Padmavati and The Interview

I mean the Seth Rogen and James Franco movie 'The Interview' here. Every time the controversy over Padmavati stirs up, I am reminded over and over again of the film 'The Interview'.
If you recollect this was circa 2014 during the Sony hacks. North Korea had threatened violence if the film received a theatrical release. Sony canceled the international theatrical release and decided to go for a streaming release instead. However, amidst criticism of bowing to terrorism, Sony did a limited theatrical release of the film.

Despite being a mediocre film the film managed to recoup costs without a theatrical release. It also sparked international debate on freedom of speech and how to handle threats of violence against media. Even though the film poked fun at a living leader of a nation, it was agreed upon that media should not be censored based on personal sentiment.

The Padmavati controversy brings up a similar debate. Unlike 'The Interview' which was intentionally created to mock Kim Jong Ill, Padmavati is a film intended to honor Queen Padmavati of Chittor and her resistance to Allaudin Khilji. Unlike 'The Interview' which targeted a living leader, Padmavati is historical fantasy fiction about a legendary queen from centuries ago who may or may not have existed. Most of Padmavati's legend is based entirely on fiction. Yet the film is mired in controversy with various parties claiming to be offended and threatening violence against the film's release.

SLB has already postponed the release bowing to threats? Was he right in doing so or is he bowing to terrorism?

Should he go "The Interview" route? He could limited release the film in countries, states, and cities open to showing the film? Could he also do a streaming release in India through streaming partners? Especially if the streaming partner is based abroad with no physical offices in India.

When "The Interview" was threatened, international law enforcement took it seriously and committed to finding and punishing any potential threats. Why hasn't similar action been taken in India? Shouldn't anyone openly calling for beheading or any form of violence be arrested for inciting conflict and unrest?

SLB spends exorbitant amounts of money to make his films. I doubt he will cancel release. Eventually he will do something to at least break even.

But this is perfect publicity. Initially my desire to see Padmavati was meh. Now its like, I must see this. I want this to succeed just to rub it in the karni sena's face even though I do not care for SLB and didnt care for Ram Leela or Bajirao Mastani.

I'm of the same opinion, didn't care about the film until these medieval minded savages started threatening people and behaving violently, preventing everyone else from watching it because of their blind faith in their personal santa claus.
Just release it online, and everywhere else, would love to see these idiots burn in their own rage.

More or less a similar situation. But I don't think indian films can manage without indian theatrical release.

First they played 'procedure procedure'. Now 'ban ban'.
The recent stunt by Nitish comes AFTER SC pulled the CMs up for their reckless statements and the proposed ban as against the rule of the law. The officials holding responsible positions are playing with the sentiments of the people using religion-card and trying to appease the protestors. It's amusing how all the bans have come into force with clauses and conditions 'till issues get resolved/sorted' etc.

It's unbelievably stupid that these elected heads of government are opposing the film over ALLEGED distortion of facts and objectionable scenes. SC is repeatedly squashing the petitions to stall the release of the film citing that censor board is yet to certify the movie. Yet some intellectuals are filing one PIL after another.

It is evident that fringe are into it for publicity; showing them as warriors and ruling parties support them for political, electoral gains. No one really cares for history or culture least of all queen padmini 😆.

I wonder what the karni thugs will do after padmavathi releases and completes its run at box office. Sad, they will again sink into oblivion.

Yes, at first I was just eager to watch the film.
Now many like me are determined to watch 😆 just to rub it in their faces.

Intentionally postponing beyond 12/1 doesn't make sense as then it would clash with Last Jedi. If so bad move by SLB.
On the other hand, all foreign news sources are reporting on Padmavati fiasco too. Karni sena has made SLB's Padmavati more famous than the Padmavati they are defending.

Based on the trailer released, the movie totally appeared to be a glorification of Rajputs. So I was baffled at the karni sena nitpicking and threatening violence. Interesting tactic on part of the karni sena if it is true.

TBH though, even if they claim glory later - I think they lost a lot of respect. Karni sena's behavior has completely undone any glory for Rajputs. Maybe the historical ones will get the glory. The karni sena will always be immortalized as a bunch of dumbf**ks.

I don't think, any such thing will happen. I suppose after the election, Padmavati will be released as planned before. But can it get 8000 screens? I am not sure. Also the fact that TZH releasing soon (unless that also gets postponed due to CFBI) will be another concern. More than this, I don't think there will be any difference in its collection.

I do not understand, how people seem to be knowing everything before watching the movie (as if they got the knowledge, sitting under banyan tree). They are the modern Buddhas.

What if the movie does not turn out as they had predicted? What if the film has shown Padmini, Ratan in all glory and Khilji as a tyrant and a clown? Will it become masterpiece for those who are agitating against it? Will the most movie become insensitive for the group, who are fighting for artistic freedom now? What will both groups do, if the tables are turned around? That is the question eating my head. Anyway, I will wait with the popcorn.

Agree with most of the OP .. However , speaking for myself, I have lost whatever little interest I had in this movie , all thanks to the insanity on display by the idiotic sena .. This movie , as is apparent from the trailer , is an out-n-out glorification of the Rajputs whose honor these morons claim to be protecting .. Right now , anything Rajput is a big turn off for me , let alone support a movie which glorifies their so called legendary history .. This movie has turned out to be such a double edged sword for anti-Karni sena people like me coz if the movie does well , the sena wins as it glorifies them , if the movie fares poorly , the sena wins again .. I can't bear to sit through 2-3 hrs of Rajput glorification to support "freedom of expression" .. Sorry , no can't do ..

You have a good point here. They probably do not give a damn about what I or anyone else thinks. Just like Trump doesn't give a damn about what people think.

I was operating under the assumption that any social/political/cultural movement aims to gain widespread approval outside the in-group.

LGBTQ people already support same-sex marriage, adoption, trans rights etc. The goal of LGBTQ organizations is to get politicians and the general public to embrace these rights and implement policy to protect them.

Rajputs already have a lot of self-pride and respect. I assumed that Karni sena would want to have the general public feel the same sense of pride and respect towards Rajputs.

But recent evidence globally has shown that some groups don't care about public approval - they just want to preach to the choir!

Just popping in to say to the OP his/her posts are a joy to read.

P.S. I watched The Interview for the same reason. I will probably watch PV, too, in spite of having left the movie hall with a terrible headache after the loud and long Devdas.
