TUNNA TUNNA 👏

I agree with this one.

1. Besides the obvious ones mentioned, I think it's the star culture which deters the quality of stories on a lot of occasions. So much importance is placed on the star, their image, catering to fan's expectations etc at times that most get stuck in a rut and story ends up taking a backseat.

2. Heroes getting to decide the cast- The actor should not get to take the call on who should be part of the film. It should be the call of the director and the casting team depending on the demands of the role and the story. I hate how heroes here get to take the ultimate call on casting.
3. Most of them are grossly overpaid. And the promotions are getting incredibly annoying. Patch up break up hook up divorce reconciliation one night stand cat fight controversial statement- how exactly is this supposed to help a film and it's performance. Not to mention the over promotion. If only they focussed on the story rather than controversies and sick promotions we would get better films.
4. There needs to be more importance and respect given to writers. Not everything is about the stars and the director. And yeah, start writing more diverse roles for older actors, make mature stories which dont just cast the 30 plus heroines as the male leads sister or mother.

Will add more later 😆

All these things are absolutely true...I hesitate to continue and probably shouldn't but I've just come back from vacation so optimistic 😆 . You know chicken or the egg thing, does BW make crap because the audience pays to see it, or does the audience pay to see crap because BW makes it...and when I look at high net earners of recent years I have to say the audience is part of the problem too. Until a critical mass of people are willing to pay to see films in theatres they might need to think about and won't get to dance during I don't think much is going to change. I am NOT at all saying filmmakers are not responsible for the crap they make and I fully believe all the things RR posted are problems (except I don't think their messy personal lives are for promotions, I think they just have messy personal lives).

In HW everything is unionized/guilded. Writers, cast and crew are more protected and respected because they band together and are therefore stronger. It sounds like in BW everybody's on their own. So much might change if writers and non star actors were respected. Stories would be better. Stars might learn how to be actors and that the film is more important than their vanity van.

ALSO, lack of good lyrics in songs IMO... these days, from whatever extent I can grasp, telugu lyricists are penning down such creative lyrics... I always wonder, what happened to BW lyricists..

Seems like a pseudo-intellectual has written this answer.
Don't know about the South industry, but Hollywood makes a ton of mediocre movies every year filled with stereotypes and sexism. Americans also love to see a Thor Ragnarok over Dunkirk, so there is no need to insult the Indian audience.

But some of it makes sense. Bollywood really needs to make some original music, instead of copying songs from other industries and remixing old Bollywood classics. Yeah, it's true that the songs become chartbusters, being played at every function and party. But it is only for few days. A new remake comes and people forget the old one. The quality of music has really gone down from the last decade. We need better singers and songwriters in Bollywood. Arijit Singh, who is probably the best singer at present, shouldn't be singing in every other movie. Even if audience wants a party song with energetic dance numbers and half-naked girls, it still should have a soul and not be all about glitz and glamour.

Even for movies, Bollywood should stop making so many remakes every year. I know audience loves brainless movies, but you can make an "original brain-less" movie, instead of making a remake or rip-off. And of course we need better writers for that.

Even if plagiarism is an easy way out to earn profit, but by copying and stealing stuff, Bollywood is not going to get any respect around the globe.

Other than that, nepotism exists in Bollywood, Hollywood or any other wood, and no one can do anything about it, unless people become complete saints to not think about their children before any random person.

As for mediocrity, the real problem is that Bollywood is primarily a star driven Industry. Well, it's a problem for me and other minority of neutrals. But India is filled with fans and fanatics, who watch a movie only because of their favorite star. This mentality of star-worship might be coming from religion. Is it right or wrong, we are no one to decide, but this star-worshipping mentality stops Bollywood from experimenting. Scripts are mediocre because star is always bigger than the movie. But if the majority wants it, then there is nothing wrong in making such movies. And Vishal Bharadwaj and Anurag Kashyap make movies with substance, because well, they are good at that stuff, and not because they care about cinema or anything. They also can't make a brainless entertaining flick like Rohit Shetty.

Yes, sexism is a problem. But the problem is not in the movies, the problem is in the audience. People are sexist, racist and superficial and it reflects in their choices. This is not a problem of Bollywood or Hollywood, it is a problem with the society as a whole. Movies will show what people like to watch. Bollywood is not doing any social service here. They will sell what people want to buy. It's just like tobacco companies, people know that smoking kills, yet they still buy cigarettes. Companies sell it because it brings them profit. Same with Bollywood. One can of course raise their voice against such things, but blame the buyer, not the supplier.
