Movie Review: Padmaavat

  • BOLLYWOOD HUNGAMA NEWS NETWORK

Rating 4.5

Something I wrote about BAJIRAO MASTANI holds true for PADMAAVAT as well... "It's a pre-requisite to possess a mega budget, have exhaustive knowledge of the subject matter, possess nerves of steel to handle the gigantic cast/crew and last but not the least, the vision and fortitude to bring a historical to life on celluloid in today's times. You can face instant rejection from the paying public or face controversies and protests for deviating from facts. The film-maker has to walk a tight rope.
PADMAAVAT everyone's aware has made it to the front page of newspapers and on prime time news on national television. It's the most talked-about, voraciously discussed and hotly debated film of our times. The mileage it received nationwide and internationally has only enhanced the curiosity. Everyone's curious to watch, examine, evaluate and scrutinize PADMAAVAT. The stakes are high and so are the expectations.
The moviegoer in me is enthralled by historicals and mythologicals. I've vivid memories of the classics helmed by the doyens and stalwarts of Indian cinema, such as Sohrab Modi, K Asif and Kamaal Amrohi. Ramanand Sagar's RAMAYAN and BR Chopra's MAHABHARAT on television were much revered, while Ashutosh Gowariker's JODHAA AKBAR and SS Rajamouli's BAAHUBALI [1 and 2] reignited my love for period films.
I am no historian to comment on how authentic PADMAAVAT is, but as a cinematic experience, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's latest endeavour left me mesmerized. Let's come to the point right away: PADMAAVAT is a spectacular looking period film that matches international standards. And it's not merely a stunning looking film, it's well structured too: The love story, the simmering tension, the conflict that ensues, the dramatic altercations, the battle sequences and the nail-biting finale... PADMAAVAT brings the past vividly to life.
Final word? PADMAAVAT is not just body beautiful. It has soul too. Delivers solid drama with a terrific climax. It won't be erroneous to state that PADMAAVAT is Bhansali's most accomplished movie to date.
When you think of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the first thing that crosses your mind are the exquisite frames and gorgeous visuals [recall HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM, DEVDAS, GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA and BAJIRAO MASTANI]. Having said that, the celebrated storyteller has mastered the art of striking the right balance between form and content. PADMAAVAT will not only be talked about the compelling visuals, but taut screenwriting and right pacing as well.
PADMAAVAT is a reaffirmation that Bhansali is capable of accomplishing incredible results if he refrains from getting overindulgent. In the past, the supremely talented storyteller had squandered off the opportunity [SAAWARIYA and GUZAARISH]... not this time. The screenplay is focused; it piqued my interest and kept me involved in the narrative, while the characters are well-etched and powerfully portrayed. In fact, the watertight screenplay, which encompasses drama, action and romance, are beautifully juxtaposed in the narrative. In short, everything blends beautifully like a symphony.
Besides captivating screenwriting, PADMAAVAT is bolstered by strong performances. It doesn't take a crystal ball to foretell that not only will Deepika's act dominate the award season next year, but she will also win tremendous love and adulation for her portrayal. She is the lifeline, the strength of PADMAAVAT. It's easily her career-best act, eclipsing her earlier works so far.
This is Ranveer's third movie with Bhansali. Although the actor has delivered sparkling performances in the two collaborations with Bhansali [GOLIYON KI RAASLEELA RAM-LEELA and BAJIRAO MASTANI], you've got to watch him as the treacherous, vicious, vindictive and villainous Khilji in PADMAAVAT. Actually, Ranveer doesn't just play Khilji; he inhabits him. It's an astounding, gutsy performance that will be talked-about and discussed for sure.
Shahid is tremendous and his act gives depth and feeling to the character. He captures the essence of his part wonderfully, while the camera captures every emotion that flickers across his face. I'd also like to add that the Shahid-Deepika chemistry appears natural and striking.
PADMAAVAT has a noteworthy supporting cast. Jim Sarbh is creepily effective and owns every sequence he's in. Aayam Mehta is fantastic. Ujjwal Chopra is first-rate. Aditi Rao Hydari is unforgettable. Anupriya Goenka doesnt get much scope. Raza Murad is excellent.
One cannot ignore the compositions/soundtrack in a Bhansali film. His music, like the images brought to the screen, should've added depth to the emotions of the characters, but is strictly okay this time. In fact, that's the only hiccup here. The review would be incomplete without a mention of the battle sequences. The volatile, high-octane finale is a visual spectacle. The camerawork is splendid: gorgeous and artistic. The production design is top notch. Dialogue are well worded and garnish the sequences beautifully.
One more thing: The Hindi film industry has badly used and abused 3D, turning it into a gimmicky tool, but Bhansali is one of those rare storytellers who knows how to utilize the technology to his advantage and how it can enhance the overall theatrical experience. Having watched PADMAAVATon IMAX 3D, I can only state that the results were simply stunning.
On the whole, PADMAAVAT is a remarkable motion picture experience that's backed by proficient direction, spellbinding screenwriting and superlative acting. For Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it's the best title on an impressive filmography. A sure-shot winner at the box-office!

