In general, however, I don't understand why the Oscars are given such gravity. I certainly don't think Indian Bollywood stars or movies have a need to be validated by a Hollywood awards function. The Indian film industry is a towering and prolific industry more than capable of standing on its own.

At a time when even Indian award functions has dropped the in memoriam segment for song and dance, it's great to see a Hollywood award function pay tribute to Sridevi and Shashi Kapoor. They also paid a tribute to Om Puri. And I guess they did because of the impact these actors had in international arenas as well despite Sri doing only Indian films. Her obituary was also posted in many mainstream publications as well. I think Chandni played a big role in her getting international recognition due to the craze behind Yash Chopra films abroad and so did Khuda Gawah. I don't know if it's true but I read on wiki that she was also given a civilian award by the Afghanistan Govt for her work in Khuda Gawah.

Its a really good thing that shashi kapoor and sridevi were honoured at Oscars. We Indians always give Oscars more importance than it deserves. One thing that I have noticed about Oscars is the quality and dignity they maintain throughout the event. Most of our Bollywood award shows are nothing but cheap comedies and dance performances. Sri only did Indian movies but given tribute by american film industry is truly honoured.
