Student Of The Year 2 REVIEW:

In Typical Karan Johar Narrative, Ananya Panday And Aditya Seal Steal The Show And Are The USP Of This Soulless Sequel

Written By Radhika Sarkar | Mumbai | Published: May 10, 2019 12:33 IST

Seven years back, ace-filmmaker Karan Johar launched three debutants in Bollywood through 'Student of The Year'- Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, and Alia Bhatt. So, with Punit Malhotra now taking over the baton, will Principal Karan Johar's latest graduating batch pass the test? Read here

Setting the Scene:

Rohan Sachdev (Tiger Shroff) is a rather promising student, with a flair in sports. Although he comes from a poor background, and studies in Mussourie's Pishorilal Chamandas College, one can say that he is capable of much more, yes with the right direction of course.

But, the thing hindering him is his infatuation with his childhood sweetheart, Mia (Tara Sutaria). As predicted, suddenly gifted with a scholarship, Rohan (Tiger Shroff) finds himself amongst the 'affluent' of St Teresa, where his beloved Mridula, now known as Mia (Tara) also studies.

However, things take an ugly turn when the raging star of St. Teresa and twice the champion of 'Student of The Year' trophy, Manav Mehra (Aditya Seal) sees Rohan as competition. Meanwhile, in between all this drama enters Ananya Panday, (Shreya) who is not only stealing all the limelight with her rebel moves but keeps the viewer entertained in this mediocre saga.

Plot

The film's leading man (Tiger Shroff) fits right into the scheme of things when he secures admission to Dehradun's upscale college, St. Teresa but many of his antics start becoming the cause of concern, for the current poster boy Manav (Aditya).

Shroff plays the role of a 'perfect' man in the film, aces every activity that he is involved in. Not exaggerating, but every scene of his is crafted so carefully, one might think that is rather superficial. Amid all this, are the film's leading ladies Tara and Ananya who are always glammed up and sport the best designer clothes.

However, their roles aren't tailored to perfection like Tiger Shroff's, which makes one feel like its closer to reality. While Tara's (Mia) character seems flippant with choices, the film sees Ananya (Shreya) playing the role of a rebel, one that is highly likable. What brings the twist is that she is also playing sister to present poster boy, Aditya Seal (Manav)

Verdict

From scenes to dialogues, the tale is a typical Karan Johar film that is quite predictable. A lot of drama and action remains out of the classroom, with the main focus given to sports, dance and definitely romance!

However, the chemistry between Tiger Shroff and the two debutants never really takes off and even with so many conflicts, the narrative remains light with a focus on overall 'visual appearance'. Meanwhile, the music of the film is quite average, unlike the original film, where chartbusters such as 'Radha', and 'Ishq Wala Love' can still be found on playlists.

Cast: Ananya Panday, Aditya Seal, Gul Panag, Tiger Shroff, and Tara Sutaria.

What works: Ananya Panday and Aditya Seal's heartfelt performances

What doesn't work: Music, over-dramatic scenes. The film also has a dialogue which says, "Talent Ko Angrezi Mein Kya Kehte Hai? (What is 'Talent' called in English). The two-second dialogue is so cringe-worthy, that it will make you want to head right to the door and leave.

Rating: 1.5/5

15 Thoughts I Had While Watching Student Of The Year 2 Starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria

By Pallavi Mukherjee

Published on May 10, 2019

In Bollywood, our minds are trained to let go off some logic when it comes to movies because we as Indians are in love with drama, music, dance and action. Well, Student Of The Year 2 is that Bollywood flick from the house of Dharma which makes the ride an entertaining one…

Not to forget, while watching the movie, there were few thoughts that glided in the head and I might as well pen it down so that you all know what went right and what went wrong in this college drama starring Tiger Shroff, Aditya Seal, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria.

Here Are 15 Thoughts I Had While Watching Student Of The Year 2 Starring Tiger Shroff, Ananya Panday and Tara Sutaria:

1. Tiger Shroff as Rohan is a mini version of his Flying Jatt here with his effortless stunts that look so smooth but gives a pressure on our brains to think like ‘how on earth are you doing this? You are a student, you are literally jumping buildings and climbing walls like a superhero just to see your girlfriend?’

2. Where are the books? I am all hearts for sports and dance but coming back to basics, every school has this basic education system to be followed and like it or not we have to study, pass and then do these competitions for Student of the year and stuff but here the case was totally different #GodBlessSuchSchools #WhereAreSuchSchools

3. Absolutely badass, slay queen and a stunner on screen Ananya Panday is someone I really see myself as. Like her character Shreya is so relatable yet she is someone who can give you the chills for her attitude and fits that she throws around as the rich, spoilt girl, who is lonely deep down, ignored and unloved. By far, she plays this complex character with such ease and finesse that I think, she is a show stealer.

