Pari' film review: This one will chill you

Anushka Sharma's horror film is a world apart from other ghoulish Bollywood offerings, and that's a good thing

[SPOILER ALERT]

Hindi horror films have often got the rap for being unintentionally funny with their terrible acting, overload of creaky door sounds and evil men parading in bad prosthetic make-up.

Pari, the supernatural thriller starring Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee with an 18+ rating in the UAE, doesn't suffer from those near-fatal flaws.

Be warned though, it's heavy on the gore with its bloody twists. But it doesn't bore you. As far as atmospherics go, the incessant grey pallor with heavy rains throughout the film create the perfect setting for doom and gloom.

Directed by newcomer Prosit Chatterjee, the monster-meets-mortal romance begins on an innocent note with Parambrata Chatterjee's introverted character subjecting himself to an arranged marriage set-up where he's getting to know the prospective bride. But on their way back, their car, driven by his father, hits an old woman, and that sets the film in motion.

In the interest of not revealing too many spoilers, let's cut to the performances.

Sharma, who plays the uncivilised Rukhsana, is in top form as a modern-day feral Mowgli. Her introductory scenes are shockingly real and send a chill down our spine. She must take a bow for getting her hands dirty, literally, in this one. Without a scratch of make-up on, she's at once vulnerable, vile and vicious. Chatterjee is a quiet presence, but he still manages to leave a lasting impression.

This film is well-cast with actors such as Rajat Kapoor, the leader of a doomsday movement a controversial group that takes pride in exorcism. Their methods of annihilating evil are visually graphic and therefore disturbing, but credit has to be given to the director for not holding back. Here's a horror film that isn't subtle every gory twist is laid out in front of our eyes. Is it necessary? Not always. But do you look away? No.

Pari is the cinematic equivalent of a driver rubber-necking when there's an accident on the road. You know you must look away, but you just can't help yourself from turning your neck to the site of the accident. It's compelling, but leaves you eventually disturbed.

While Sharma and Chatterjee make an unlikely pair, their relationship trajectory isn't wholly believable. You are not alone if you feel dubious at the romantic twists in this horror film.

The first half of Pari, which means angel, seems to suffer from schizophrenia with its attempt to blend romance into a plot that's decidedly dark and ghoulish. In a perfect demonic world, there's no space for a romantic song, but the makers of Pari march ahead and still stick in a song anyway. However, the director seems to get his command back in the second half as its morbidity quotient goes up. There are twists that aren't predictable, but the climax suffers from a touch of unnecessary melodrama.

Kapoor as the determined exorcist isn't an easy man to like, but that's his victory in such a film. Watch this if you are in the mood for a gore-filled horror film.

Average horror movie. Might garner some viewers because of the genre. But will eventually fail to make a mark.

'Pari' movie review: Will Anushka's scary gamble pay off?
Anita Iyer/Dubai
Filed on March 1, 2018 | Last updated on March 1, 2018 at 03.57 pm

Anushka is comfortable to put on a battered, bruised look with blood spewed all over herself for the most part of the film.

When an A-list Bollywood actress leads a supernatural thriller and puts her money on it, you can't afford to miss it.

In spite of the trailer and multiple short screamers, there isn't much the viewers got to know about the story line of the film. Because that's what the makers intended to do -- keep the mystery intact. And that's what we will do in this review.

In Pari, Anushka Sharma dares to do what not many leading ladies would. She is comfortable to put on a battered, bruised look with blood spewed all over herself for the most part of the film. Revealing the plot would be a disservice, so we would just be touch upon it broadly.

Anushka isn't possessed but is part of a cult. She doesn't play dual roles as it might seem from the trailer, but isn't a ghost either. Within few minutes in the movie, she crosses paths with Parambrata Chattopadhyay, the actor you might remember from Vidya Balan's Kahaani. Known for his strong performances, Parambrata is in total control of his character and lends support to the leading lady.

