posting it here, for people who cannot visit the other thread :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denying reports about the outfit opposing the period drama, its national spokesperson and ex-major Dr Himanshu said Shri Rajput Karni Sena's name is being used for vested interests.
"We are not opposing 'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi' till we don't have anything substantial from the family, region or the community," Himanshu told IANS over the phone.

"These people, I believe, are using the name of Karni Sena for their own vested interests and they are bringing disrepute to Karni Sena and to the historical characters," he added.

"Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi" captures the life story of Rani Laxmibai and her fight against the British. Kangana plays the lead role in the film, produced by Zee Studios in association with Kamal Jain and Nishant Pitti, and releasing on January 25.

According to reports, the Maharashtra wing of the Karni Sena protested against the film on Thursday alleging that the period drama "alludes to Rani Laxmibai's relationship with a British officer". The reports also said Karni Sena is opposed to the film showing the queen dancing to a special number, saying it is against tradition. They asked the makers of the film to show them the movie before its release.

Himanshu says "we disown and completely dissociate ourselves" from all such claims.

"Supposedly, the family has a problem. They can come to us and if they seek support from us and have a valid reason (we will take it in consideration)... I was in Jhansi recently and nobody said anything of this nature," Himanshu said.
He continued: "Our approach is very clear, if the family, community or the region approaches us or the historians have some reservations...
Supposedly, they approach us and we are convinced with the logic of that, we will take a stand. But we will cross the bridge when the river comes."

Himanshu says "this is the official stand of Karni Sena".

"First and foremost, we should be clear which Karni Sena (has protested). Anybody who pops up and says 'I am Karni Sena', cannot be Karni Sena."

He says the objection should either come from "the family or the historians as in the case of 'Padmaavat'".

Recalling the whole stir around "Padmaavat", based on 16th century poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi's poem "Padmavat", Himanshu said: "The family had reservations and they were not consulted... We had reached out to the government, the states and the censor board as well. We went to almost every Chief Minister and 11 CMs gave it to us in writing that they had reservations about the movie.

"Either the protests should be proper, or it should have some substance. Protests just for the sake and somebody running the shop in the name of the Karni Sena is objectionable from our side and it should be discouraged from the media side also."

Brahmin outfit threatens stir against ManikarnikaKangana Ranaut's upcoming period drama Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is based on the life of the 19th century queen of Jhansi.

The controversy surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat has barely settled, and a Brahmin outfit in Rajasthan has threatened to disrupt shooting of Kangana Ranaut-starrer Manikarnika, claiming it has an "indecent portrayal of Rani Laxmibai, a Brahmin.

"The movie's shooting has been going on in Rajasthan for some time and we have come to know that there are some scenes, including a song, that show her as having a love affair with an Englishman, said Suresh Misra, founder president of Sarv Brahmin Mahasabha (SBM).

"We have learnt that some portions for the movie have been picked up from Rani, a book by (London-based author) Jaishree Misra. Following objections, the book was banned by Uttar Pradesh government then. So our concern is, why are filmmakers proceeding with a movie with content from a banned book, said Misra, 46, who is also a secretary with the state Congress unit. He said if their concerns are not addressed, "Brahmin Mahasabha will not let the movie be shot here and will disrupt its shooting.

The book, a historical fiction, had mentioned a romantic relationship between Rani Lakshmibai and British officer Robert Ellis. It was banned in Uttar Pradesh in February 2008 by the then Mayawati-led government.

"We had sent a letter to the producers on January 9. However, after almost a month, there has been no response, Misra said.

"Jhansi ki Maharani Laxmi Bai was a Brahmin and therefore our organisation and community has certain queries as it is related with Brahmin sentiments & emotions, reads the purported letter to Manikarnika producer Kamal Jain.

The letter inquires about "background and profile of writers and profile of historians they may have consulted, details of song(s) in the movie and the context in which they are being filmed.

The SMB Monday announced that since they have not received a reply, they are escalating their protest.

They plan to meet Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria Tuesday and ask the state government "to take an affidavit from the director and producers of the movie that there is nothing objectionable in it, and that the story is shared with the state government. "Else, it may meet the same fate as Padmaavat, Misra said.

In November last year, SBM supported the campaign by Rajput outfits against Padmaavat. Now, the Rajput outfits have decided to back the Brahmin organisation.

Shri Rajput Karni Sena's national president Mahipal Makrana said, "If he (Misra) has objected to the movie, we stand with him. Rani Laxmibai was their pride and is our pride too.

While producer Kamal Jain did not comment on the issue, a person closely associated with the movie said they are not consulting Jaishree Misra's book and that there is "nothing objectionable in the movie. "No letter was received and if anybody comes to us, we will act accordingly. We are going ahead with the actual history on Rani. Good thing about Rani Laxmibai is that everything about her is fact.

Karni Sena protests against Kangana's Manikarnika, threatens to damage property if terms not met

Hindu outfit Karni Sena is protesting against Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. They claim that it has distorted history and will not let the film release unless their terms are met.

Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi has been creating headlines ever since it was announced. The film has landed once again in troubled waters.

On Thursday, the Hindu outfit Karni Sena, protested against the release of the film. They are upset as they believe that the film shows a relationship between Laxmibai and a British officer. They also claimed that the film shows the queen dancing to a special number, which is against their tradition. Karni Sena had created similar hurdles for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat last year, as a result Padmaavat was banned in several states at the time of its release.

Sukhdev Singh Shekhavat, National Head of the Karni Sena told a website, "Time and again, we have seen that filmmakers try to take liberties by showing certain scenes [with the purpose of] adding titillation. We won't tolerate such nonsense."
The film is on the verge of release and has been in the making for a long time.

Asked why the Karni Sena took so long to raise an objection, Sukhdev said, "We had raised concerns in February last year. Despite the Supreme Court judgment, we didn't allow Padmaavat to release in many states. Manikarnika will face the same consequence. We have requested the producers to show us the film before its release. If they release it [without showing it to us], we will damage property [theatres, here] and won't be liable for it."

CBFC( Central Board of Film Certification) has already given a clearance to the film. Speaking about this, Sukhdev said it doesn't matter if they have cleared the film or not. The production house spokesperson rubbished the reports of any affair in the film and said, "There is no affair shown in the film. Once the film releases on January 25, it will be clear. Manikarnika portrays Rani Laxmibai's strength and bravery as she fought for her motherland. We are proud to present this film, and are confident that it will resonate across age groups."

Manikarnika revolves around Rani Laxmibai's fight against the British during the 1857 rebellion.
