Poor choices doesn't mean he didn't have a fanbase or wasn't bankable. Yes he was limited to one genre but the biggest superstars like Amitabh, Rajesh Khanna, Salman, SRK also have depended on one genre for their whole career to reach the top.

Only fanbase alone can't help. In the earlier decades Bollywood, rom-coms used to pull the audience the most. And the names that you mentioned above (Amitabh, Rajesh Khanna, Salman, SRK), all of them have had been good at Rom-coms. Among them on Sallu switched his genre to action genre when he noticed that it's more bankable for him.
Had Bobby been stick with actions rather than straying, then definitely he could help himself.

Bichoo is one of Bobby's popular films which didn't do that well at box office.

I'll always like him for Gupt and Soldier.

Abhishek had a few good movies too. I like Yuva, Guru, Bluffmaster and Bunty aur Babli. He just got lazy and stopped trying.

He was also good in Dostana, LoC. I really liked his bit in LoC!

SRK is on other level he literally accomplished everything you can in bollywood even if his movies dont work anymore he'd still be remembered in 20-30 years

He has few big hits with Barsaat, Soldier and Gupt and Badal in his filmography. These films were bigger hits in the 90s decade in comparison with Akshay and Ajay solo hits. Both have limited hits to their credit..But Abhi got more critical acclaim for movies like Guru n Yuva.. He was crushed under legacy.

Bobby was mediocre. Only thing going for him was his dimpled smile..Will remember him for flashing that in Kareeb

Abhishek didn't have any big hits like Barsaat, Soldier or Gupt. His only solo hit is Guru which was a fluke. He was like Arjun and Sid who too had flukes with 2 States and Ek Villain.

Bobby was more like what Varun and Tiger are today. Having big hits in his kitty which means he had a fanbase.