Just in 15 minutes of film, you will develop hatred for Ranveer Singh's character. That's where he wins! Alauddin Khilji steals the thunder whenever he's on the screen. He is as hideous as an evil conqueror should be.

To say that Alauddin Khilji is Ranveer singh's finest performance won't be an overstatement.

Jim Sarbh as the right hand of Alauddin Khilji nails it every time he's on the screen. Bhansali surely has his hands on picking the star cast.

We have to admit, the background score of Padmaavat has already won millions of hearts. Really heart touching. Ranveer Singh as Alauddin Khilji makes an impressive entry with his dramatics. Not that we didn't expect! Deepika Padukone bowls us over with her regal avatar. Truly, mesmerizing.

Kohl in his eyes, valour in his heart, that's Maharawal Ratan Singh for you. Shahid Kapoor is explosive as the never-bending Chittor prince. The film shrieks about the valour of Rajput dynasty in every frame. Shahid Kapoor does justice to his character.

The VFX will take you back to the glorious history of Chittor. Splendid!

Anupriya Goenka misses the bull's eye. Her screen presence fails to create an impact.

Padmaavat Review LIVE Updates: Ranveer Singh is scariest of your nightmare

Will Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmaavat shatter the box-office records of all time?

Written by: Reshu Manglik, New Delhi [ Updated: January 23, 2018 20:09 IST ]
Padmaavat LIVE Review: Will Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor-starrer impress the audience?Photo:YOUTUBE

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmaavat will be out in theatres on January 24th. Yes, you heard it right. Special IMAX 3D and 3D shows will be premiered at selected cinemas of some cities one day prior to its release. The film has courted controversies right from the word go. Fringe groups of India like Shri Rajput Karni Sena are staging protests against the film for projecting their revered Rajput queen Rani Padmavati in bad light. Citing the outrage and protests, the film was deferred from its official release date of December 1. After a long tussle, the Deepika Padukone-starrer is releasing on January 25th, officially. 6 Indian states including Rajasthan banned the release of Padmaavat in their states, but Supreme Court lifted all the bans and restricted all the states from passing such diktats. In a recent development, SC rejected the plea to ban the film and issued an order to screen Padmaavat in all states. Now after the apex court rejecting the pleas to ban the film, all the Indian states are obligated to follow the orders.

Our film critic Reshu Manglik is watching the film right now.

To catch the LIVE review of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat, follow the space below:

Padmaavat Movie Review Quicker: Ranveer Singh's Wickedness VS Deepika Padukone's Beauty

It's beauty vs dark throughout the first half & you can never root for any one of them.

January 23, 2018

Sanjay Leela Bhansali starts Padmaavat on a dark & beautiful note. Ranveer Singh roars his presence from the first scene when he enters with an Ostrich. In no mood of lightening up Khilji's track, Bhansali jumps to explore the romantic angle of Rani Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) and Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor).

