The low IMDB ratings and negative reviews online have nothing to do with how good or bad the film is. It was a planned move on social media by bigots who could not accept a narrative where a community that they dislike is shown in a good light. Add to that, the 'anti-national' Taapsee who these bigots hate on social media.
Mulk remains to be one of my personal favorites and one of the best films to have come out this year. I wasn't that interested in the film after watching the trailer but I'm glad that I caught the film before it went out of theatres. A very well balanced script and screenplay that shows things as it is in real life. Not even for a second does it preach or single out a particular religion and shame it to show another religion in good light.
I'm glad that in today's day and age, with hatred all around us, such a film came out of Bollywood which is essentially against bigotry and preconceived notions. Taapsee owns the second half of the film during the court scenes. She never goes over the top and gives a very honest and real performance, especially some of those monologues which she delivers effortlessly. I also loved Kumud Mishra as the judge. That is how a judge should be portrayed in films. Not like a mute spectator but someone who can give judgements. My favorite character from the film remains to be that old Hindu friend of Rishi Kapoor, who was always with him from the beginning to the end of the case without judging his friend and blaming him for something he is not at fault for.
My favorite part of the film is the ending bit where the judge gives the judgment. I think that whole monologue by Kumud Mishra should be made a compulsory whatsapp forward instead of silly good mornings and stuff. The end needs to be seen by people everywhere. The theatre was full of whistles and claps at the end of his monologue.
Taapsee is easily a strong contender for best actress awards next year. It's anyways very rare to see female lawyers on screen and when an actor plays one without any antics or gimmicks, it really makes you content with the performance.
