Watched DHADAK today, I enjoyed it overall. It was a decent movie, good launch pad for Janhvi and Ishaan. Ishaan was impressive - very seasoned for a new actor - and Janhvi was good, will hopefully get better over time. Her dialogue delivery was better in the movie than in the trailer, but she was lacking in the emotional scenes. Ishaan did very well for his 1st/2nd movie, he seemed very comfortable with the material and picked up the Rajasthani accent and even the few Bengali phrases well. I have not watched SAIRAT so don't know much about it, but this movie is very Romeo and Juliet / (1st half of) Raam-Leela type. The climax was definitely quite shocking because it came out of nowhere and the movie ends quite abruptly too.

Dhadak Starts Pretty Well
Friday 20 July 2018 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Dhadak opened pretty well with occupancy of 30-35% which is a little better than Raazi and it also a wider release. This is because Dhadak has more in it for the youth compared to a Raazi. On the other side as the film is aimed more towards the youth the evening / night collections may not be as strong as Raazi.

The opening is pretty good all over with East Punjab and Mysore being the lags. Mysore does not open well for most films as its a Saturday circuit while East Punjab and most of Delhi will not come initially for a new cast film unless its action and visually grand. Despite some circuits being low the film has a good chance to beat the highest opening day numbers of a newcomer film which is 7.50 crore nett apprx of Student Of The Year.

On the other side the film is not a Bobby, Love Story, Betaab, Barsaat or Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai where newcomer films took bumper / excellent openings but those days are probably over unless a producer has the conviction to make 100 crore plus budget film with newcomers.

The top ten openings in 2018 in terms of occupancy in morning shows are as follows

1. Baaghi 2 - 57.5%

2. Race 3 - 50%

3. Sanju - 47.5%

4. Padmaavat - 42.5%

5. Veere Di Wedding - 35%

6. Dhadak - 30-35%

7. Raazi - 30%

8. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety - 27.5%

9. Padman - 22.5%

10. Hichki - 22.5%

I think this is what happens when someone tries to attempt remaking something as powerful as Sairat. People start questioning the intent than watching the remake as a standalone film. Most of the reviews I've read are like comparison polls which shouldn't be the case with critics. They should look at a film independently and not in comparison to its source. When Sairat released, it did not have any source to fall back on hence it was enjoyable. I think even Dhadak might be the same if we stop looking at it as the hindi version of Sairat.

I have no issues with criticism of any kind to a film and the actors but the tone of such reviews are different. Here it almost looks like they were hate watching it and had already planned which word to which to write a 'smart' and 'funny' review. This leads to the critics giving free way to the original while nitpicking with a magnifying glass when it comes to the remake. I read in a review that Parthavi stays in a palace turned hotel yet goes to a local pond to take bath as if there's no toilet in her house conveniently forgetting that even in Sairat, Archie goes for a dip into the local well despite having a well made bathroom in her house. It's all about the characters the film is trying to show. Do we see any girl of high caste spending time in a local pond/well used by commoners? No, but Archie and Parthavy do that because of their character traits. Because they are assertive and will do whatever they feel like without giving a damn about societal norms.
Anupama said Parthavy wears good clothes in Udaipur. What else would a rich girl having a royal lineage wear? They'll obviously wear good clothes because they can afford them.

Well if you remember in Sairat Archie's mom is drying home made papads that she drives the scooter over and Ishaan runs over the pappad his mom is drying in Dhadak. So there you see the difference in lifestyle;e. Archie is a small village whose lifestyle is more like Madhu, not Parthavi. Parthavi sounds more like Saif who even without being an actor has a family palace, wore designer clothing, probably went for holidays abroad. Can you see Sharmila Tagore drying pappads ? 😆

That I think is the disconnect. Easier to believe Archie will jump into a well despite being rich than Parthavi. Dharma fantasy of Dhadak, rural lifestyle reality of Sairat. I think you are biased as the critics in this. 😛 😆

Ishaan Khatter

The most engaging sequence in Dhadakfeatures a Rajasthani version of Telly Games. The triathlon that celebrates gluttony requires one to gobble down tiny mountains of ghevar, khachoris and mirchis. The winner of the pratiyogita is unsurprisingly the film's hero who is handed out his prize by the film's heroine. Their eyes lock and it all goes south from here on.

Ishaan Khatter: Dhadak was tougher to do than my debut film

Adapted from Nagraj Manjule's stupendous hit Sairat, this one picks up the plot points that delivered in the story of forbidden love and makes a dal baati churma of it. A reserved Romeo from Udaipur meets a brusque chori. Madhukar (Ishaan Khatter) wants a pappi', while Parthavi (Janhvi Kapoor) aspires for "maara ghar over "badi kothi. But this college romance is punctured by caste and class divide. That the girl's papa is also an unforgiving politician, warrants desperate measures and the two flee to make a life together in Kolkata. Now in Sairat, at this point, reality supersedes romance and the young couple is compelled to grow up in a jiffy if they must survive. It is also a trying time for the privileged girl who discovers mundane chores and the predicament of using a community toilet. But here, a series of writing oversights lead to much hotchpotch. For one, our Rajasthani jodi went to the same class in college but when in Kolkata, she bags a job with a call centre and he begins waiting tables at a modest eatery. And if you must know, he was also a tour guide in Udaipur catering to foreigners. Let's just blame it on the City of Joy?

Sairat touched a necessary nerve with its compelling performances and for effectively translating what the lead pair endures. Here, the female lead throws on a pair of aviators and gets on a big bike but is not a patch on the feisty Archie that Rinku Rajguru rocked on the big screen. Also, Parthavi has her hair and makeup on point through the film when she's being chased out of town or having an emotional outburst. It's almost as if makeup didi and stylist dada were inadvertently a part of her tumultuous journey.

Debutante Kapoor conveys a range of emotions with the same facial expression. Sometimes an eyebrow goes up like an inverted Howrah bridge; at other times, the eyelids flicker like an ageing tubelight but it's rarely in sync with the proceedings. But Kapoor's insipid performance allows Khatter to shine in comparison. The young actor plunges into every emotion and situation his character finds himself in with complete immersion. Always a reliable rowdy, Ashutosh Rana packs his Ratan Singh with a distinguished evil streak and conveys intimidation through his nefarious character. Director Shashank Khaitan, who previously helmed Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania andBadrinath Ki Dulhania, plays it safe with this Rajasthani runaway bride. Sticking to tested tropes, he barely reinvents the premise of the original.

Manjule's masterpiece was a touching tale of caste conflict. It covered societal evils while breezing through the various stages of an intimate relationship. The evolution of its characters was fluid and the final jolt was hair-raising. Dhadak is only a first copy from Thailand that milks the original to a point that the cow would deem objectionable.

Well the reviews mirror the criticisms several of us made after seeing the trailer, songs and designer dresses.🤔. This was expected, nothing new, predictable, this is Dharma. Shashank and KJo incapable of tackling serious issues with truth and having to prettify it.
But glad to see Ishaan and Jhanvi get praises (mostly). Despite the criticism of the movie their work is seen and that is all I care about for they were wonderful offscreen.

The movie will still make money and it is because of the two newbies who certainly deserve to be in BW IMO.