It's beauty vs dark throughout the first half & you can never root for any one of them. Khilji is so bad that at some point of time you start feeling for him just because of Ranveer's astounding acting. Deepika is so beautiful, there's no scene you'd like to take your eyes off her. Shahid Kapoor's voice echoes when he's on screen.

Padmaavat Movie Review Quicker: Ranveer Singh's Wickedness VS Deepika Padukone's Beauty

You'll drop your jaw post Ghoomar on big screen; the choreography and Deepika's presence is a treat to soul. Subtly hinting at Khilji's bisexual shade, Bhansali tackles both the tracks with equal grandiose.

"Ek jung husn ke naam! that's the umbrella under which first half takes place. Karni Sena has made me extremely sad, because throughout I was trying to find what's objectionable wasting a part of my brain and I found nothing. A request: please watch it in IMAX 3D. When Bhansali said, it's meant for IMAX watching he meant it.

Trending

Padmaavat is as grand as it can get! By far Bhansali's most brave attempt to portray a story. Getting aided by performers like Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor, this film is going down in the list of most beautiful movies ever made in the history of Indian cinema.

Stick to this space for full review! By far I'm gasping from the epic feeling of watching Padmaavat finally. Just half way to the film, I'm sure Ranveer Singh has his name written on all those glittery trophies this year.

DNA Movie Review: Padmaavat is an enriching cinematic experience

Padmaavat

Written By

Tuesday 23 January 2018 20:28 IST

Critics Rating: 4/5

Cast: Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor

Direction: Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Duration: 2 hours, 43 minutes

Language: Hindi (U/A)

Story: Alaudin Khilji (Ranveer), the face of evil from the Khalji dynasty is power-drunk and fond of all things exquisite (nayaab). When he hears that the Chittor Queen Rani Padmavati is breathtakingly beautiful he wants to 'possess' her. So, he wages war on her husband Maharwal Ratan Singh. Thus, begins one man's battle for honour and the other's battle for love.

Review: As far as history goes, I'm a novice on the actual chapter involving Rani Padmavati. So, pardon my ignorance. I therefore fail to understand the fringe group threats to this film. Honestly, there is nothing objectionable or unIndian in it.

Having said that as far as cinema goes, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is easily the best auteur-filmmaker in Bollywood. When he tells you a story, you listen, you applaud, you soak it in, you bask in its luminescence.

Padmaavat, is a work of fiction (as per the disclaimer) and it is based on 16th century Sufi poet, Malik Muhammad Jayasi's epic poem Padmavat. And once you come to terms with that, you just let yourself soak in the whole experience. Frankly, it's a harmless piece of cinema that doesn't dent anyone's honour.

In fact, the dialogue written by Bhansali and Prakash Kapadia speaks of Rajasthan's pride and valour. And, it showcases the bravery of the Rajputs by weaving it in a simple love-story between a king and his queen, who are forcibly drawn into a vortex of hatred and war because of the unreasonable quest of one man-Alaudin Khilji.

Every frame here is spectacular and opulent. And if you experience this film in 3-D, you are bound to enjoy it more.

The extreme nature of the three lead characters make them alluring. Khilji, is darker than the night, Ratan Singh is self-righteous and attractive. As for the queen herself, Padmavati is the epitome of grace and beauty. At the same time, she is feisty, and this makes her irresistible to both men and women.

This is also a love story with a difference because throughout Khilji never actually sets eyes on Padmavati, the object of his fantasy. And yet, Bhansali masterfully conveys so much madness and mayhem.

If you are a fan of the Bahubali format of story-telling Padmaavat will blow your mind. Everything here speaks of grandeur and greatness. Ranveer, from whose point of view, the story unfolds compels you to stay invested in him throughout. You are meant to hate him, but you are found guilty because you come out loving him. Shahid is understated and adds weight to the role of the royal. As for Deepika, well as of today, she is the queen of Indian cinema. And, here she stands tall, speaking eloquently with her eyes and breathing fire when necessary.

Fortunately, there is yet another disclaimer saying that the film does not propagate the custom of sati. That having been made clear, the jauhar scene in the film is a highlight. And it leaves you teary-eyed.

