Rekha's story is a Greek tragedy that happened in the heart of Bombay

    • sukantdeepak
Author Yasser Usman, who has penned 'Rekha: The Untold Story' reveals what makes him write about stars past their prime.

Stardom, he says, is unexplainable. And the fact that she metamorphosed into an actor from a reclusive little girl forced to be in films, has little to do with her popularity among the masses.

"There have been several superstars in her time - Hema Malini, Sridevi - but Rekha has always managed to have that edge, thanks to her personal life. From a brash woman who spoke about her sexuality and relationship with Amitabh Bachchan 20 years back to a recluse, who now sticks to talking about abstract love and seldom gives interviews, it has been an interesting journey for those who have loved and hated her," says Yasser Usman, whose book Rekha: The Untold Story, published by Juggernaut, has gone to press for the fourth time in a month.

This, he says, is precisely the reason why even in her introvert avatar, the spotlight seldom moves away from the star. The news never leaves her. And yes, why are the best actor and best actress trophies at popular film functions still given by Rekha?

"Well, if Amitabh Bachchan is in the audience, cameramen are always expected to play a ping-pong game," smiles the 37-year-old author, speaking on the sidelines of the Kumaon Literary Festival being held in Uttrakhand.

Usman, who has also written Rajesh Khanna: The Untold Story of India's First Superstar, admits he never imagined that the book on Rekha would be received so well. "Frankly, it was easier to write on Rajesh Khanna. I could relate to the ego of a man."

Stressing that he has never been a Rekha "fan", the writer, who researched for a year before writing the book - visiting the National Film Archives in Pune, going through her old interviews and talking to producers she worked with ("many of them used unprintable words for her") - admits that he admires her growth as an actor.

"I have watched all her films. You know, when I was talking to Gulzar about Rekha, he insisted that over the years she learnt to wear the character she was portraying on the screen as a piece of cloth on her body. That has been her biggest achievement. Why Muzaffar Ali signed her for Umrao Jaan, choosing to let go Smita Patil and Shabana Azmi? He saw a picture of her in a newspaper. Rekha's eyes were sad. They were of a woman who understood the true essence of the word 'tragedy'," he says. Ali told the author that during the shooting of the film, she became Umrao Jaan, the one loved by all, accepted by none.

The book has 26 chapters. There is no interaction with the person he has written about.

"I tried. All the messages left on her answering machine translated into a phone call from her long-time secretary who wanted to ascertain if it was a cheap book. I assured her that it would be an objective account," he explains.

And the criticism by some quarters that there is gossip in those pages?

"Yes, some people are alleging that. But how can that be true? I have sourced everything. And no, nothing has been attributed to sources," he insists.

Usman says he has done his best to unravel the different layers of the woman who was far beyond her time. The 14-year-old girl pushed in front of the camera, abused and who did some very forgettable films. "But importantly, I wanted to bring forth a character that went beyond her association with Amitabh Bachchan. No matter what people say, leave alone the fact that Bachchan never even once admitted to their relationship."

For the author, who may write his next book on a politician, Rekha and her story is a Greek tragedy that happened in the heart of Bombay.

"Despite her star power, despite the love people showered, she was proposed only by the Delhi-based businessman Mukesh Aggarwal. It was morning when he asked her to marry him. She insisted that they must... by the evening. Maybe she was scared that even he would go away. And he committed suicide just a few months after marriage, hanging himself with her dupatta. We know about the witch-hunt. About how she was blamed for his death despite the fact that he was a depression patient."

Rajesh Khanna, now Rekha. What is it about stars past their prime that calls you?

"Maybe the fact that they are very lonely. And maybe, I am very lonely," he says.

BOOK EXCERPT

The exact moment when film star Rekha became a villain in vermilion (and it wasn't in Silsila')

She walked into Rishi Kapoor's wedding with sindoor in her hair, spreading shock waves all around.

