P.S. - I dislike Kjo but enjoy Dharma films😆

P.P.S. - I don't GAF about Sid & Alia (they were both horrible), but Varun was pretty good in that crapfest SOTY despite getting the short end of the stick he managed to stand out as per most critics, mainly yahi kehna tha😆

KJO movies were crap and candy floss always from KKHH. But what was real was he had heart that you could see. Especially MNIK you could see his sincere effort though the movie was a thud. After that I think he changed IMO.

Well somebody found them good enough to take a risk on them and spend their money creating a product starring them based on their audition. So you may find them mediocre but the people who actually spend money disagree.

For a starkid, they take a risk based on pedigree or family connections. Not everyone chooses wisely like KJO . That is why the many star sons launched during 80s are no more and people like Harsh give heavy BO losses to people like ROMP and Motwane. Sonam would not have a career without her family producing films and pretty much all the ones launched by Bhai are duds.

ETA: Also which outsider is willing to work in auditions, face casting couch, live in apartments with multiple room mates when you can become an engineer like Sushant and Karthik were training for, get a job in an MNC, go abroad. You have to really want it badly. Even people with connections like Vicky Kaushal had to hustle. Look at Kiara, the kinds of movies she gets despite being connected to some famous names though not directly. Saiyami Kher is the niece of Shabana. Where are her film offers after Mirzya ? We can see in Ishaan and Jhanvi the difference connections make probably even if you are "starkid"

Karthik Aryan auditioned from 6 months before landing a role. Sushant was dancing, did theater while looking for a break. Ekta's people auditioned him after seeing him in something. You think they would have let them just walk into an office and blind audition for them because he wanted to be an actor ?

Aloo and her mom walked into KJO's office. Varun was AD, Harsh was AD and before that ROMP saw him during Sonam's movie. Manish Malhotra recommended Jhanvi. Harsh was AD too, so were Ranbir and Sonam. They were already in the industry in some capacity probably interning before they were noticed. What kind of an audition do you think they would have had vs an outsider ?

I don't know about alia, but varun did give lots of auditions. He gave audition for movies for ads heck even for tv serials. He went to these lot of acting schools and made some short films during that time ,after being ad of kjo. Then once he showed karan and ayaan his short film in which he did act really well after which karan decided to cast him.
And for outsiders auditioning not all of them do that. Ranveer and dp didn't do. And what kind of auditions did kat jackie and nargis gave that they got selected. Even ishaan did not gave audition for dhadak. That girl in munna Michael is also an outsider, these are the type of outsider we are getting through auditions

Yeah all those films have immense repeat value, but one can barely jhelo a film like ADHM once max, I personally feel shift in his nature/image happened during SRK-PC-Gauri drama or more specifically after KJO's fallout with SRK, that's when he took upon the role of proving himself as a starmaker than a filmmaker.

Nobody hates Dharma other than people whose favs don't get roles with Dharma. They make big happy films which pseudos pretend to hate nowadays because they've decided only gritty village-set movies or ones in slums and showing hardships in the name of realism are worthy. Realistic movies are not necessarily any better than fantastical ones. There is room for everything and movies are make-believe in the first place. They can transport you to other worlds and are not lesser for it.

The nepotism debate with never end and most of it doesn't even make sense. Nobody is entitled to anything. There is no reason why Karan Johar has to audition people for a year and pluck them out of nowhere and spend crores making movies for them. Nobody "deserves" anything.

The reason star kids get launched so quickly is that they offer up visibility and publicity right from the beginning. It's a business after all. Karan Johar doesn't do it out of either malice towards outsiders or out of the goodness of his heart for insiders. He does it because they sell. Dhadak wouldn't have gotten even half the interest it does now if it had two random outsiders in it. They would have to increase the publicity budget so much and it still wouldn't get great results. Star kids are already known and will provide at least a certain opening and reduce losses even in case of a flop.

Indians are obsessed with dynasty whether in movies or politics or anything else. They are curious to see these kids and whether or not they have their parents' talent. Look at the interest Taimur generates. Check out instagram and gossip sites like Pinkvilla - Suhana's posts get more likes than the top actresses do. Her pics are the most viewed of the day and top even the A list actresses. Of course producers and directors will capitalize on the interest the public already has in these kinds of people.

Outsiders already know how the industry works. Don't get into it if you can't handle it. Or go through television because no insiders are interested in it. Go through the beauty pageants. I'm sure everyone will be happy to launch Manushi Chillar despite not knowing if she has any talent. You have to make your own path if you want to succeed.

Then Varun is like Ranbir who went to acting school. Ranveer has a minor in theater from the US. He also worked in an ad agency yet he also went for auditions. he probably used his connections/wealth for auditioning for Shanoo but Adi Chopra did see his tape and then chose him. KJO has said he did not like him in the beginning when he just saw him in YRF because he looked ordinary. Only after seeing him on screen was he convinced. So obviously Adi saw something in the audition.

Fantasy movies are movies like starwars, Harry Potter, LOTR, Avengers. They have whimsy. They create their own narrative and worlds. They are not grounded in reality. Heck, I would say the same for Ekta's Naagin series in India. They need not be grounded in reality.

KJO's movies are allegedly about real people set in real locations that deal with social justice issues like caste and honor killings in Dhadak, Stage 4 cancer in ADHM, discrimination in MNIK, adultery in KANK. These are serious issues not fantasy. They have to be grounded in reality. You cannot wrap it up pretty. That is an insult to these issues and shoddy film making. This is not the Naagin series. That is the crux of why Dharma does not get respect and is banged on by critics. There is a difference between treating social justice issues with an element of fantasy in the name of commercialization and the actual fantasy genre.
