2.0 (Hindi) has taken a good start with morning occupancy of 35-40%. It is being driven by single screens and mid level multiplexes. The high end multiplexes are not collecting as they should be in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkatta. Hyderabad and Bangalore are hardly screening the Hindi version.

If we take it as a dubbed film the South then these numbers are very good as these films hardly have a market outside the Bahubali films. But 2.0 is not the regular dubbed film where the Hindi markets do not matter as this film needs the Hindi markets to do good business due to the film going over budget.

2.0 is only the fourth South dubbed film to open well in Hindi markets after Humse Hai Muqabla (1995), Hindustani (1996) and Bahubali - The Conclusion (2017). Thelast named is one of biggest openers ever be it dubbed or outright films. The director of 2.0 had also directed Humse Hai Muqabla and Hindustani so has 3 of the 4 biggest south dubbed openers in Hindi markets.

The bigger multiplexes could have been better but its still a solid start and if 2.0 can hold collections at these levels over the the extended weekend it is going to come out with a strong weekend.

2.0 (Hindi) released on over 4000 screens in its Hindi format and has taken the 8th best opening of the year in terms of occupancy but this has to be taken with a pinch of salt as the holiday factor makes a huge difference. 2.0 (Hindi) is a non holiday opening and that too on a Thursday.

Even in Tamil Nadu its not a holiday so a Thursday releases date is no point but the makers in Chennai go by other things like numerology and its a Rajnikant film so be it Thursday or Friday or Monday it does not matter much in that part of the country.

The holiday factor makes a huge differenceas far as Hindi markets as it even pushes up a film like Badaai Ho which would neverget a first day audience without a holiday. Thugs Of Hindostan remains number one due to the bumper start it took on the hugeDiwali holiday and will remain top unless Zero or Simbaa are at another level.

The top openings of 2018 are as follows:

1. Thugs Of Hindostan - 65% (4700 screens)(NATIONAL HOLIDAY)

2. Baaghi 2 - 57.5% (3500 screens)(HOLIDAY)

3. Sanju - 55% (4200 screens)

4. Gold - 52.5% (3050 screens)(NATIONALHOLIDAY)

5. Race 3 - 50% (4300 screens)

6. Satyameva Jayate - 45% (2550 screens)(NATIONAL HOLIDAY)

7. Padmaavat - 42.5% (3750 screens 8. 2.0 - 40% (4150 screens)

9. Veere Di Wedding - 35% (2200 screens

) 10. Badhaai Ho - 30% (2000 screens)(HOLIDAY). Raazi - 30% (1800 screens)

12. Stree - 27.5% (1950 screens).

Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - 27.5% (1650 screens)

2.0 MOVIE REVIEW

Rachit Gupta, TNN, Updated: Nov 29, 2018, 05.41 PM ISTCritic's Rating: 3.0
Sci-fi on steroids, but lacks solid stuff

2.0 Story:
Dr Vaseegaran (Rajinikanth) and his android assistant Nila (Amy Jackson) are called in for help after mobiles start mysteriously flying out of the hands of people in Chennai. Vaseegaran summons his trusted robot Chitti (Rajinikanth) to ward off the bird-shaped supernatural powers of Pakshirajan (Akshay Kumar).

2.0 Review: South films and filmmakers seem to have a handle on out-of-the-box ideas for cinema. Director Shankar has dabbled with such high-concept movies like Robot (2010, Tamil title Enthiran) and I (2015) before, too. While he's no stranger to depicting far-fetched and creative ideas, the unique story of 2.0 does feel a bit underwhelming, especially in the wake of the spectacle created by the CGI-driven execution. The slick visual presentation though, more than makes up for what the story lacks.

The twists and surprises of 2.0 are predictable and the fact that the story follows the template set by the first film, doesn't really add to the experience. But Shankar's vision and his team's technical wizardry with the visual effects creates a positive impact. Akshay Kumar's shape-shifting antagonist Pakshi, made up of millions of cellphones is impressive to say the least. There are several moments in the movie that are quite memorable too. The sight of mobiles covering up an entire road, a forest and forming the giant eagle, are most certainly wow' worthy. But the scientific explanations provided for telekinetic control of mobile phones and the antagonist's supernatural abilities aren't all that convincing. Nevertheless, this is a Rajinikanth movie and questioning cinematic liberty and logic-defying creativity is unwarranted.

Rajinikanth's performance and presence dominates the narrative. Shankar's screenplay gives fans of the superstar plenty of moments to cheer for, especially with the fact that there are not one or two, but three iterations of his robotic character Chitti. Not just that, even the one-liners in the movie and the reference to Rajini's numero uno status gives the fans plenty to cheer for. Akshay Kumar also gives a solid performance as the antagonist, especially in the flashback that reveals his character's ornithology background. The presence of these two superstars is one of the main reasons why 2.0 feels like a grand, big-ticket movie.