In her bloodied self, Anushka gives you an overdose and it is to be seen if the audience embraces her daring act.

The film also stars the Bengali actress Ritabhari Chakraborty, who is Parambrata's fiance in the film. Their scenes together don't leave any impact and seem unnecessary at times.

Eye gouges are never out of fashion for a horror film and here we have Rajat Kapoor popping out his eye and putting it in a glass of water. Considering his role was pivotal to the story line, much more time could have been spent on building up his character rather than the one-dimensional role he portrays.

And the scary faces we see in the trailer, covered in all black, keep making their appearance in the film but don't add to the horror meter. You need to watch the film to know their relevance to the plot.

The film isn't scary but it will leave you with an unsettled feeling. Pari has disturbing sequences -- like the birthing scene from the trailer -- that will gross you out and make you nauseous, at least the weak-hearted ones.

Like any typical horror film in Bollywood, Pari resorts to using loud noises sporadically to startle you but fails miserably.

Anushka climbs up, jumps on to humans, bites into dogs, hangs from the window, flies midair but doesn't really send shivers down your spine. All she manages to do is leave you disturbed.

Pari is Anushka Sharma's third outing as a producer after NH10 and Phillauri and is unlike any of her earlier roles. Will her gamble pay off at the box office? Only time will tell.

Starring: Anushka Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Rajat Kapoor

Pari review: this one will LEAVE YOU DISTURBED!
Published on March 1, 2018

Movie: Pari

Cast: Anushka Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee, Mansi Multani

Director: Prosit Roy

Producer: Clean Slate Films

Rating: 3/5 Stars

It had almost become a norm for Hindi filmmakers to go ahead with the tried-and-crashed formula of terrible overdramatic acting, unintentionally comical twists and either a Sunny Leone or a Zareen Khan at the centre of it all. But, not Anushka Sharma's choice for her third production, Pari. This one here is gutsy, bold, gory and utterly disturbing, and we mean it all in a good way!

Let's get to chase now, shall we? The film begins on a rather innocent note as you see Bengali sensation Parambrata Chatterjee succumb to the norm of an arranged marriage and kick off the process of getting acquainted with his prospective bride (no points for guessing who that is). But, what sets the blood, gore and the spook in motion when on their way back, the father-son duo hit an old woman.

As far as performances are concerned, Anushka Sharma has given us enough reasons to forgive her for Jab Harry Met Sejal as she is in top form as the uncivilised Rukhshana. From the beginning to the end, she is grisly, charming and mesmerising as the vicious and vile protagonist.

Rajat Kapoor too deserves as a special mention here as the leader of a clan full of determined exorcists who take pride in their ghost-busting conquests. If you are wondering whether it all gets predictable at any point, there are very few scenes like that, but, they do not hinder your spooky experience.

However, no film comes without their fair share of flaws. Some scenes would surely come across as silly, and you will get the feeling that the relationship the two leads share hasn't grown out of anything real. Also, the only song that they have throughout the film is terribly misplaced and it all ends with a tinge of unnecessary melodrama. But, to be fair, our bars aren't all that high as far as Bollywood horror movies are concerned. So, you must not miss the film for these flaws at all.

If you're willing to get goose bumped for real after overlooking a flaw here and there, you MUST go for it!

Pari movie review: A bloodied, gory affair that's sure to chill you

By Prajakta Ajgaonkar on March 1, 2018 Movie Reviews

Directed By: Prosit Roy
Produced By: Anushka Sharma, Karnesh Sharma, Prernaa Arora, Arjun N Kapoor
Cast: Anushka Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee
Duration: 2 Hours 17 Minutes
Bollywood Bubble Rating: 3/5

Horror in Hindi cinema over the years has varied preconceived notions attached to it, the most prominent ones being bad prosthetic makeup coupled with creaky door noises. So, for once, you could proudly rest those assumptions because Anushka Sharma's Pari' stands apart on those counts.

