Watched the film.
- LOVED the performances of the entire trio. I found this to be Deepika's best performance (and what an upgrade from Mastani) in an SLB film. She really owned the 2nd half. Ranveer was awesome as Khilji I actually loved the OTT it was so engaging to watch him on screen. Shahid (who I think people are being a bit unfair towards) did great with a character that wasn't written the best. All 3 put it a ton of hard work and you could see it. The Ranveer/Shahid scenes were phenomenal and Shahid/DP had wonderful chemistry.

- Aditi and Jim were great also. Sad that the Rajput side-characters (besides that one old woman can't remember her name) were so blah. We need a Ranveer-Jim spinoff or something because damn that chemistry was wild!

- Music was okay. It just felt a bit random sometimes but Binte Dil was beautiful and full Ghoomar was splendid.
- Movie could've been shorter by like 40 minutes it did drag at parts.

Overall it was well-worth the watch (especially the last 30 minutes that were SO good). Beautiful outfits, good performances, don't understand people jumping in with their feminism stuff with the Jauhar people need to remember that this is a period drama in the 13th Century and that for these women this was their best option. I'm glad it's doing well at the BO let it's success be a slap in the face for all the dumb controversies (that make no sense after watching it b/c it's a complete ode to Rajputs).

Favorite Scene: Where Padmavati is leaving the dungeon and looks up to Mehrunisa and they bid each other goodbye. Really felt very powerful and a strong touch to the quiet strength of these women.

Back from watching. It is one of those films that must be watched on the big screen to appreciate the grandeur of it. It's a grand epic of a movie. SLB deserves praise for the scope and magnificence of this one and the effort. I don't think a lot of CGI was used compared to Bahubali. SLB has outdone himself with this one with the costumes, sets, though I would prefer it to be more colorful. I've always associated Rajasthan with color, though I've never seen it in person, only in pictures. I found the palette muted a bit. I was expecting more color.
Deepika's look. I have a love hate one with this one. The irony is I consider her one of the most beautiful faces on the BW screen of all times. But IDK what SLB does with her, every time she is supposed to play a woman of exceeding beauty, I don't connect with it. I found her most beautiful as Leela, not Mastani and certainly not Padmavathi. But performance wise she redeemed herself for me as Padmavathi after a rather disastrous Mastani.

Shahid has the rather thankless job of being the hero. A good man. But he comes across as righteous and pompous at times and I wanted his ego to be punctured. But a very earnest performance and I could connect with him. He may not get a lot of awards, but I think this is one of his finest,

Chemistry between Shahid and Deepika was missing but I will forever be influenced in a historical by the sizzling chemistry of Jodha Akbar. That is on me. But Deepika has twice appeared in a SLB historical now with zero chemistry with her costars. I like Deepika's chemistry with many actors when she wears normal clothes and even as Leela with Ranveer. But somehow the two historicals she did not have it with her co-stars. Both times SLB historicals. Wonder what happened.

But the chemistry with Ranveer and Jimmy was sizzling. Someone make another movie with them. A non historical one. I really loved how they played off each other.

The whole Khiiji falling for Padmavathi without seeing her was a bit hard to swallow. Was she a possession he wanted to have ? Like a collection ? Was she intended to be a conquest like a fine jewel ? Never explained . But then again SLB never explained or showed the great love story in BM. This one did make more sense if I assumed stalking, obsession.

Last of all Ranveer. This role needed him to prepare, to go to uncomfortable places. And he did it. For all his real life antics, this is why I love the man. His dedication and how he prepares. The effort he puts in. In an industry where a last name can get you in more than talent and we have to suffer through mediocrity, he is one of the reasons I still watch BW. Not his finest performance, I liked Baji Rao better. But I did not see Ranveer in this, he fully disappeared into the role.

Verdict: A one time watch and that too needs to be on the big screen to appreciate the grandeur. A bit tedious. This is no Darr, a repeat watch. This is no Jodha Akbar or even HDDCS with the repeatability. SLB seems to be losing the repeatability factor with each movie. But good performances and massive effort needs to appreciated.

Wow! Thanks for sharing. We had studied about the Fort Of Chittor in history back in school.

How is it that Padmini is considered fictional? Very confusing, kya sach hai, kya nahi - hard to know. Howcome there are palaces and forts if these characters did not exist?

Anyway, going to watch Padmavat next week. Really excited.

Padmaavat box office collection Day 3: Deepika Padukone's film is on fire

A still from Padmaavat

Padmaavat is setting the box office ablaze. After crossing the Rs 50-crore mark within just two days of its release (including paid previews), the period drama has raked in around Rs 32.50 crore on Saturday, according to early estimates.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor and the team of Padmaavat must be breathing a sigh of relief. The film has been in the eye of a storm ever since the filmmaker began shooting in Jaipur. Several groups have been protesting against Padmaavat, alleging that the film distorts history and demeans the honour of Rajput queen, Rani Padmini.

After several hurdles, Padmaavat hit the theatres, and despite not being screened in some parts of the country, the film is on a roll at the box office. In fact, the team of Padmaavat did not promote their film at all. The Deepika, Ranveer and Shahid-starrer was in the news every other day, courtesy the controversy surrounding it.

Padmaavat is a re-imagining of Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic poem Padmavat, written in the 16th century. It revolves around Alauddin Khilji's siege of Chittorgarh fort in 1303, in an attempt to capture the beautiful Rani Padmini, who committed jauhar (self-immolation) to avoid falling into his clutches.

