No matter how much back story, crying and bitching is done by people.

Sorry to jump in the middle of conversation.

Back in 1994, performance-oriented films and mainstream films were 2 different territories. Comparing Madhuri with Seema Biwas was not even on the horizon.
AND HAHK was an all-time blockbuster. A film that was watched and loved by classes and masses alike.

Also, Alia's fan-following is nowhere close to Madhuri's in the 90s (at least not yet). Despite so many flops, she was a rage among the audience.

I'm not even Madhuri's fan but she was almost worshiped in the 90s. No other actress saw that kind of super-stardom. Even today, no actress comes close to that kind of fame.

I think people associate Madhuri to their childhood - and since most people hold their childhood in high regard they also then think Madhuri was this enormous star. She is, I'm not saying she wasn't. But I don't think she's as big as you are saying

Alia has surpassed even Madhuri With a Raazi doing 100 crore business
Priyanka has surpassed Madhuri in popularity with her international stardom
Vidya has surpassed Madhuri in acting 10 years ago

@Dia: I am not even comparing Madhuri's fandom with Alia's.
I always acknowledge Madhuri was the biggest female superstar, the only female who has given 5 HGOTY.

But my point is simple, Bollywood has always emphasised more on popularity even if it meant worshipping mediocrity. Especially since the 70s-80s when star power took over the content. I don't get this blaming everything on Kjo and Alia for the so called mediocrity is unfair.

HANK being an all time classic doesn't change the fact it was not an excellent movie, it was a memorable one definitely but not a great one. And Madhuri was nothing great in that movie.

I agree with the childhood thing. A lot of people today miss the 90s simply because of nostalgia, and ignore various regressive and pathetic aspects of the 90s.

But I am NOT talking about Madhuri's fan following today, I am talking about the craze for her in the 90s.

Also, the comparisons don't make sense to me.

1) The "100 crore" criteria for the success of a film DID NOT exist until 2008.

2) Kudos to Priyanka but its like saying, Priyanka surpassed Sridevi with her international stardom. LOL!
Sridevi and Madhuri never had eyes on international fame. In fact, it was not even a thing back then.

3) Vidya is INDEED a great actress but so is Madhuri. Madhuri also had classical dance training to her benefit. And anyways they worked in different time period where roles for heroines way different. Though I still think, Madhuri did better films and still has bigger following.

With such a fast rise for her (not self made imo) .there is a downfall. If her career and connections has been honest and will remain like that without people pulling the strings for her...she will last. but I think people have done that very initially in her career where no other actress gets that luxury..so she will be able to support herself now since she proved she can act. I feel bad for saying this..but part of alia's appeal is her youth. You can't deny that. She appeals to the youth and people like her, especially kids because she gives off vibes as if she is a 16 year old girl and she's cute. Superstar actresses need to be able to act...but they also have the looks and some kind of sex appeal. She has absolutely nothign about her looks where I wuld just go to a movie to watch her. If the movie is bad, even worse. Her acting and content of the movies has bought me in to see her. Without those,...how do you even consider remotely a star. You need a screen presence and aura, she does not have it.

@BOLD
Absolutely agreed. Don't understand the hate.

Also, comparing Alia and Madhuri's fanbase is like comparing Ranveer Singh's fanbase with Dilip Kumar's. The huge generation gap makes the entire debate pointless.

Regarding Madhuri in HAHK,
To each their own but I still believe she deserved all the accolades, considering it was a mainstream film role in 1994, and the film was a blockbuster across India.

Now it may seem like a boring, old-school and not-so-great film but it was one of its kind when it came, and the craze for that film grew leaps and bound over the years.

Call me mad, but I don't see that happening for Raazi. It certainly is the best film of 2018 though.

But ALIA == MADHURI (at her peak in the 90s) ??
NEVER😆

@Dia: Again I am not comparing Maduri's stardom with Alia's because Alia cannot reach that level because in India to have that kind of stardom for a female actor, they have to be a sex symbol, which Alia cannot be.

HANK is an enjoyable movie and deserved its success, but it was not something worthy for winning best film or whatever awards. So didn't Madhuri, so let's agree to disagree.

And obviously the enjoy the status of HANK because Raazi is not a typical Bollywood commercial movie, not something which can be telecasted in television on repeat and people still watch it again and again.
But that doesn't mean HANK is a better movie, it is just that HANK has more entertaining moments while Raazi is a serious movie.

Rinku Rajguru in her debut film was relatable, likable and gave an absolute firecracker of a performance. It is difficult to believe that it was her first film. Archie was such a wondrous character. But her career is nascent and she's barely done two films and the comparison to Bollywood actors is premature and unfair.
