Shahid Kapoor: Hope Audience Gets Rawal Ratan Singh

Posted By: Absolute India 0 CommentAlauddin Khilji, BJP, Bollywood, cinema, Deepika Padukone, Gladiator, Hindu groups, news, Padmavati, Rajput queen, Rani Padmavati, Ranveer Singh, Rawal Ratan Singh, Russell Crowe, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Shahid Kapoor, statement, Udta Punjab

Actor Shahid Kapoor, one of the three lead actors of controversial film "Padmavati, hopes the audience understands his part as Rawal Ratan Singh. He feels it's a character that would make people want to be "better in today's time.

The actor stressed on the need for inspiring characters while discussing his role as Rani Padmavati's husband and a warrior king Rawal Ratan Singh in "Padmavati with GQ India for December 2017 issue, a statement said.

"I remember when Gladiator' came out and Russell Crowe played Maximus, the character felt too good to be true. But it inspired me so much. That was a strong reference for me because I wondered how you play a character who is so noble and good, and make him connect with people today, Shahid said.

"Sometimes cinema has the power to make us aspire to be something better. Of course, there's a lot of value in playing something that's real; I'm coming from Udta Punjab', where I played a coked-out, crazy pop star not at all the kind of guy you would want to be, not even the kind of guy you would want to be in a room with.

"With him, I wondered how to get people to understand someone so off-the-hook, this free radical jumping all over the place. But people got him. I hope they get Rawal Ratan Singh as well. He's extremely powerful, but always steady in all kinds of high-pressure situations.

"I've always admired people who can do that. We're living in a time where we need to be inspired by characters who make us want to be better, because there's a lot happening in the world.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's attempt to bring alive the story of Rani Padmavati on the silver screen with his movie "Padmavati hasn't gone down well with Hindu groups backed by the BJP. It also features Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in pivotal roles.

"Padmavati is being slammed for alleged distortion of historical facts about the Rajput queen. The film was scheduled to release on December 1, but it was deferred.

Shahid also spoke about how Ratan Singh protects his wife from invader Alauddin Khilji, essayed by Ranveer.

He said: "The most difficult part was that he is the least known among the three characters. There are several gaps in our knowledge, and it was up to me to fill them appropriately. It was important to understand what type of king I was playing we've had great kings, we've had terrible kings, we've had blunderers, kings who've become saints.

"Ratan Singh was a warrior king who falls in love with this exceptionally beautiful woman. They get married and are very happy together when another man (Alauddin Khilji) enters the picture. It's a story about a husband and wife, but also a king and a queen.

'The walk inside Qutub complex takes people through the ideologies of rulers from medieval Indian history'
Soumi, who conducts walks for Delhi Walks, says, "Alauddin Khilji is a prominent figure from medieval history. Our walk in the Qutub Complex not only covers his tomb but also reiterates why there is a stark contrast between his tomb and Iltutmish's tomb. So first, we take them to Khilji's tomb, then to Iltutmish's to explain the contrast. It is a part of our narrative. The walk inside the Qutub complex takes people through the ideologies of various rulers from medieval Indian history, and throws light on the architecture and the socio-cultural impact of their policies."

It seems January will also go Padmavati-free and as per the date coming in, the movie will release in February. As per a report published in Box Office India, Padmavati will release on 9th February.

Why this release date is concrete is because as per the exhibition sources numerous distributors in overseas have sent chains of cinemas in US/Canada a schedule which states 9th February as the release date of the film.

HC on Padmavati: Do you want a situation where people can't voice their opinion?

Rosy Sequeira| TNN | Updated: Dec 8, 2017, 08:59 IST

HIGHLIGHTS

  • While pointing out that threats are being issued openly, the judges said people are taking pride in announcing rewards for killing artistes and performers.
  • The court's remarks were made while it rapped CBI & state CID for their failure to trace the absconding killers of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare.

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday asked where the country was headed while alluding to "open threats" made to stall the release of the film Padmavati+ and the announcement of a reward to "kill" its lead actress Deepika Padukone.

"In which other country do you see threats made to artistes and performers? It is distressing to know a person makes a feature film and several others work tirelessly towards it but are unable to release the film for public viewing because of continuous threats... A feature film cannot be released in this country. What have we come to?" asked a bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and Bharati Dangre.

While pointing out that threats are being issued openly and shown on television, the judges said people are taking pride in announcing rewards for killing artistes and performers. "Today somebody says, 'I will give a reward if you get a performer, artiste, actress killed'... Even chief ministers are saying they will not allow release of the film in their states," said Justice Dharmadhikari, adding, "This is censorship of a different kind. If this is happening to people with financial strength and backing, what about poor people?"

The court's remarks were made while it rapped CBI and state CID for their failure to trace the absconding killers of rationalists Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare despite being given time to crack the cases.

The judges said those who "openly and boldly" voice their opinion are being targeted by "people who won't like their opinion" and threatened with elimination by fringe groups. "That is what is disturbing us. We have been noticing that at the core of all these crimes is the bold attempt being made by fringe groups to attack those who voice their rational thoughts, feelings and expressions," they added.

Hyderabad: A recent study reflects that the controversy over the film Padmavati' is driven by caste considerations led by caste groups. The study by Chrome Data Analytics was conducted in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, among adult respondents. The study focussed on freedom of expression. So how many people are interested in watching Padmavati' the film after all the acrimony over it? Research found that 81 per cent of the respondents in the metros plan to watch the movie despite the controversies surrounding it.

The survey seeks to analyse public insight around the controversy, their views and if artistic freedom should be bereft of religious sentiments. The sample-size constituted 53 per cent of women and 47 per cent men. About 29 per cent of the people said that film makers should not think about religious sentiments or cultural sensitivity while making a movie. However, 71 per cent respondents felt freedom of expression should be respectful of religious sentiments.

The film was initially scheduled for release on December 1, but that has now been voluntarily deferred by the producers. Director of the film Sanjay Leela Bhansali is again planning to postpone the release date for multiple reasons. Amidst of all the controversies, BJP MLA from Goshamahal, T Raja Singh, had even requested Telangana CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao to ban the screening of the film till the film-maker makes changes protestors have asked for. States of Rajasthan, MP and UP have already imposed a ban on the film.

In a letter to Mr Rao, Mr Singh said the film hurts the sentiments of Hindus by manipulating history of Rani Padmavati. MLA Raja Singh said, "Rani Padmavatiji was from the Rajput community, and Rajputs treat her as a goddess and respect her immensely. On the other side of the divide, Diana Monteiro, director and counseling psychologist at Hyderabad Academy of Psychology says, "Everyone must get to express themselves and films aren't real life. We must realise that before we get offended by films.
