Compared to the sister Hollywood industry, Bollywood (and other regional Indian movie industries) has always been mediocre when it comes to the output. While we may beat them in terms of the annual output quantity, there is a long way to go if we want to catch up in terms of quality.
Our scripts are lazy. We as an audience reward mediocrity by routinely going for movies based only on the star-cast. Our acting community is filled with talentless, over-privileged twats whose families have cornered the movie market for decades. We routinely and unabashedly plagiarize scripts and songs from all over the world. Our most "prestigious popular movie awards are all a huge circle-jerk. We speak out against objectification of women, and yet play the latest hot item number at every party. There is no transparency in the process for casting actors, with actually talented (albeit "outsiders) being sidelined to make way for the latest "star son/daughter.
Think of it.
Of the latest generation of actors, how many have truly studied it? Or practiced theater? Who are the most sought after young actors currently? Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha,Alia? With the exception of the last name or few, none of them can act to save their lives.
Who are some of the most popular composers and musicians of all time? RD Burman, Jatin Lalit, Laxmikant Pyarelal, Nadeem Shravan, Pritam, Anu Malik, AR Rahman? Again, with the exception of the final one, all of them have enjoyed the fruits of someone else's labor.
See the List of highest-grossing Indian films.
3 movies starring SRK, 4 movies starring Aamir, 5 starring Salman, 2 starring Hrithik, 1 starring Rajnikanth. The only exception being Baahubali.
And of these 15, only Dangal, 3 Idiots and Baahubali deserve the rewards they reaped. PK was a mediocre version of OMG. Bajirao was a decent attempt, but nothing stellar. Dhoom 3, PRDP, Dilwale, Kick, HNY, Bang Bang were utter horse manure.
If this is the kind of movies that make moolah, why should a Vishal Bhardwaj or an Anurag Kashyap invest into one with substance? Why slog hard to make good, original music when no one cares if you rip-off an Asian artist, or an African one? Why focus on honing one's acting skills when all you need to land a movie role is a pretty, manicured face and a good, toned body?
Why?
Unless there is a reaffirming answer to the above questions, this industry will continue to churn out dull, uninspiring romantic flicks, prep them up with the same, formulaic songs, and the coming generations of the Kapoors, and the Khans, and the Roshans will keep laughing at the naivety of us Indian movie-goers, while stroking each others' egos on Koffee with Karan.
