Meet Jai from the new Sholay

Prashant Raj Sachdev has a tough job. He will make his movie debut with Ram Gopal Varma's remake of the Bollywood classic, Sholay. And Raj will play the role immortalised by Amitabh Bachchan -- Jai. But Raj -- who replaced Varma's earlier blue-eyed boy Mohit Ahlawat in the race to play Jai -- is not too perturbed. "Sholay is just an amazing twist in the amazing race of my life," quips the 6-foot-3 inch model-turned-actor. I first met Raj two years ago, when he won the first runner-up in the Grasim Mr India 2004 contest. He had spoken about learning golf from his father since class IX, about his love for adventure and sports. So when I saw him on the Amazing Race Asia recently, it wasn't a surprise.

Soon after came the announcement of his foray into Bollywood.

Raj will be acting with Ajay Devgan, who is essaying Dharmendra's Veeru, and Mohan Lal, who has four National Awards under his belt. "Amidst these great actors I am completely raw," confesses Raj. "They know it, and they have been very supportive. I know there is a dagger dangling on my head by playing that role. When Ramuji says so many good things about you, it's scary because suddenly the pressure is on," he adds. What was shooting like, you naturally want to know. After all, this is the Bollywood classic we are talking about.

"It was unnerving," Raj admits. "My entire perception of what acting was all about was completely trashed. The effort that goes into making a film, the technical aspect, the angles -- it's a completely new world for me. There was a shot where I am supposed to be resting by the bar with Ajay Devgan. But there is no Ajay. I am talking to a plant or a leaf. That's what acting is all about. When you watch a movie you can't imagine the way it was shot."
