#Padmaavat is watched. @deepikapadukone @shahidkapoor give a noteworthy performance but the film totally belongs to @RanveerOfficial. He captures the madness and ecstasy of a monster with an ease that can't be rivalled by many.

.@filmpadmaavat | @RanveerOfficial as #Khilji is like a beast - bold & bad, with his lust for Rani Padmavati. He has prepared so well, that he proves that only he fits & could have done this role. #RanveerAsKhilji has delivered one of his best performances ever. LOVED IT

Padmaavat movie review: It's pretty and partly absorbing but not quite exhilarating

This Bhansali magnum opus is the kind of film that tries too hard to get your attention in the runtime of almost three hours.
'Padmaavat' is based on the epic poem Padmavat written by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi.

Rating:

Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Cast: Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Jim Sarbh, Raza Murad, and Anupriya Goenka.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat' is the most ambitious film to emerge from Bollywood's stable in quite a while. It is based on the legend of Rani Padmavati, a legendary Hindu Rajput queen, mentioned in 'Padmavat,' an Awadhi language epic poem written by Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540.

I seldom feel this way about a Bollywood film, but sitting in my seat watching 'Padmaavat', I felt privileged as a moviegoer. Privileged that such a film has been made about Rajput pride, and privileged that it has been made in our times that only glorifies the Rajputs. But unfortunately, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali fails to give us a compelling cinematic experience which does not rely only on visual appeal of the film.

'Padmaavat' is essentially a love story between Padmavati (Deepika Padukone), a very beautiful princess of Singhal and Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor), the King of Mewar. Their love at first sight quickly results into the King's second marriage. Meanwhile, a power obsessed Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), the Turko-Afghan ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, hears about mesmerising beauty of Rani Padmavati, who ultimately calls for a war on Chittor to capture her. The subsequent events form the rest of the narrative.

'Padmaavat' is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. It is also the first Indian film to be released in IMAX 3D.Padmaavat is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made. It is also the first Indian film to be released in IMAX 3D.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali makes his most courageous film yet, but sadly the results are not very impressive. The film that is a war epic, love story, and costume drama, all in one, is bogged down by mediocre execution. Much will be said about the film's daunting length, and the truth is, it could have been shorter. It's the kind of film that tries too hard to get your attention in the run-time of almost three hours. However, the second half of the film does get little pacy and you are swept into Rani Padmavati's political tactics and her personal growing-up journey. The idea of Sati/Jauhar seems a bit jarred in today's times, especially when the entire film builds to that one high moment.

Deepika Padukone performs adequately. She looks ethereal - a compliment that she has heard many times before, especially in Bhansali's last two movies. Here, she has minimum dialogues to deliver, and she lets her expressive eyes do the talking and that only works in her favour. Shahid Kapoor gives an earnest performance; it is a very controlled performance from his part and he owns literally every scene he is in. Also, Deepika and Shahid's chemistry is ravishing. They sizzle in every scene they are in together. Ranveer Singh as the menacing Khilji is effective in parts, but overall, his egomaniacal act is too loud. 'Padmaavat' is certainly not his best work, but it offers ample evidence of his growth.

The supporting cast has done a fine job - especially Jim Sarbh and Aditi Rao Hydari. A slight regret is that Sarbh should have had a stronger personality for his background, but his character does not impact the movie in any way. Hydari manages to leave a mark in her limited appearance.

This film has a fine production design, costumes and camera work. It's the technical finesse on display which makes you realise how much hard work Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his team of technicians has put in making this film to look exquisite. But even Sudeep Chatterjee's stellar cinematography that carries on all the way through fails to compensate for run-of-the-mill storytelling and conceptual inconsistency. There is no ferocity of war, no anguish or post traumatic stress. Also, the sub-plot of Maharawal's first wife (played nicely by Anupriya Goenka) gets conveniently mend towards the climax, which is baffling.

Music by Sanjay Bhansali is good enough, but the songs appear a redo of his previous work. While Ghoomar','Ek Dil Ek Jaan' are visually appealing, Ranveer's futile dance number Khalbali' reminds you of Bajirao Mastani's Malhari'.

The makers should know that quality trumps quality when it comes to special effects. The clunky CGI in the film is pretty awful and distracting. The inconsequential 3D effects and a glossy crowd-wowing star spectacle make Padmaavat' look like pure product which manipulates the audience to love it. But the fact is, it lacks the real depth and hence the high of watching a good piece of cinema.

PADMAAVAT WINS ITS TRIAL BY FIRE

PADMAAVAT STORY: Rani Padmavati ( Deepika Padukone) - the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh ( Shahid Kapoor), is known for her beauty and valour in 13th century India. She captures the fancy of the reigning Sultan of Delhi, the tyrant Alauddin Khilji ( Ranveer Singh), who becomes obsessed with her and goes to great lengths to fulfill his greed.