4. Oh My Tara! Tara Sutaria as Mia has her grey shades and then she has her goody girl side of character. We feel for Tara but then we also get a little angry on her. She successfully manages to get our emotions right. Thinking about her character, from where did you buy such pretty clothes? How did you manage to look so on point every time considering that you are just an upper middle class small town girl.

5. Tiger Shroff’s hot body but no bank balance, is a sob story. While having the pop corn, my eyes were drooling in love for the abs but I pity those guys who spend a lot to go and workout in gym, look at Tiger, he literally day dreams and gets those abs (I am not kidding when I say DAY DREAM!)

6. Welcome Manav AKA Aditya Seal who also happens to be Shreya’s (Ananya Panday) brother and a rich spoilt brat who is sort of an all rounder and the great achiever of Student Of The Year trophies from past years. Matlab.. He is a charismatic anti-hero who will win your heart from the first frame itself!

7. While the entire fight was between Manav and Rohan, it was Shreya and Mia who are side kicks in the story, with limited scope to their characters because they are girls and I completely forgot that girls in such schools can only look pretty, dance and be catty to one another.

8. Also, I had to forget that girls cannot really take part in sports and compete. I guess then the school should have been an-all boys school to suit this script that would have meant a lot more than what it is.

9. Love is like a ping pong ball and come on, this is a trend now a days. We can love and unlove, it is absolutely fine. So there was this ball of love that kept rotating from Rohan to Mia to Shreya then Mia to Manav to Rohan to Shreya to… Ok BYE! #BallWalaLove

10. Students are there but there are no teachers, there are no guiding lights, this school is driven by students, they run it on their own shoulders. Poor souls, such pressure at such tender age!

11. A school with no rules, students are free to do whatever they want. Not just the St. Teresa but also Pishorilal (A comparatively government type school) which has two heads who have no idea about anything, they have no rules, they completely feel Rohan (Tiger Shroff) will lead their school’s future, like seriously?

12. St Teresa is numero uno. Well, that’s amazing people but for what? I couldn’t list one thing except Manav and his team of 5 people (who you won’t remember after a second) that’s worthy enough to make that college so prestigious. Oh! may be the infrastructure is another point.

13. The finale challenge of Kabaddi decides the winner of the trophy and well, we can’t tell you guys the climax! (hint: it’s predictable).

14. This school is all about challenges, love and trophy where is the fun? the masti? the school time bunking. I may want to be a part of this school for a minute or so, but there is so essence of reality in this.

15. Sign up for the school with pretty girls wearing pretty clothes who are cheering for the men in their college to compete for a trophy which they can win themselves. St Teresa? Are you guys giving girls the opportunity next time, I might want to sign up too!

Final Verdict: This movie is one time watch for sure for its entertainment value with some songs and dance and good performances by the lead stars but I seriously feel that movies are the leading lights for Indian society and as a film maker when we are making movies for the youth, we can overlook on the logic part but not on the parts that can shape opinions. I strongly feel the movie would have been way better if the girls were given an equal chance and also if there was a slight touch of reality and not a utopia created just like that.

Oh wow... this is from R.Desai, film critic that works in Film Companion with Anupama Chopra:

Strangest thing about #SOTY2: A woman outside the matinee show approaching every moviegoer with: "Hi, I'm from Dharma Productions, would you mind giving the film a positive review?" (Am I out of date or is this normal practice?)

I may sound repetative but all these SOTY stuffs always makes me wonder why doesn't Karan Johar just straight away make a movie out of the tv show remix. It pretty much always look similar to the show anyways. Atleast it would have a better and relevant story. Yes Mia trigger memories. 😆

Just watched SOTY2.

Acting :- Tiger Shroff was miscast,he was preparing for Baagi 3 may be ??. Never saw such Shaolin kabaddi ever ??

Tara was not given prominent role, she looked good but lacks screen presence.

Ananya was surprisingly good, after silently reading this forum,I was confident that she can't act. But for newbie she was better than many others. She had somewhat good role in movie. I may be the odd one out,but I liked ananya in the movie. Looking forward to her future roles.

Aditya seal was ok,he looks good, but neither tiger nor Aditya looks college students.

Story :- first half was dull, second half was slightly better. I liked tiger friends in the movie & tiger-ananya moments. Everything else was garbage.

Music :- Nothing to say.

Rating :- 2/5.

Note to self :- Not to make opinion about any newbie actors by reading this forum. Just because this forum is hell bent on hating napotism, they pass judgement about all star kids without giving them chance.

Make your own opinion.

It’s true. Her character is very selfish and two faced in the movie and not much importance is given to her. As a neutral viewer, I’d find Ananya more good in this movie just because her character was so much better than Tara’s.

so karan gave Ananya a better and a complex role, who isn't loved by her parents, celebrates her birthday alone who audience can sympathize with her and like her. And tara is given faltu double faced girl role who is flipping between boys??👎🏼 so predictable it was.
