Luka Chuppi' review: Kartik Aaryan, Kriti Sanon face trouble in paradise

Strong performances from a sturdy cast doesn't make for a satisfying rom-com

Bollywood rom-com Luka Chuppi' kicks off with a fetching, lovable couple tenuously exploring a swift live-in relationship, snubbing the moral policing in their small-town.

It's about love in the times of strict morality by self-titled cultural protectors.

It's an interesting premise, but as you delve deeper into Rashmi (Sanon) and Guddu's (Aaryan) lives, you realise that it's the film that is averse to commitment and is the creative equivalent of a runaway bride.

Luka Chuppi' a comedy about the complexities in a modern day relationships shies away from fully putting itself out there. The result? A chaotic comedy that doesn't come together as a whole in soulful harmony. There seems to be a mismatch between the performances of a talented spectrum of actors and the way their characters develop.

For instance, Sanon who plays an intern at a local TV channel station in Mathura is introduced as a spunky young woman who insists that she wants to know her boyfriend well before even considering marriage.

In a clinical manner, she convinces her relatively conservative partner a spot on Aaryan about the joys of a live-in arrangement.

She has no qualms about doing it on the sly, minus her parent's approval.

But by the end of the movie, the same woman is reduced to an emotional, teary wreck who develops a strong moral code and who just can't tolerate the idea of deceiving her elders. Suddenly, being married becomes her top priority, making her earlier speech about having a solid career, irrelevant. It just doesn't add up.

If you are willing to let go off that grouse, then there's a lot to enjoy in terms of performances and wry humour in Luka Chuppi' a film that also tackles the issue of boundaries or lack thereof among couples in India where your family is a silent stakeholder in your relationships.

Aaryan and Sanon are cute together and are endearingly earnest. Their chemistry shines in the first half.

But the one who won my heart is their Man Friday friend Aparshakti Khurana, who plays a Muslim in the Hindu-dominated Mathura. His satirical swipe on the existing religious divide makes you laugh and hits the right spots. As always, Pankaj Tripati delivers the comic goods. He plays that token slimy relative who's snarky and conniving. Actor Vinay Pathak, as this hard-core right-wing politician and the doting dad of Rashmi, does a fine balancing act of being comically manipulative.

Stories set in the small towns of India are gaining momentum in Bollywood and Luka Chuppi' intends to milk its popularity. While the first half chugs along without skipping a beat, the second half meanders before it tediously reaches a conclusion.

Be warned, Luka Chuppi' isn't a life-altering romantic comedy which sets out to make some grave social comment. It's a light-hearted film with a scattered, almost fickle, storyline bolstered by good performances from a sturdy cast. While you may not put a ring on this one, you can definitely live with it for a couple of hours of your life.