In a display of typically sexist hypocrisy, the film industry singled out Rekha and maligned her, not her partners, for her supposed relationships. After reports of affairs with Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt and now Amitabh Bachchan, among others, Rekha was being projected as a woman who posed a threat' to all married men. Derogatory labels like man-eater', nymphomaniac' and sex kitten' were used casually and callously to refer to her.

At the peak of her career, Rekha was at the receiving end of scathing attacks by other leading actresses. The acclaimed actress of her era Nargis Dutt said about Rekha in 1976: She gives the impression to men that she is easily available. Rekha is looked on as a "witch by some. Sometimes I think I understand her. I've worked with a lot of children with a lot of psychological problems in my time. She's lost. She needs a strong man.'

Dimple Kapadia is reported to have told Rekha to steer clear of Rajesh Khanna, saying stay away from my husband'.

The writer Khushwant Singh, however, known for his blunt wit, effortlessly attacked the double standards of the film industry: Rekha is probably the victim of the usual masculine habit of describing any woman who is stylish and uninhibited as a "nymphomaniac. Probably, it's also a kind of wishful thinking of the male. I admire people like Rekha and Protima Bedi. Only I wish they didn't indulge in it deliberately for publicity. Otherwise, the more scandalous Rekha's statements are, the more I like her.'

And scandal she did create with her next move.

22 January 1980. The occasion was Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's wedding. The whole of R.K. Studio was grandly bedecked to celebrate Raj Kapoor's son's wedding. The biggest names of the industry were in attendance, including Amitabh Bachchan, his wife, Jaya, and his parents. Amitabh was talking to Manmohan Desai in a corner and Jaya was sitting with her mother-in-law, Teji Bachchan, when Rekha made a sensational entry. All eyes turned at once towards her. Dressed in a magnificent white sari, Rekha had a bright red bindi on her forehead. But what caught everyone's eye was the generous dabbing of sindoor in her hair. The cameras instantly pivoted away from Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, and frenetically photographed Rekha's curious new look. The dull drone of everyone murmuring and whispering filled the evening air; everyone wanted to know: had Rekha married?

Cine Blitz summed up the mood of the evening in its report: Don't miss the sindoor in her hair, which only married ladies wear. It's not something even people in films wear as a fashion. What is she trying to prove that she's hooked?' According to the report, after congratulating Rishi and Neetu, Rekha went and stood bang in the middle of R.K. Studio's garden. When had she ever shied away from attention, or controversy? But her eyes kept darting towards Amitabh every other second. That evening, Amitabh had injured his hand and was wearing a bandage on it. Gathering courage, Rekha took hold of her close friend Snehlata Pandey, the doctor who is credited for introducing Rekha to aerobics and better diets, and went over to where Amitabh was standing. They were seen chatting formally for a few minutes. According to a report in Stardust, Jaya tried to keep a stoic front for a long time, but eventually she had to bend her head and let the tears roll down.'

In a somewhat anticlimactic interview, Rekha later cleared the air: that evening, she had come to the reception straight from a shoot. The sindoor and mangalsutra she was wearing were part of her get-up for a film, which she had forgotten to remove.

But according to a report published in Movie in June 1982, at a National Awards function, Rekha, who was being honoured with the award for best actress for Umrao Jaan (1981), was asked by then president of India Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, Why do you have sindoor in your maang?' The audience waited with bated breath. Rekha promptly replied into the mike, In the city I come from, it's fashionable to wear sindoor.'

But in an interview much later, Jaya Bachchan, in fact, completely refuted her husband's involvement in any affair: Let the whole world say what they want. He [Amitabh Bachchan] has made a commitment to me and he has to have the courage (to say he's in love with somebody else!), and if he is doing something behind my back, it's his problem. Not my problem. He has to live with it. And with his conscience!'

Without taking Rekha's name, Amitabh responded to the reported tensions in his marriage: A divorce will never happen in our case. I don't believe in divorce because my basic instincts are Indian. I made an absolutely first class choice when I took Jaya as my wife.' This is the closest that Amitabh ever came to even admitting that all was not well in the Bachchan household.

