I wanted to make this topic before but was not sure whether I should make it or not. I seriously wonder why do we expect actresses to be drop dead hot and gorgeous? Most of the actors in bollywood are strictly average or below average looking. However, no one judge them based on how good looking they are. Its mostly acting and their screen presence which is fair enough.
The rules change for actress. Even if she is decent looking, act well, and has strong presence, we still act harsh. For example, Kriti Sanon is just four films old but she can act if given chance, has good screen presence, and looks decent too. Still she is getting a lot of criticism. However, someone like Arjun Kapoor easily gets good projects and dont get much criticism.

In general, we expect actresses to be the best looking and have the most perfect features. Isn't that wrong, shouldn't the main criteria to judge actors should be acting and how talented they are rather than just mainly looks.

I personally find Alia, Anushka, Parineeti etc very pretty but according to many they are average looking which i find it wrong because they are amazing actresses. I would personally want to see a really good actress with decent look than a very beautiful actress who can't act

Okay he is criticized for his looks but he still manage to get good projects like Half Girlfriend, 2 states, etc etc. Lets leave Arjun kapoor but most of the actors in bollywood except Salman, Akshay, Sid, Varun are not conventionally good looking but they still are doing well. Not that, I am against that because I know they are doing well because of their talent and strong screen presence. However, its not same with an actress. Typically, people judge actresses based on their looks. Now, i am glad that its changing but still people tend to be more harsh toward actresses than actors.

Anushka and Parineeti are average looking to you? Wow! Definitely different strokes for different folks. Contrary to popular opinion, I find Alia quite good looking too. She looked stunning in Humpty and Badri.
Also, To answer you question, Have you ever seen a how Indian society works? Ladka jaisa marzi ho, ladki sabko sundar chahiye. Same is the case with Bollywood. Imo, most men in bollywood are good looking and well groomed given how Papz are constantly around so they have to.

IDK, but the standard of beauty on this forum is TOO HIGH, I don't understand what people find beautiful or if there's anything at all that they find beautiful or even 'good'??

Also, sometimes I wonder why "average" looking people are not considered beautiful? Like...

"Oh, she/he looks like any average girl/boy in Delhi/Mumbai, no one would even look twice at her/him" 😕

What's wrong with average yaar... I keep staring at all sorts of people when I go out.. people are beautiful, and people with attractive features more beautiful.. we humans are beautiful creations!

Okay, I don't want to sound cheesy and sermonising but seriously, the standard of beauty is TOOO HIGH here and among some of my acquaintances too. People deemed unfit for BW because they look 'average' is shocking..

Beauty is in the eye of beholder. I personally find Anushka and Alia really pretty. Even Parineeti looks beautiful. However, many people in this forum and outside world have very high standards of beauty set for actress. Its like they should have perfect figure+white skin+perfect features etc which I personally feel is wrong.

I agree why do people always have to be so much picky about looks. Like I dont get it. Every person out here is imperfect and has flaw but that doesnt mean that they aren't beautiful. Its high time that we come out of that shell (hot body, flawless white skin, perfect features) because its wrong. Bhumi doesnt have a perfect body but I still find her attractive and like watching her onscreen.

The preoccupation with actresses' looks is ridiculous. And contrary to general opinion about most actresses being "average" in looks, most are good looking. Because Indian audience is definitely hypocritical enough to watch an average/bad looking hero, but definitely against an average or bad looking heroine. That excessive criticism of Vaani was telling in how harsh audience can be even though she acted and danced well. And I also do not get the excessive criticism of kriti, who despite being 4 films old, with flowerpot role in at-least one or two films, definitely has shown growth in BKB. Who is to say she might not keep growing and itch out an existence in bollywood? Time will tell.

I agree with you. It sucks that how the industry is so open toward below average looking actors but completely brush off even decent looking actresses. However, I think its changing. It feels so good to see Bhumi gaining accolades and being appreciated for her performance. Kriti can shine if given chance. Her role in Dilwale was flowerpot yet she shined and created a very strong impact. I never saw Heropanti. Raabta was crap film but Kriti still did a good job. I really want to see BKB and seems like she held her own despite tough competition from her co actors.

I have never seen Vaani films but she is not bad looking at all. I heard she can act too.