As the title suggests, the story of Pari is no fairytale but a bloodied gory saga of a girl named Rukhsana who is said to be an evil being with some unfulfilled motive. An accidental meet with a young, soon-to-be married lad makes her land up in his house. A scared Rukhsana is escaping a gory man who is known to proudly conduct exorcism in the most disturbing manner possible. Without giving out any further spoilers, one thing we would definitely forewarn you of is to be prepared for some horrifying scenes. Well, the start itself has a lot of gore which prepares you for the disturbing journey ahead.

There's no haunted palace, no murder seeking revenge here, but tale of an evil being falling in love with a mortal. Parambrata Chatterjee's quiet and introverted character who has an arranged match setup ready finds himself in a dilemma after meeting the uncivilised and spooky Anushka Sharma. As much as we liked Parambrata's calm act, his love interest Piyali played by Ritabhari Chakraborty was equally good. However, Anushka Sharma clearly takes the cake here. As if her persona in the screamers wasn't enough, her horrifying act in the movie is class apart. No added makeup, no changes in face, yet the actress manages to send chills down your spine with her effortlessly scary performance. Add to it, the background score which gives an additional spooky effect at the right moments. Another performance that deserves mention is delivered by seasoned actor Rajat Kapoor who plays a bewitching exorcist to perfection. And who can forget the existence of Kalapori? Well, let's not get into her details and spoil it all.

While the movie does succeed to scare you and keep you on the edge of your seat, it's violent treatment with grey backdrop makes it an uncomfortable watch in major parts. Some scenes of exorcism are disturbing to the core. Also, an unwanted love angle with a predictable end is a slight letdown. But, if you're expecting to go in for a different kind of horror cinema, this one's worth your time.

'Unquestionably,#Pari is the best supernatural thriller we've seen in Hindi cinema. Sadma meets Fatal Attraction in Pari, the cocktail is heady and original '4 and a half stars, Wait for the full review #PariTomorrow

If ur a fan of the genre then #Pari is perhaps the best tribute to horror in a very long time. @AnushkaSharma delivers a performance that will haunt you for a long time while @paramspeak proves his brilliance yet again. @kriarj @OfficialCSFilms
#Pari also serves as an example of how to do horror right. Doesn't hold back. Everything from the mood to the background score are a perfect blend, creating a spooky aura that engulfs you from the very first frame. Not for the faint hearted!!
I think the last time an Indian horror film got to me was RGV's Raat. I remember avoiding going to the theatres after that's empty auditorium dream scene. Fear needs fuel of the mind and #Pari presses all the right buttons.
Under the guise of a horror film #Pari is a beautiful love story. The balancing act of fear and empathy is perhaps the strongest point of the film.
The captain of the ship who executed #Pari with such brilliance - Prosit Roy deserves a pat for not lifting or copying plots or scenes from popular Hollywood films. #Pari is a Desi folklore that will scare the daylight's out of you.

No jarring background score or cliched jump scares. Gripping, chilling, atmospheric and just the right amount of eerie silence makes #pari quite creepy, a rare feat for an Indian horror film. Spellbinding performances by @AnushkaSharma & @paramspeak Liked the film.

We just watched #Pari and can't wait to share how spooked we are! Easily the best horror film to hit theatres in a very long time. @AnushkaSharma @OfficialCSFilms @paramspeak @kriarj

Pari review: Anushka Sharma's film has more thrills than chills a socially relevant film with a beating heart

Devansh Sharma

Mar,02 2018 00:22:02 IST

All the seven screamers of Prosit Roy's Pari established that the film offers no happily ever afters. Not a fairytale, its title warned. But the screamers only capture the best of chills that the film serves on a cold platter. The misleading elements from the screamers can be forgiven for the film could not afford to reveal any of the thrills that its brilliant story and screenplay entail.

