of Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, but we cannot identify with them. We identify with people like Sushant and Rajkummar Rao and Ayushman Khurana, who came from nowhere and became something...defying every possible odd. So when one of them is snuffed out in this manner, it hits us where it hurts most.
The reaction and anger on behalf of Sushant is the most natural thing that is happening. It might be misplaced and misdirected, but is is completely and wholly organic.
