MEB if you want to be suggested products that work for your skin then join r/skincareaddiction - a lot of qualified and well informed people there.
And if you want to learn more about the DIY side of skincare (science based) then check out Making Skincare on Facebook and r/DIYBeauty on reddit. I think you might like the content that's on there. (:
I used to be one of those people who followed pinterest recipe and believed everything natural bloggers said but when I started venturing out a little I realised that the natural skincare community is mostly filled with people who like to do fear mongering and/or have their own "natural" skincare line and want people to buy from them.
Instead the science side of DIY it's freaking amazing. I learned a great deal and can dupe v v expensive products to the T. For example, the Farsali oils that are all over cost just 3 to make at home (including cute packaging) while they're sold for $50. Also, you get the chance to customise the products to your own liking. I'm someone who doesn't like citrus based ingredients in products that I wear during the day so making my own Farsali oils gave me the chance to omit the Lemon and Orange EOs and add other ones that my skin likes.
And I just realised that I'm ranting lol. I get carried away when talking about skincare. In short, like you said natural isn't always better and from my experience I learnt that most of the things they spread are just scare tactics.
Ex one of the most popular natural skincare brands sells their products without ANY preservative - which is v v wrong considering anything with even a little water in it needs a preservative or bacteria will grow into it.
Another example are these YouTubers who make "natural" masks with food grade items and tell people that it's safe to keep them in the fridge for a week - it's not. They're risking ruining people's skin forever just to make a few quick bucks and it makes me sick. -.-