But Rekha kept fuelling the media fire. In an interview to Stardust, she made a strange claim: that Jaya had invited her over to the Bachchan home one day. Jaya did not mind the relationship as long as she thought her husband was only having a fling. It's when she realized that he was really emotionally involved, that is when it began hurting her. She called me for dinner one evening and though we spoke about everything but him, before I left that day, she made sure to tell me, "I will never leave Amit whatever happens.'

Scandalous disclosures were part and parcel of being Rekha. But this anecdote about an encounter between the wife and the mistress was truly sensational; and Jaya never refuted it. Whether this really happened is difficult to ascertain but a similar episode featuring the very same lead players was about to unfold on screen. The stars were about to align to bring Jaya, Amitabh and Rekha together on film, in spite of the promise that Jaya had extracted from Amitabh never to act with Rekha again.

A new silsila was soon going to unfold, bringing to life the hushed-up love triangle.

#ThrowbackThursday: Did Amitabh Bachchan slap Rekha because of an Iranian dancer? Find out

Entertainment
Updated Jul 19, 2018 | 15:28 IST | Shalini Singh

Who doesn't know about Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha's alleged relationship? Even though the rumours have died down, it is still considered one of the biggest controversies of Bollywood. There were many things that happened in their rumoured affair which made headlines but Amitabh allegedly slapping Rekha is the least discussed one. Read on for the details.

If you are an avid Bollywood fan, chances are you have one way or the other heard about the infamous relationship of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha, which the former never accepted and the latter never denied. Rekha, in 1978, gave an interview to Stardust magazine, wherein she revealed that Jaya Bachchan had asked Amitabh Bachchan to stop working with her. When Rekha confronted Big B, he simply said, "I am not going to say a word. Don't ask me about it.

After this incident, Rekha allegedly broke up with him and also gave him back the two rings that Amitabh Bachchan had gifted her and that she used to wear all the time. In the same interview, Rekha said, "I was working in Khoobsuratat that time and I put my heart and soul into my role. You will notice that in the last half of the film I am not wearing my two rings. They have been given to me by him and I never remove them even when I am sleeping. But during those days when we had parted, I sent them back to him." But looks like their relationship didn't end there.

We all know that this controversial and rumoured affair was never easy for the two of them and one such difficult incident was when Amitabh Bachchan allegedly slapped Rekha for an Iranian dancer. According to a video by Lehren's YouTube channel, Lehren Retro, the biography on Rekha, Rekha: The Untold Story reveals an incident of the 1980s when Amitabh Bachchan was already married to Jaya Bachchan, and his alleged affair with Rekha was also at its peak.

At that time, Bachchan senior was shooting for his film, Laawaris, and reportedly fell for an Iranian dancer during the shoot of the movie. In fact, the news started hitting headlines as well and it was then that Rekha had to visit Amitabh on the sets of the film. And when the actress reached there seeking clarification from the actor, they got into a major fight which resulted in Amitabh allegedly slapping Rekha multiple times.

As per the same video, this incident allegedly left Rekha fuming and she declined the film Silsila as well. It is then that Yash Chopra started convincing Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan to do the movie, which they eventually did. Both Laawaris and Silsila released in 1981.

Rekha: The Untold Story by Yasser Usman exposes a dark side of Bollywood

The book tells how Rekha overcame several odds to become one of the greatest actresses of Indian cinema.
Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Indian film legend Rekha with HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum

December 11, 2016

Casual observers of Indian cinema might be unaware of the reasons why Rekha, an actress who dominated Bollywood during the 1970s and 1980s, dropped out of the public eye and became a semi-recluse.

She rarely grants interviews or attends show business events. The chance to see her in public last week, when she attended the opening of the 13th Dubai International Film Festival on Wednesday and collected its Lifetime Achievement Award, was a rare treat for fans.

The actress retreated into her private life in the early 1990s, her privacy guarded jealously. The events that preceded this including a doomed relationship with actor Amitabh Bachchan became the subject of endless discussion in the media.