PADMAAVAT REVIEW: Based on a Sufi poem of the same name written in 1540 by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, Sanjay Leela Bhansali has added his own flair and interpretation to 'Padmaavat', giving it a fairy-tale sheen. This makes all the controversy pointless, and pale in comparison to the spectacle that unfolds. Bhansali reunites with two of his favourite leads in recent times - Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, but adds Shahid Kapoor to complete this trio of commendable acting talent.

Shahid is steadfast and unflappable as Maharawal Ratan Singh - the ruler of Mewar, brimming with Rajput pride. He brings a regal aura to the character that warrants him winning the confidence and loyalty of the Mewar kingdom and more importantly, Rani Padmavati's heart. Deepika is radiant as the Rajput Queen whose beauty, brains and valour moves the entire plot along once Alauddin Khilji becomes obsessed with her. Padmavati's allure beyond the superficial is prominent post-interval, when her character comes to life and she gets to showcase her acting range. Alauddin Khilji sees Ranveer as an unhinged, barbaric Sultan, who is consumed with a ravenous libido for power and flesh. He unleashes an animal magnetism on screen with a scarred face, kohl-lined eyes and a greased torso. The scenes between him and Shahid are some of the most engrossing, as both flex their acting muscles at opposite ends of the moral spectrum. Besides them, Aditi Rao Hydari stands her ground as the naive Mehrunissa who gets a rude awakening when she discovers her husband Alauddin's true nature. Jim Sarbh is somewhat misplaced as the Sultan's slave-general, unable to generate enough menace to overshadow his master's own. Nonetheless, the ensemble moves well in tune with Bhansali's vision of this larger-than-life retelling.

The director's expertise in heightening opulence and grandeur is well-known, further distinguishable in 3D. Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee compliments him by beautifully capturing some jaw-dropping scenery. However, the effects in the action/ war scenes don't meet the expectations raised by a film of this scale. Also, the songs don't do much to further the narrative other than providing visual delight. Granted, it could do with a tauter screenplay and shorter run-time but 'Padmaavat' is an entertaining, large canvas experience, brought to life with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's stroke of visual brilliance.

Padmaavat Movie Review: Ranveer-Deepika-Shahid have NAILED it!

Finally! The most controversial movie is here...

After a huge hue and cry and innumerable controversies, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus, "Padmaavat" is here! And trust me this long wait has been worth it.

When we talk about a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, the first thing that crosses our mind is, the huge and colorful sets, and that's what "Padmaavat" is all about! A "Perfect Visual Treat".

After a long time, a colorful film with an average entertainment quotient has come up and trust me, after watching a number of dull movies in 2017, this periodic drama has surely come as a relief giving a great start to out 2018 movie calendar!

After reading this, your curiosity level to know about "How the three lead actors performed?" So without wasting much time, lets see what our three musketeers has to offer us in the film!

About the characters:

Sultan Alauddin Khilji played by Ranveer Singh:

Ranveer Singh who is seen playing Sultan Alauddin Khilji has over powered everyone. With such perfection he has justified the wickedness of his character. When he introduced his character to the world he labelled him as a "Monster" and trust me he truly is one in the film.

When RS was shooting for Bajirao Mastani, he had revealed that he tries his best to get into the skin of his character and this time he has succeeded in doing so.

Out of all the 3, it is his entry that captivated your senses. He has been successful in developing the feeling of hatred for his character in the minds of the audiences'.

Deepika Padukone has flawlessly lived up to her character of Rani Padmavati. Her grace, her elegance, her intelligence, her beauty, has been just out of the world. Her eyes speak a thousand unsaid words and with movies and years, Dippy has only flourished.

Maharawal Ratan Singh played by Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor who is Maharawal Ratan Singh in the film has come as a surprise package. He has proved it when it comes to transforming himself completely, he can nail it.

After all, with all due respect, Shahid deserves to take good amount of praises to his name after his kick-ass performance.

What we liked/ disliked:

As for the 3D effects, initially they are a bit distracting, but over a period of time, with the mesmerizing camerawork, the viewing experience is smoothened. But the animations lack finesse, especially in the scene with the ostrich.

As always, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's films rank high with its music and back-ground score. This one is no different. The dances and the action sequences are well-choreographed. The songs integrate seamlessly into the narrative. But it is the songs, "Khali bali ho gaya hai dila" and "Ghoomar," that stand out.

Overall:

The whole film rested on the shoulders of visuals, visuals and visuals and that's what makes it a must watch this weekend.

So, grab a huge tub of popcorn (I know it will be very expensive, but then you need it as a distraction) as the film walks at a snails pace or has been abruptly edited.

The song where he is dancing with his generals reminds you of Malhari and one will find it hard to believe that Khilji really shook a leg like this!
😕
Why am I not surprised. I had one meek hope that at least this time slb won't show an evil king dancing.

Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) who lives by the Rajput code of ethics. How do we know? Because he keeps repeating them throughout the film. Needless to say that Rajput' is most oft-used word in the 163-minute film.
😆 Of course