The makeup and costumes are highlights of the movie, too. The effort to create Akshay's character is really detailed you don't need to be a VFX guru to realise that the characters of 2.0 really look authentic. The background score by AR Rahman and Qutub-E-Kripa also adds to feel of this futuristic film. While the movie certainly looks world-class, the writing doesn't always live up to the expectations. It's Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar's star power that really saves the day for this magnum opus.

The Indian Express

2.0 movie review and rating: 2.0 is dull as ditchwater in the first half, perking up a little in the second, with a half-way watchable Akshay Kumar, and a Rajinikanth coming into his own right towards the end, for a bit.

  • 2.0

2.0 movie cast: Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Adil Hussain, Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey
2.0 movie director: Shankar
2.0 movie rating: 2 stars

Rajinikanth's previous outing as a mad scientist who creates a robot in his own image was, despite its sludgy parts, quite a lot of fun.

In the 2010 Robot, Rajini played Prof Vaseegaran (and Chitti The Lookalike Robot) with a hint of knowingness peppering his goodness, flirting with the doe-eyed Aishwarya Rai when not tinkering with his machines. There were some laughs to be had as the basic-as-sliced-white-bread storyline unspooled, with the help of Shankar's give-em-big special effects.

Two Point Oh, eight years on, is a reboot of the good robots and bad humans theme, with the add-on of a hot button issue: the environment. And Rajini's reprising his double role as man and robot is buttressed by Akshay Kumar.

2.0 is pitted as a clash of two big stars, even if the opening credits are revelatory: Rajinikanth is superstar' and Akshay merely gets top billing amongst the rest. It also takes the business of throwing everything in Shankar's arsenal of special effects at us, leaving us with two supersize characters towering over a stadium.

So is 2.0 double the fun? Naah. All the groaning and clanking of metal, and 3D computer graphic imagery flying about is just not enough to make it compelling viewing. The writing is even more ordinary than in the first version: the best comic book stories have layers you can dig in to, and the zingiest superhero tales leave us with something to chew on.

Here you have to be content with a couple of wisecracks, one or two gee-whiz sfx scenes, and the desire to whack the evil person sitting next to you who can't keep their paws off their cell-phone. Wait, there's a plot point attached to this, and about the only good thing in this flick.

Shankar did have the kernel of a good idea. Cell phone usage has reached epidemic proportions. It is not only re-wiring our brains and the way we communicate, but creating environmental damage by cell tower radiation. Except by the time this crucial element kicks in, half the film is over.

You sit through the deathly familiar nexus of greedy corporates and politicians bartering bribes and bandwidth, wondering why Rajini is being strangely subdued, even when he is made to spend time with the resolutely red-lipped, impressively pneumatic Ms Jackson. Adil Hussain pops up as a responsible neta' but doesn't get much to do in this to-do of the two titans.

The real film kicks in post-interval, with the appearance of Akshay's Pakshiraja, a good man turned bad, out of fear and justifiable anger. The Bird Man will do anything to save his feathery friends, even if it means killing and smashing his way through buildings and cell towers and people who like their hand-sets. Akshay brings some much-required energy to the movie, as well as some moving moments, before he and his glittery gold eyes get encased in metal. By then it's just a question of how much Shankar will crank it up in the climax. He does, but somehow, none of it sticks after an initial shock-and-awe flash.

2.0 is dull as ditchwater in the first half, perking up a little in the second, with a half-way watchable Akshay, and a Rajini coming into his own right towards the end, for a bit. There are some oh-wow moments, but on the whole, the film is not worth all the sound and fury.

Will there be a 3.0? Give that a thought while I deposit my 3D glasses by the door

Extremely mixed word of mouth.
Reviews are calling it dull and without a soul or story, while appreciating the effort and special effects.

I personally enjoyed the film. It's quite entertaining esp when you watch it in 3D. Given how lacklustre the trailer was, I had zero expectations but its not bad at all. Shankar has made better films in the past but this is worth a watch just for the big screen experience. I don't think the film will be this entertaining in Hindi though cos there were a lot of references in the film which can be enjoyed only if you have watched Tamil films and understand the context. I almost dreaded seeing Rajini with Amy in the film but she is pretty cute and has a decent enough role. Akshay was decent too except the VFX done to his face looked hilarious and pathetic on the big screen 😆 On a final note, I know many troll Rajini. Wonder how someone like him can generate so much craze etc. But having seen a lot of his films, some sequences in 2.0 just reaffirmed the fact that no one does masala like Rajini. I find the reviews pretty surprising cos it's neither a masterpiece like some critics suggest nor is it as pathetic as it made out to be by some others. It's good enough to be watched once on the big screen esp if you are someone who has enjoyed Rajini's mannerisms and antics on screen over the years.
