How long does one have to stay and work in Canada legally.. to achieve PR in recent times?

There are all kinds of different pathways depending on country of origin, education, etc. The one I am most familiar with for Indians is for highly educated people in areas where there aren’t enough American citizens like doctors and engineers and it’s literally decades. Many give up and go back to India or switch to commonwealth country.

Check this out if you have time to read article

I don’t remember the details, but Akshay had PR in Canada for a while. Basically, he took his dad for prostrate cancer treatment in 2008/2009 to Toronto, and there’s even an article I had read that he had PR before that, so that he/ his father could use the Canadian healthcare system benefits.

Then he produced Speedy Singhs with Ajay Virmani (the bachpan ka dost he’s talking about) as a favour to launch his son, Vinay Virmani, in 2009/2010, and some other movies he did (Thank You etc) were all shot in Canada as well. So maybe he had invested plenty of money through that scheme as well. He was in Canada for a long period during that time and probably fulfilled his PR requirements then.

There are rumours he was close to a Canadian govt official who speeded up his passport process as well. But he’s basically acknowledged that he became a Canadian citizen in 2012, in the official statement he put out.

EDIT: this article has pretty much the whole summary - Akki apparently got Canadian PR way back in 2001, got his father treated in Mississauga (Toronto suburb) and owns plenty of property in the Greater Toronto Area. Virmani connection isn't mentioned but the then prime minister of Canada, Steven Harper, connection is mentioned - https://theprint.in/india/akshay-kumars-canadian-roots-go-deeper-from-campaigning-for-a-pm-to-owning-mansion-there/235401/
