Varun Dhawan has seen an unprecendented box office success streak for a newcomer. 9 back-to-back successful films!
The question is...can he make it 10 with October?
October has a major plus points going for it on face value: Varun Dhawan, the star, and Shoojit Sircar, the director, who himself has been on a successful run as a director since his second film Vicky Donor released in 2012. A star of the masses (Varun), and a director of the classes (Shoojit Sircar).
Alas...this is where the positives end!
The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that the trailer gives a very Lootera-type vibe. Nothing wrong with that as a film, given that Lootera was very well-appreciated by critics and the award shows...but very wrong at a box office level, as Lootera failed badly in that department. Slow, intense, dark love stories rarely work with the Indian audience, as history has shown. Take for example, a recent film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil: the audience generally liked the more light-hearted first half of the film, but they rejected the second half of the film where the film got very intense and heavy on the heart!
As often is said, the Indian audience wants entertainment. Baaghi 2, which released recently, had entertainment in abundance for the Indian audience. October, on the hand, appears to be the exact opposite!
Another problem is that it's a mass star (Varun) coming in a class film. That in itself will disappoint his core fan base. Kids, which form a major chunk of his fanbase as well, would not appreciate this type of film. As it is, Varun's dialogue delivery in the trailer has been met with quite some criticism, although it will be interesting to see how his overall performance is rated by the audience after watching the film.
My Box Office Predictions for October:
Lifetime Collections: 45 crore nett
Overall Verdict: Flop
