Parvathy is an acclaimed and award-winning actress down South. Were you familiar with her work?
Yes. When I met for the first time, she reminded me that we had met before and what I had done. I was invited for a South film awards function in Dubai as a presenter. As she was on stage to collect her award, her nose ring fell and came rolling towards my feet. She didn't want anyone to notice it. But I picked it up and gave it back to her thinking "Lagalo, achchi lagegi." She was embarrassed with that moment. I didn't know I had done wrong until she pointed it out. We laughed over the incident. She plays a girl who could never think of going on a date, and I am someone who is poles apart from her character.
You recently finished shooting a film with Dulquer Salmaan, another Kerala-born actor and rising star of South cinema. How was it working with him on Karwaan?
He is very charming. His head and heart are in the right place. I am so happy with his casting in Karwaan [ a film directed by Akarsh Khurana and co-starring Mithila Palkar]. I knew nothing about him before the shooting began. We met straight on the sets. It was very smooth and pleasant shooting with him. I used to detest doing commercial cinema with multiple cast members. There is this tension 'Kaun limelight leke jaayega?' It's the worst feeling for an actor. You are not concentrating on the drama and the situation and you are bothered who will get more limelight. That's why I have refused many movies. It's not an enjoyable environment to work in. I am not in any kind of race to tell I am better than you. Who will suffer with these games? I want to work for a long time in cinema and if the atmosphere is such then how will I work?
Your film with Iranian actress Golshifteh Farahani The Song of Scorpions is doing the international film festival round. She has done her own dialogues in the film.
It's very brave of her. A lot of hard work on her part. I saw her all the time learning her lines. She fit the part so well. Her face is a landscape. She has seen so much; t he society that she is coming from. She carries the pain of being an immigrant deep inside her. She is lovely too.
Recently someone shared with me a translation of an interview she gave to a French publication in which she shared her experience of working with me. She said: "Irrfan is like the desert. His presence soothes, and he is noble. He doesn't talk much, he laughs. He is a solitary soul. He's alone and mysterious. He's an extraordinary actor and I adore him absolutely."
And soon you will be back sharing screen space with Deepika Padukone in a Vishal Bhardwaj-written film.
I can keep doing films with her all my life. She is such a beautiful human being. It's the directorial debut of casting director Honey Trehan. I am looking forward to the experience.