A recently published book, Rekha: The Untold Story, by journalist Yasser Usman, suggests that the real reason she abandoned Bollywood was that the industry treated her disgracefully, with scandalous misogyny, after the suicide of her husband, Mukesh Agarwal, in 1990.

He had been clinically depressed for some time, and in his suicide note, he wrote: "Don't blame anyone. This did not prevent the media and many in the film industry from attacking Rekha's character and blaming her for his death.

"The Black Widow was one of the more restrained headlines. "No conscientious director will ever work with her again, said director Subhash Ghai. Actor Anupam Kher said: "She's become the national vamp. Professionally and personally, I think it's curtains for her.

After such vilification, it is little surprise Rekha withdrew.

A complicated love life a string of failed romances preceded her marriage to Agarwal turned her into a figure of hate. Usman traces her unhappy childhood that was cut short when she was forced to start work as an actress in 1969, at the age of 14, to support her family and pay her mother's debts.

"I was pulled out of the ninth class and made to work...I used to refuse to go to the sets and occasionally my brother beat me up, Rekha has said.

She was born out of wedlock and her famous father, actor Gemini Ganesan, refused to acknowledge or support her. At school she was taunted for being "ugly, fat and illegitimate.

When she arrived in Bombay as a vulnerable teenager, Bollywood proved no friendlier. She was mocked for being dark-skinned, overweight, not knowing Hindi (her mother tongue is Tamil), and eating South Indian food.

"Bombay was like a jungle and I had walked in unarmed, she has said. "It was one of the most frightening phases of my life.

Usman suggests the innocent teenager was in all likelihood sexually exploited by men in the industry. In any case, her image as a bold and independent woman not complimentary terms in an Indian context were established.

And yet, as Usman relates, Rekha overcame the odds to become one of the greatest actresses of Indian cinema, starring in 200 films and winning acclaim for her roles in Umrao Jaan, Khoobsurat, Kalyug, Utsav and Ijaazat among many others.

While Usman's account of her life is sincere and sympathetic, its biggest deficiency is, unsurprisingly, that she refused to speak to him. He was, therefore, forced to rely on people who knew her, archive interviews and second-hand sources.

"I managed to talk to her secretary once and she said she would get back to me but never did, says Usman. "Now that I know how many vicious things have been written about Rekha, I can understand her apprehension in collaborating on the book.

He sent her a copy of the finished book but has had no response.

"I hope she liked it and realised that it is an honest portrait of her but also a hugely sympathetic portrait, he says.

"She is an eternal fighter and finally emerged a winner, but Bollywood has been cruel to her.

This assessment, and accusations of misogyny, will be an eye-opener for those who see Bollywood as trendy and cool.

"I am not saying that she is a role model, but she was honest about everything and Bollywood tried to tame her, writes Usman.

He believes the treatment of women in the industry has not improved greatly since Rekha's time. Kangana Ranaut, for example, has faced harsh personal attacks for her feud with Hrithik Roshan.

"Look at Kangana Ranaut, or Vidya Balan, who was on top of her game five years ago, says Usman. "I'm not comparing them with Rekha but they've got no big pictures lined up.

"Women who speak their mind and are honest are eventually sidelined. This is still a male-dominated industry.

Idgi, why is Rekha (and sometimes PC) gets portrayed as the victim? She is trashy for ruining other people's marriage. I have no sympathy for any of them. The men are trashier because they are the ones with the commitments, but the other woman is not innocent either. And lol at AB Sr going 'I dont believe in divorce cause I am Indian', but apparently being a cheater and a womanbeater is okay tho :/

Exactly , you must be really messed up to ruin another person's marriage. I mean sure people are gonna make moves at you but why would anyone just give in? I'm watching a web series on extra marital affair now where it's supposed to be "mature , the marriage was already in trouble but the man is in an affair for three years before divorcing his wife and they still try to make this look okay
