If I remember correctly, it was in one of Masand's article that SRK wanted SLB to change the title if he wanted him to play Khilji.

SLB refused though.

Mastani and Padmavati weren't bad performances to the point they were cringeworthy or anything. They just weren't half as good as people make them out to be. She had close to no scope what so ever. She was primarily there to be a petty ornament. Her performances as Mastani was still pretty mechanical. It's not a secret that Deepika is no great natural talent. She worked hard to become a decent actress and is still just that at best.

no it was never called khilji, slb directed the opera and it was called padmavati, so the name was always padmavati for the film aswell

May be it is first named Khilji on DP's demand it became Padmavati and then SRK wanted it back to khilji which SLB refused. Then Ranveer who was supposed to play Ratan asked that he wanted to do Khilji.

It doesn't really matter who is first choice and second choice. What matters is that Ranveer Singh got to play the role in the final cast.

Even Rani Mukherjee was not first choice to play the role Tina in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. But she was finally cast to be Tina. Then that turned out to be a good boost for her career.

Nobody trusted in Karan at that time since he was a newcomer in the industry so many experienced actress rejected the role. They were afraid to be sidelined in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for the role of Tina.

Now the first choice is remembered as the actress who refused Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Rani Mukherjee got a boost in her career. Nobody cares who was first choice and second choice and so on and so forth. They did not care that Rani was chosen after 7 actress refused to take the role.

No u can check here itself after BM there were lots of article abt his next film AK... Then there were articles he changing it for deepu n then DP herself said in an iv that she told him she will do the mov only if it's name P...

At first reading the article .. I went "only Ranveer ... can't see anyone else playing Khilji" .. but then recalled "Asoka" .. When I googled some of SRK's pics from Asoka, I change my mind! .. He would been a great Khilji as well!