The 2005 film SALAAM NAMASTE is credited for making the idea of live-in popular in India. It's been nearly 14 years since the film released and although live-in is a known concept by now and we have also had a few more films on this topic, it's still considered a taboo in many places, including in some progressive urban areas of the country. Hence, to show a couple living-in in a small Uttar Pradesh town secretly can make for a fun and entertaining watch. Cinematographer-turned-director Laxman Utekar's debut Hindi film LUKA CHUPPI explores this aspect. Moreover, it stars Kartik Aaryan and this is the actor's first film after the much loved and successful flick SONU KE TITU KI SWEETY. So does LUKA CHUPPI manage to provide entertainment in abundance? Or does it fail in its endeavour? Let's analyse.
LUKA CHUPPI is the story of a couple living-in with their family. Superstar Nazim Khan (Abhinav Shukla) gets into a controversy when it comes to light that he is living-in with his girlfriend and is unapologetic about it. The moral police come out in full force to protest against his 'indecent' act. One such organisation is Rashtriya Sanskriti Manch and in Mathura, it is led by Vishnu Trivedi (Vinay Pathak). His daughter is Rashmi (Kriti Sanon) and she joins a local news channel after completing her media studies in Delhi. Here she bumps into Guddu (Kartik Aaryan) and both fall in love. After a fight with his elder unmarried brother Vikas (Himanshu Kohli) and brother in law Babulal (Pankaj Tripathi), he decides to tie the knot ASAP. He proposes to Rashmi. She however refuses to marry him so soon and insists on a live-in relationship. Guddu obviously freaks out. However inspired by an idea given by their colleague Abbas (Aparshakti Khurana), they decide to live in when they go on a 20-day assignment at Gwalior, where no one knows them. Hence they could live in without any fear. But in order to get the flat on rent, they pretend to be a married couple. Rashmi also has to go out wearing mangalsutra and apply sindoor. All is going well when Babulal catches them getting cosy in a public place. Assuming they are married, he tells his family about it and they all land up at their pad in Gwalior. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Rohan Shankar's story is novel and entertaining and different from other such films in this genre. The characters are very well fleshed out and most importantly, they are relatable. Rohan Shankar's screenplay is effective for most parts and evokes the right humour. At some places however, it is a bit weak, especially in the first half. In the attempt to establish the setting and the dynamics between the characters, the writer seems to have done a bit of a rushed job. On the positive side, a few scenes are exceptional and would surely be loved. Rohan Shankar's dialogues are funny. Thankfully, there are no dialogues with double entendre.
Laxman Utekar's direction is good but could have been better. The script gets a bit off in the first half and his direction does not do much to polish the minuses. But he gets better as the film progresses. One of the best parts of the film is how it addresses a taboo topic and yet makes it mainstream. In the past, we have had films based on live-in like say OK JAANU [2017] but it was a niche product as majority of the country just couldn't relate to it. Laxman however executes the plot well and the message comes out loud and clear. As a result, this film has a wider appeal and thanks to humour and treatment.
LUKA CHUPPI begins on a surprising note, showing the Nazim Khan controversy. It makes it clear that besides being a comedy, it's also going to make a social comment. Audiences however will go by the trailer and they expect to see romance and some dash of situational fun. And they definitely get that once the characters get introduced. At the same time however the film takes a while to get into its element. The falling-in-love happens quite quickly. The way the equation between Guddu with Vikas and Babulal is established seems forced. In fact the dream sequence where Guddu imagines that his nephew Chiku is getting married falls flat. It's in the scene where the Gwalior neighbours create a havoc is when the film picks up. This particular scene is quite hilarious and even heroic and will be greeted with claps. The intermission point, when Guddu-Rashmi's luka chuppi' gets exposed (though not entirely) is also quite entertaining. Post-interval, the film gets even better as Guddu and Rashmi pretend to be married when they are not. The sequence at the temple is quite impressive, especially when it brings a new angle into the film. Guddu-Rashmi attempting to get married in their house is touching and yes, guffaw-inducing. The best however is reserved for the finale. Usually, comic capers tend to go all over the place. Fortunately in the case of LUKA CHUPPI, it doesn't happen and it ends on a good note.