This makes it all the more difficult to spell out a first impression of the film without giving away any spoilers. But as a fair warning to horror buffs, this one is more of a thriller than a spine chiller.

Anushka Sharma in a still from Pari. YouTube

Anushka Sharma in a still from Pari. YouTube

Anushka Sharma plays Ruksana, an orphan who is found in a chained and battered state in the midst of a Kolkata forest. Having his car accidentally run over her mother, Aurnab (Parambrata Chatterjee) decides to give her refuge. However, gradually, he discovers how she has much more within herself than a lot of pain and history.

To divulge any more details would be criminal, not only to the viewers but also the writers and editors who have displayed exceptional craftsmanship.

Kudos to Anushka Sharma for always backing stories of the heartland with a beating heart, irrespective of the genre. She delivers to perfection both in the capacity of a producer and an actor.

After portraying complicated and conflicted roles in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Jab Harry Met Sejal, she takes her game several notches higher. Through her body language, expressions and dialogue delivery, she lends a multitude of emotions to her well-etched character, ranging from barbarity to empathy.

Lending good support to Anushka is Parambrata, whose presence and solid acting shines in Pari, and it's a talent the Hindi film watching audience has already enjoyed in Kahaani.

Rajat Kapoor pulls off an evil character with consummate ease. He plays a Bangladeshi professor and a witch-hunter in the most literal sense. Ably assisted by effective prosthetic, his sinister expressions pierce through layers of pancakes.

Prosit handles the film with conviction. He seems to be the cohesive that ties all the departments together, including the eerie background score, the aptly lit cinematography, the meticulous production design and the inventive writing and editing.

Pari intelligently slips in socio-political commentary, addressing the Bangladesh refugee crisis. The underlying message that the film tries to bring home is that one's identity is not dictated by boundaries laid down either by humans, nature or even the supernatural. One may not realise the film's symbolic relevance while watching it, given its immersive treatment, but it does offer a resolution.

Finally, if you're going into Pari expecting a scary experience, you may be let down for there are no horror elements incorporated into the film. But what's in abundance are moments sure to keep you glued to the screen for the entire run-time, thanks to the conviction of a Bollywood leading lady to tell a good story.

Pari Movie Review: One Of The BEST To Come Out Of This Genre

Giving us Pari, he has proved how Bollywood can really churn up a horror film minus skin show, overacting and cringe-worthy script.

Pari Movie Review Rating: 3.5/5 Stars (Three and a half stars)

Star Cast: Anushka Sharma, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rajat Kapoor, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Mansi Multani

Pari Movie Review

What's Good: A horror movie without any cliched haunted-house moments, goosebump background score & a scary story which makes sense.

What's Bad: Loses the grip in between and boasts some over-the-top hyperbolic moments.

Loo Break: Those who're not used to this genre could take a loo break forcibly.

Watch or Not?: Even if you aren't a fan of horror flicks, you should give this a try for numerous chilling moments and outstanding performances.

The story unfolds introducing a sweet introvert Arunabh (Parambrata Chatterjee) as he meets his type of girl Piyali (Ritabhari Chakraborty) in an arranged marriage kind of setup. With few interesting turn of events, Arunabh meets Rukhsana (Anushka Sharma) chained in an abandoned house. Yes, she's supernatural, but is she evil? Prosit (director) maintains this mystery till the end. Enters the devilish twist, Professor Khasim Ali (Rajat Kapoor) playing one the most complicated & intriguing characters written for him.

With the entrance of Rukhsana in Arunabh's life, things start to get complicated between him and Piyali. Rukhsana comes with a dark backstory which Roy decides to unfold bit by bit till the end. Who is a professor, why he is in the search of Rukhsana and many such questions remain unanswered till the crux of the movie arrives?