Tip: Padmaavat is definitely worth a watch, for its scale, story-telling and stellar performances from the lead.

PADMAAVAT: Tamil Movie Review

PADMAAVAT: Tamil Movie Review

Direction & screenplay: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Story: Prakash Kapadia, Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Producers: Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Sudhanshu Vats, Ajit Andhare
Production company: Bhansali Productions, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures
Music director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Background score: Sanchit Balhara
Cinematographer: Sudeep Chatterjee
Editor: Jayant Jadhar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Akiv Ali
Language: Tamil (dubbed version)
Release date: 25-01-2018
Censor certificate: UA
Run time: 2hrs, 43mins
Genre: War, Action, Drama

PLOT:-

Set in 1303 AD, film shows the honor and valor of the Rajputs & its people, war happened between them and the Khiljis.

PROS:-

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has picked up a stunning script and presented a tribute to the Rajputs. Additional script work by Prakash Kapadia drives the film positively. His paper work is nothing but solid substance and quality in planned film making. SLB's direction is completely amusing and it is clearly proven by his own style of showcasing things. His screenplay has so much detailing and covers up lot of in-depth moments. Deepika Padukone glitters in every single frame as the queen with self-respect, her character stuff peaks towards the end. Ranveer Singh is deadly as the evil King of the Khiljis, he has got his characterization for lifetime and his performance is outstanding. His expressions conveys his cunning nature in each and every shot he appears. Shahid Kapoor is fit as a bold and honest King, his acting enlightens the seriousness of his role. Aditi Rao Hydari does well in the limited space given to her as an innocent princess. Large scale Script demands a huge budget, money has been usefully spent knowing the mentioned fact. SLB's music knowledge marches a step ahead in this movie as the songs are on a superb level. Sanchit Balhara's background score is top-notch and has taken the value of the film to a different league. Sudeep Chatterjee's camera work is just epic, he offers a visual extravaganza. Blending with him, the VFX team has worked with utmost passion which exhilarates the viewing experience. Stunts are solid & one-on-one sword fight before the finish between Ranveer and Shahid is a craze to watch. Sound effects also uplifts the tension during the crucial portions. Art department's work is absolutely astonishing and the amount of huge rich sets the film carries is countless. Costumes adds more value to the realistic checkbox. Madhan Karky has written the Tamil dialogues, kudos to him for putting good concentration to it as the dubbed version has actually come out efficiently. The evil-minded Alauddin Khilji is shown as the real him with lot of guts. The generous thoughts of the Rajputs will surely make its people feel proud about their historical achievements. Editors have made justice to this tough product without showing any form of glitch. The side artists have also grabbed quite importance and have done a fine job. Every sub-plot is justified with a proper conclusion. There are plenty of surprising elements which comes along the flow and leaves out the excitement. The face-off sequences of Ranveer and Shahid pulls the limelight towards it. The beauty of the film is that it is damn realistic and engages neatly at the same time. Climax is wonderful and an heart-touching historical moment to remember for a long time.

CONS:-

The travel takes its own sweet time to proceed as the sub-plots evolve a lot in the first hour. Deepika Padukone's role takes the soft side till the break-point which gives a feel that she has only less importance in the script until that stage. The length of the film is definitely a shortcoming as at end of the day, the long watch feel it gives is hard to hide. Also the progression is quite slow till the center stage of the script arrives. The lead characters get established in the start itself, but making it flow through repeatedly wastes some ample time. The restriction in the budget is clearly evident by few expensive war portions left over without showing correctly. Songs falls a bit due to some inappropriate lyrics. Also being the Tamil dubbed version, the impact is somewhat low in certain areas as the lip-sync is obviously missed. Editors could've planned and reduced quite a few scene's length or at least one or two songs as the placement of some songs are not great. 3D effect is average and honestly the 2D version will make no big difference to watch.

TO CONCLUDE:-

A great piece of art which tells about the valor and honor of the Rajputs through SLB's beautiful vision. Go for it!

Movie Rating 3.25/ 5.