Kartik Aaryan once again is in a great form. His boyish looks work instantly but it's his performance that makes it even more endearing. In one scene in the bedroom with Kriti and Aparshakti, he does go into the monologue' zone but quickly composes himself. His silent, deadpan expressions, especially in scenes when his family members are calling him names, are quite hilarious. Kriti Sanon has a fantastic screen presence and maintains a strong position. She also surprisingly shines in an important emotional sequence in the second half. Aparshakti Khurana as always is dependable. The prejudice that others have towards his character's religious identity is quite hard hitting. Pankaj Tripathi's humour seems forced initially but later, it's him who raises the maximum laughs. Vinay Pathak is a revelation. Till now, he has been associated with funny and light roles. But in this film, he plays a role of a dreaded politician and he looks very convincing. Himanshu Kohli is the surprise of the film and his character helps a lot in adding to the humour quotient in the film, especially post-interval. Vishwanath Chatterjee (Guddu's brother Varun) and Neha Saraf (Guddu's bhabhi Janki) also get a chance to make their presence felt. Chiku (Master Samarth) is adorable. Sapna Sand (Mrs Srivastava) is good as the nosy neighbour in Gwalior. Ajit Singh (Srikanth) is irritating as Vishnu Trivedi's sidekick but that was the idea as his character has a villainous tinge. Atul Srivastava (Guddu's father Badriprasad) and Alka Amin (Guddu's mother Shakuntala) are decent. Abhinav Shukla is okay and ideally, the makers should have cast a superstar in his place.
There are only recreated songs in the film which is a first. 'Poster Lagwa Do', the biggest song of the film, is shockingly missing from the film and is played during the end credits. This might disappoint its fans. 'Coca Cola' is also played during the end credits and its foot tapping. 'Photo' and 'Duniyaa' are fine while 'Tu Laung Main Elaachi' is melodious. Ketan Sodha's background score has a funny touch that instantly make the proceedings light-hearted.
Milind Jog's cinematographer is average. Manini Mishra's production design is satisfactory. Sukriti Grover, Mallika Chauhan and Jia Bhagia's costumes are appealing, especially the ones worn by Kriti Sanon. Manish Pradhan's editing is appropriate. The film is just 126 minutes and moves swiftly.
On the whole, LUKA CHUPPI is a funny take on the modern relationships laced with dollops of situational and funny moments. This clean comedy would get thumbs up not just from the youngsters but also from the family audiences. Recommended!

The gen-next star of Bollywood Kartik Aaryan who enjoyed phenomenal success with Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety is coming to your nearest hall tomorrow to woo you again with Kriti Sanon in his upcoming film Luka Chuppi. The story of this desi rom-com travels from Mathura to Gwalior and Agra. Now the trailer did promise an entertaining ride, hinting at a story that revolves around the concept of live-in relationship with a dash of 'sah parivar.' Kartik is playing the character of Guddu, a star reporter from a local TV channel. On the other hand, Kriti plays a Mathura girl Rashmi who had gone to Delhi to study journalism and now is back in her hometown who interns at the same local cable station. Needless to say, they fall in love. And while Guddu wants to get married, Rashmi wants to see what's the hype about the modern age set up of living in. Phir kya? They delve in and how!

The first half is all about their blossoming love story and cute antics. Their chemistry does come out through dialoguebaazi and it leaves one in cackles. Especially their tirade from being just lovers to fake Mr and Mrs. Their dialect also binds their small-town romance to the essence of the narrative and its endearing. Even more so when they dodge their nosy neighbours and enquiring guardians of morality/society. Special hoots are received for Pankaj Tripathi who shines in his character of a flamboyant Babulal. In fact, he hits the nail in the coffin and brings us to the highly-anticipated interval.

The much-awaited romantic comedy, directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films, which stars Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon in the lead, will finally hit theatres tomorrow. Ever since the trailer dropped on the web, fans have been buzzing about the scintillating on-screen chemistry between Kartik and Kriti. The songs too, especially the remake of 90's song Poster Lagwa Do, has become a fan favourite.

While the film is still hours away from hitting theatres, our in house film critic Shibaji Roychoudhury had the opportunity of attending the press screening held for film. The screening of Luka Chuppi is going on and our critic just finished watching the first half of the film. So, if you are wondering what his opinion is about the first half of the film, check out his comments below:

As soon as the film starts, the director makes one thing clear - the film will explore two aspects of present India: One, it will show the right wing groups tormenting 'young lovers' and second, it also about the kind of youth averse to.commitment. The humour element in the film lands on point every now and then. And the best part, the humour is more situational than slapstick that we are used to watching in Kartik Aaryan films.

So far it seems that the film is all about the complexities of a modern relationship and exquisitely peppered with right wing, conservative society situational humour. Kartik Aaryan aces his small town boy role and Kriti brings back the same charm that we saw her portray in a Bareilly Ki Barfi. Vinay Pathak is a delight and Pankaj Tripathi is seen in a never seen before avatar. Here's hoping that the second half too is as entertaining.