Pari Movie Review

Pari Movie Review: Script Analysis

Penned by Prosit and Abhishek Banerjee, this surely is one of the best stories to come out of Bollywood. The level of intriguing gets so high at times you kind of ignored some of the silliest loopholes. The love track between Anushka & Parambrata has a graph fluctuating with every passing scene. At points, the situations are so real but sometimes you just can't bear them. I had few seats empty to my left and right but in many scenes, I felt the thumping near my seats caused by a guy sitting many seats away.

Horror surely is not there for the entire time, but for the time it's there it scares you. Beautifully executed spooky scenes and their sudden occurrences are paisa-vasool for fans of this genre. The story gets transported from Kolkata to Bangladesh, present to flashback but Roy manages to keep it as simple as possible. For any horror movie, the moment of devil-revelation is the soul & Pari excels in this section.

Pari Movie Review: Star Performance

Anushka Sharma, obviously, is in an avatar no one could've ever imagined it. We saw some thrilling traces in her during NH10, but in Pari she has aimed for a home run and succeeds in achieving it towards the climax. She is beautiful & horrific at the same time. The unpredictability of her character, the variation of her facial expressions are the results of one amazingly written character.

Parambrata Chatterjee fulfills the director's vision as a pro. His unusual chemistry with Anushka Sharma works well. When you have someone as talented as Anushka Sharma having time of her life with her character, one tends to get into a shell but Parambrata overcomes this with his brilliant presence.

Rajat Kapoor has nailed his character, yet again. From his first frame, he proves why he's considered as a legend in this field. His one-eyed touch will really disgust many but that's what the makers intend to do so. Ritabhari Chakraborty looks super cute and has some very important sequences in the second half. Her overflowing charm supports her act as she gives a good performance.

Pari Movie Review: Direction, Music

Prosit Roy, making his debut with Pari, is the real hero of the film. Scripting a complicated story, teaming up a stellar cast and delivering a product within a controlled budget is not every first-timer can do. Though he has chosen a tough genre for his debut, it would really be interesting to see what he does next. Giving us Pari, he has proved how Bollywood can really churn up a horror film minus skin show, overacting and cringe-worthy script.

Usually, it's the music composer who's credited first in this section but Pari has a winner in its background score composer Ketan Sodha. Apart from Talvar and Vicky Donor, Pari is Ketan's third movie as a full-time composer. The nail-cutter effect, the music of cartoon channel, thumping of doors; Ketan covers this scary canvas with his spine-chilling effects. There's just one song in the film composed by Anupam Roy and it serves well as a situational track.

Pari Movie Review: The Last Word

Hollywood, please take out the notepad and write down the stuff from Pari on how to make a non-cliched horror film. Surely one of the best in this genre & a must watch for the fans. Producer Anushka Sharma needs a special mention to make this possible.

Three and a half stars!

Verdict - Pari: Perhaps Bollywood's Best Attempt At Horror Genre So Far

PariWatch trailerRelease date : March 02, 2018

There was a time where horror movies in Bollywood were advertised as Laash Ka Mountain, Khoon Ka Fountain'. From ghosst in white sarees and possessed, loving wives in lonely castle, Pari is a testament to how far Bollywood has come over the years. After struggling with horror as a genre for ages, Pari is Bollywood's first step in the right direction.

The story is difficult to discuss without giving out major spoilers, but what can be said without a shadow of doubt that this is the first time Bollywood has bothered to craft the script of a horror film so carefully. The first half of the movie does not shy away from giving you jump scares and heart attacks moments are plenty, but even then somehow your mind remains more occupied with the story- again a rarity in Bollywood horror films. The film grips you within first 5 minutes and is successful in keeping you hooked till the very end.

Praise is reserved for debutante director Prosit Roy, who comes across as a filmmaker with a crystal clear vision that does not go astray even for a second. He knows exactly what he wants and not a single frame looks unnecessary or forced. The amount of blood and gore in the film is a little surprising by Bollywood standards, but Roy shows a deep understanding of his craft by balancing out the gore with satisfiable substantiation.