A lot of history that dates back hundreds of years was not written down or documented and instead was passed down verbally through poems, bards and folk songs. This is especially true of the Rajputana, because Rajasthan was invaded continuously for centuries from outsiders and it was only after Shah Jahan came to rule India, that he made permanent peace with the Rajputs. Now every time, a fort was invaded in Rajasthan (and they almost, always lost every battle), whatever history they had documented invariably got destroyed. Hence, the history of Rajasthan is a mix of fiction and fact.

Take for example the fact that Padmavati was a princess from the Singhal Kingdom, the present day Sri Lanka. Now in those days, Hindu's would never cross water, it was considered very inauspicious. In fact, this mindset was prevalent well into the 20th century too. Sri Lanka is an Island and to reach the princess, Ratan Singh would have had to cross the Sea. No way, would an orthodox Hindu King every do that. Also, the logistical impossibility of travelling all the way from Rajasthan to Sri Lanka seems improbable in the 13th century. The Afghans, Mongols and the Turks were nomadic in nature and hence they could travel for months, but not the Rajputs, who never stepped out of Rajasthan.

It was only when Jayasi published his Padmaavat, that the mention of Queen Padmavati comes to light. A poet named Narayanchandra Suri had written a very similar story two hundred years before Jayasi which became the base for Padmaavat. Jayasi's patron was a Rajput King and hence he made all his characters Rajputs, probably in order to please him. Hence, if you look at it from Jayasi's point of view, Padmavati was a completely fictional character. He as much as declares in the poem that he has imagined all the characters for his poem.

Amir Kusro was a legendary historian who accompanied Khiji when he set out to attack Chittor and has documented the siege of Chittor and the capture of the Rana. He doesn't mention Padmavati's name anywhere and or do any other historians during that period. Kusro doesn't even name Ratan Singh as the ruler of Chittor, and just refers to him as Rai in his chronicles. There is no mention of Jauhar also anywhere, though Kusro does write about Khilji ordering his soldiers to massacre around 30,000 Hindu men when they conquered Chittor.

There are four type of ideal women described in Hindu scriptures and Padmini is supposed to be the best among them, and this is most probably why Jayasi names the heroine of his poem as Padmini or Padmavati. Uptill Jayasi's Padmaavat, there is no mention of the Queen.

So, I suppose what happened was that people started mixing up fact and fiction and as the story kept passing down generation after generation, the legend of Padmavati was born. Khiji and Ratan Singh are historical figures where as Padmini is not. But it all got mixed up, thanks to Jayasi.

The hype of movie and the mind boggling numbers are real. My sister who is a huge fan has been trying to grab tickets for this film and for the first time even with more screens for a Hindi film she can't get tickets for my entire family for this coming week. Thats how crazy the hype is for this film here in my country. This hardly happens here unless it's Aamir's film. Now I believe the film will be ATBB. Congrats to Sasha-Veer the happiest for these two.

Shahid Kapoor's latest outing as Maharawal
Ratan Singh in Padmaavat was thoroughly
loved by everyone. He starred along with
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, who
played the roles of Rani Padmavati and
Sultan Alauddin Khilji respectively.
A lot has been spoken about the film being
more focussed on Khilji and when a leading
daily asked Shahid about the same, he spoke
about why he agreed to be a part of
Padmaavat. Shahid stated, "On a personal
level, it was a huge risk for me. Everyone I
know told me not to do the film. They said,
It already has Ranveer and Deepika, so why
do you want to be the third spoke in the
wheel?' Honestly, even I believed that in the
beginning. I thought to myself, it must be a
guest appearance. Why would Bhansali sir
suddenly think about it two months after
the other star cast was announced? But I'm
such a huge lover of his work that I had to
meet him to try and understand what was
going on. He insisted on coming home."
He further spoke about this being the first
film he did after having daughter Misha
Kapoor. Shahid said, "I had just had my
daughter. And this was the first thing I was
starting after Misha's birth. It was an
important juncture in my life. Marriage, baby,
etc. I was a young father who was in his
first year-and-a-half of his marriage. You get
the picture, right? Udta Punjab and Haider
had worked, Shandaar had not. So, it was a
time of transit. It was this time when I had
one foot in success and the other in failure.
And I was trying to find out how I was
going to move forward. When Sanjay sir
came, he just looked at me and told me
what was the role. He asked me, Why do
you think that the negative character is the
only character that matters? Even the
positive character can be good.'"
Shahid added, "He assured me that I would
be happy at the end of the experience and I
said, Yes' to the project. I didn't even read
the script. I wanted to work with him on the
basis of that trust. However, 10 days before
filming, he told me, If you don't read the
script, I won't start the shoot because
tomorrow I don't want you to say, this is not
the way I thought it would be'. I read the
script and realised why he chose me and
not a newcomer. I understood he wanted a
recognised face of a certain value to play
this role."
When asked about the love story between
Deepika and him, Kapoor said, "People have
seen Ranveer and Deepika together in two
of Sanjay sir's earlier films Goliyon Ki
Raasleela: Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani.
They liked them in both, but in Padmaavat,
there is a strong love story between
Maharawal Ratan Singh (me) and his queen
Rani Padmavati (Deepika). The characters of
Ranveer and Deepika don't have a single
shot together."
He concluded by saying, "Also, there is a lot
of drama between all the three characters.
There is drama between Khilji and Ratan
Singh and between him and Padmavati. That
needed to work. Sanjay sir has offered me a
good part. And those who have seen the
film have understood why I did this role."