Luka Chuppi explores the story of a young couple who wanted to try being in a live-in relationship' before getting married. However, living in a conservative society, such concepts are frowned upon. As a result, the couple (Kriti and Kartik) decided that they would lie to the world about being married to each other and give live-in relationship', a shot.

But as fate would have it, they eventually end-up at Vinod "Guddu" Shukla's (Kartik Aaryan's character) family home. In the trailer, we see Rashmi Trivedi (Kriti Sanon) cribbing and crying about the fact that they had set out to explore the world of live-in relationship but ended up in the living in a joint family scenario, which is exactly what she wanted to avoid.

There is always a level of scepticism involved while reviewing offbeat romantic comedies. It's become a bit of genre in Bollywood these days with Bareilly Ki Barfi, Stree, Badhai Ho and Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety dominating the box office. More and more people want to tell sweet, relatable stories that strike a chord with the average people rather than go with a high-fidelity story (Thugs of Hindostan, Zero) that fails to make a mark.

Luka Chuppi tells the story of an average young man named Guddu Shukla (Kartik Aaryan) and Rashmi Trivedi (Kriti Sanon) that will definitely make you wanting more of this genre. It's a well-made romantic comedy that makes subtle social commentary without sermonizing (cough Sui Dhaaga cough). Guddi and Rashmi's romance is lovable and hilarious without turning slapstick or overdone.

It's the small town of Mathura where Guddu is a cable tv news reporter and Rashmi is the daughter of a Culture Protection Group's head, Trivedi Ji (Vinay Pathak). Guddu and Rashmi soon fall in love but the small town won't let them hang out like two consenting adults. Society here has already raised a hue and cry against the idea of a man or woman living together. So what do they do? They hide it from everyone, hence the name Luka Chuppi.

Director Laxman Utekar's vision is crystal: he wants to tell a story about two people in love and demands why that's such a bad thing. All they want to do is to live together before they actually get married. Rashmi's character is forward-thinking and she immediately suggests this live-in' arrangement much to the surprise of Guddu. However, the only pitfall is how writer Rohan Shankar sees Rashmi's character. Perhaps it is a common pitfall for most male writers when they begin or continue creating female protagonists. In Luka Chuppi, while we see that Rashmi has a progressive mindset, she wants to work after she gets married - once she is in a situation where she's living with Guddu's family, she merely nods at the idea of working. Her character's stagnant development in the second half of the film is perhaps one of my very few issues with the narrative of the film. Another element that doesn't make much sense is how the main problem of both the protagonists is merely to offer the ritual. For two individuals who are empowered and irreverent enough to dare to live life on their own terms, this is a bit of an inconsistency.

But these are small issues and I'm willing to look past them. Kartik Aaryan has a childlike charm to him that makes him impossible to dislike, ignore or forget. There's kindness in his eyes, an honesty in his laugh and a simplicity in his demeanour that makes him likeable and extremely engaging. Kriti Sanon executes this role effortlessly. She's naturally stylish, easy-going in her manner and appears thoroughly urban without trying, which makes her a perfect fit for a smart, modern young woman struggling with orthodox norms. The supporting cast is stellar. Pankaj Tripathi is hilarious and expertly provides comic relief as Babu Lal, Guddu's sleazeball brother-in-law. Aparshakti Khurana as Abbas, Guddu's best friend, with his deadpan humor and on- point dialogue delivery is one of the highlights of the film. While some of the songs may be a little blas and the lyrics are slightly mind-boggling (Coca Cola tu? Seriously?) the film is a smooth two hours and six minutes long and doesn't dull your brain cells or insult your intelligence.

Luka Chuppi is an enjoyable watch that is directed at a young audience who will find it very relatable. It also subtly touches upon various relevant and timely social issues. Go for it and have a good time at the movies!
