"I come from Surajpur, a valley in Himachal Pradesh near Manali that is named after my great grandfather Sarju Singh Ranaut. He was a minister for 15 years...I come from a big family not in terms of money, but reputation and grew up in a protective mountain environment...My father slapped me for the first time at 15 and I told him, If you slap me I will slap you back'. I felt raising your hand on anybody is inappropriate and always had a high regard for myself. My dad asked me to leave the house and I did so without a single penny in my pocket.
"When I started out, I was treated like a dog. People in the industry treated me like I didn't deserve to be spoken to and I was some unwanted object. I couldn't speak English fluently and people made fun of me for that. So dealing with rejection became a part of life. I may have had hits, but till date I've never worked with a Shah Rukh Khan or an Akshay Kumar, or Aamir or Salman. I have made my career out of leftovers and rejects of other actresses. All that has taken a toll, I guess. I find it hard to deal with praise. Today, when people say that I have made it and made it on my own, I feel like locking up myself somewhere... It scares me.
"When this man who used to be my father's age, hit me so hard that my head was...I fell on my head on the floor and it started to bleed. I must have been 17 or something. I picked up my sandal and I hit his head hard and it started to bleed as well. That day I thought I am actually a born fighter, it made me a total badass.
"We need to encourage our women for being who they are as opposed to trying to box them and fit them this one is attractive, this one is behenji types, this one is intellectual and this one is a baddie a badass who has boyfriends and wears clothes like this.