Coming to performances Anushka Sharma steals the show and it is her film entirely and not just because of the star value. She transitions from vulnerable to scary with the finesse of a pro. In the history of horror movies, I think, this is the first time she makes you feel for the evil. A tricky job for sure. Parambrata Chattopadhyay, as usual, gives a measured performance that has every ingredient in just the right amount and goes to show why he is considered one of the finest actors in regional Bengali cinema. Debutante Ritabhari Chakroborty does not have the meatiest role to sink her teeth into, but delivers in the limited play area she has been assigned. However, the best part about the cast is perhaps Rajat Kapoor who has made Professor Qasim Ali one of the most intriguing things about the film. If you, even for a second, forgot the calibre of Rajat Kapoor, this film would be a great reminder.

The film's cinematography also warrants a special mention. The gloom of rain drenched Kolkata, the bamboo orchard and slimy ponds of semi-rural Bengal, or the meandering alleys of North Kolkata, the cinematographer Jishnu Bhattacharjee, seamlessly weaves the delicate texture of Kolkata and Bengal without unnecessarily romanticising the backdrop or engaging in the usual cliches. Finally one Bollywood film set in Kolkata without a shot of Howrah Bridge, is refreshing to say the least. The music of the film is also a great contributor to the way the film makes you feel. Music director Ketan Sodha has crafted a sound that strikes just the perfect amount of haunting and heartfelt, which is actually the best way to sum up the films. Also, the make up department deserves so much praise for contributing so greatly to the film.

However, the film is not entirely flawless, of course. The first half although gripping in terms of jump scares offers no insight to the story at all. The knots have been crafted with a lot of patience and the director indulges in carefully layering up the narrative, which sometimes even feel somewhat convoluted. But come the first few minutes of second half and the knot is opened with a quick pull that almost feels jerky to the pace of the film.

The ending is also a little predictable which sort of kills the fun a little.

But taking all into account, Pari is a genre bending attempt at horror that definitely deserves both your time and money.

I went alone.. AND I went in middle day when offices were still on thinking I'll get less scared during day time.. very bad decision!! meaning i was the only one in my own row.. and it was dark inside and I was an idiot not to have thought of these things!..
and the first half scared the bejeezus out of me and I am not proud to say I really didn't see quite a bit of the movie as I closed my eyes.. come interval I got up moved seats to a bunch of girls couple of seats back to that I had someone human to scream with but actually see who is screaming! 😆
Second half was even more eerier if it was possible and thank god I moved seats.. I still ended up closing my eyes at the more gory scenes.. but less than earlier...

So here is the opinion of a person who has NEVER made it to a horror flick before this.. i have watched a total of 1 Hindi horror movie in DVD because a friend forced me and it was Sharpit and I had nightmares and made my mom come to the bathroom with me for weeks..So this so is not my genre...
So my sage advice is well don't go alone.. take someone to watch it with you when you go! And make sure you don't end up going back to an empty apartment..

Ok now coming to the actual movie.. It did what it was supposed to do... it scared me.. and it creeped me out.. and after a very long time I honestly forgot it was actors in the roles.. I mean I love Anushka...But towards the end when she would appear I would have rather had anyone else except Ruksana on the screen! And by the very end ended up feeling for her! Ughh it's weird how you actually wanted to give evil a chance at a fairytale...
Don't wanna give spoilers as to what the plot it... it wasn't too complicated and the treatment was good.. neither too much info or too little.. it does engage your attention & mostly your emotions the entire time and keep you guessing how this 'not a fairytale' ending will go..

Everyone was great in their roles and they were all just characters in this than actors to me.. Everyone honestly were amazing!! And I'm not telling this as a fan cz I honestly didn't see actors when i watched this.,

And a special mention to the amazing sound track!! It was superlative!! Haunting and beautiful, heartrending at the same time.. making it a perfect foil to the eerier yet heartfelt storyline & backdrop..
