Part 40

Sivagami was feeling very anxious. Something was really wrong this night. Today was supposed to be the happy day. Today, her son was supposed to be enjoying, instead her grandson and daughter escaped the death very closely. Why was everything happening around here at this time?

She had sent Prasanna to Vaidhyasaala seeing how of the late she was getting tired easily. She was required to be under constant observation and care which at this moment was not available in the royal fortress. At that moment Chandrika came there with an information. Sivagami frowned.

"Enti Chandrika?

"Bhargava is here in Maahishmati.

"What is he doing here?

"Yuvaraja Baahubali might not be the King of Maahishmati but Rani Devasena is still the queen of Kunthalam Rajamata and Bhargava is trusted aide of Kunthalam here to help their king and queen.

"After all this time, why now?

"Now is when they need every help Rajamata.

"More help than Maahishmati?

"I should not say this. But Sorry Rajamata. Maahishmati is of no help to them. You know this.

"Chandrika!

"Aravadam nizani kappettadu Rajamata. Shouting will not hide the truth.

"What are you trying to say?

"It will be better if you go the Neelaaranyam in uttara Maahishmati.

Sivagami frowned. Wasnt it the forest where MAhadeva was hiding with his Rudrasena?

"Yes Rajamata. I am asking you to meet him before he comes with his forge to attack us.

Sivagami looked thoughtful.

"Nanna Mahendra.. Why nanna? What happened to you?

Devasena kept rocking him. Suddenly Mahendra was too restless and kept crying and crying scaring her. Usually Mahendra was a very happy child. She paced around the house, went to fresh air. But he kept on holding to her and kept crying and was too cranky to be carried by anyone. Amarendra had gone to investigate the well and look into provisions to build safe wall around it. Naayaka has also gone out.

She was about to sharpen a new dagger when Mahendra had started crying.

"Amarendra!

She thought of her husband with heavy heart seeing her son cry his lungs out.

"Mahendra!

She turned happily seeing Amarendra standing there entering with Avantika and Jayawanta. She shook her head and went to him.

"Amarendra! Why did you bring them ?

"Sulochana is going to look for Naayaka. So I brought the kids here.

"You never miss a chance do you?

"Why should I Deva?

He said as he gave Jayawanta to Devasena and took Mahendra in his arms. In the small chance he got he gave Devasena a peck on the corner of her lips making her glare. But he saw the red hue spreading in the light of the twilight.

"Entandi idi?

"After Mahendra's birth also you ask this?

He said winking at her. Devasena narrowed her eyes. In lightening speed, she cornered him minding not to disturb the babies who were in their world holding their fingers. She pressed her dagger to his neck.

"Do not rile me up!

All the three kids squealed. He looked at her smirking. Shifting both the kids to single arm, he wound his other arm around her waist.

"What is the fun in that Devasena? Do you know I like to see this feisty side of yours?

She just glared at him.

"And your dagger is not sharp enough!

He said. Devasena sighed and moved away. Keeping the dagger aside, she rocked Jayawanta who was humming.

"I was about to sharp it when Mahendra started crying. He kept on crying and was beyond my control.

Amarendra looked down at Mahendra who was having his one hand around Avantika's finger while other held his yagnopavedam. He frowned.

"Emayindi Nanna? Why were you troubling amma?

He asked crooning to his son who just held more tight to the string across his torso.

"See.. he is cranky. Did not want to leave my side. Now look at him hanging to you

Devasena shook her head. She looked down at Jayawanta who held on to her mangalasutram. She frowned.

"What is wrong with the boys today? They are holding on to us like this?

Amarendra just shook his head and settled down with the kids. Devasena put down Jayawanta who happily turned to Mahendra.

"This Jayawanta! He is going to be next Naayaka!

"I say, Mahendra you are lucky

Amarendra said winking at Mahendra who kicked his legs making happy noise. Devasena shook her head as she went back to sharpening her dagger.

"Deva..Today when you fell in the water..

"I know you would be very much tensed. But did you notice? Mahendra did not even flinch. Though he became unconscious for sometime, he was not affected much by the fall or drown.

Amarendra looked down at his son who was happily playing with Jayawanta and Avantika.

"I saw Deva. I saw another thing Deva. Jayawanta kept crying until he saw Mahendra fine.

"I noticed too. Though Avantika was restless she was not crying but Jayawanta was wailing aloud until Mahendra gained conscious and wailed.

"Looks like our son is going to be around people who love him already and will safeguard him even when we are not there.

"Shh! Amarendra. Avem Maatalu?

"I am speaking facts. I have sent Naayaka to enquire about Mahadeva as you said you saw him this morning. Sulochana is for backing him up.

"Hmm. Amarendra.. If MAhadeva is getting into the country, isnt it a bad news?

"I thought of it. But so far, I don't have any such news!

"You have men around?

"Your Kunthala warriors only

"Oh ho! They have started listening to you?

Amarendra raised his brow. But then sighed seeing her raise her brow too.

"Only because it is for your benefit.

Devasena chuckled.

"They never are going to get this straight. Let me meet them.

"Shh! Deva. They are your loyals.

"And you are my husband!

"Keep reminding me that!

"What do you mean?

"Seeing you sharpening my sword and me looking after kids, gives me reverse vibes.

He said grinning. Devasena glared. Mahendra made another happy sound that was followed by Jayawanta and Avantika.

"Naughty fellows!

Devasena and Amarendra said together and laughed. The kids too squealed.

Here sulochana went in search of Naayaka and had Veera along with her. She disguised herself as a man with a hood on her head as she crossed the Kadgari Mahaaranyam and went into Neelaaranyam when she saw a few men preparing food and talking among themselves.

"Enti today from the moment Rayudu has returned from country this morning, he is in too much into thinking?

"He must have seen his family

"Why would that put him in such deep thoughts? After all, he is here to kill them right?

"And they are ready to kill him too.

"But not Rudramma's clan. It's Rudradeva's clan that is backed up to kill Rayudu.

"Who cares Maadanna? Our job is to serve who pays us. Did you mix the medicine in the food?

"I don't know what is the need. The medicine should be enough to kill him by sunrise.

"Still this is for safety Maadanna. Keeping him until sunrise could prove dangerous now. As Maharaja has ordered, get it ready.

Sulochana stood there wide eyed. She understood that Bhallaladeva has planned to kill Mahadevaraya by buying his own Rudrasena. Somehow she had to inform this to Maharaja and Naayaka. But how? Where was Naayaka?

"Bhalla!

Bhalla turned from the parapet to his father.

"What have you planned?

"You will see!

"Sivagami has gone to temple for Sandhya Kaala pooja

Bhalla smirked.

"Then its the best time.

Bijjala looked at him frowning as Bhalla gave a whistle. Bijjala heard noise and ran to one of the wall and looked at Bhalla in question. Bhalla nodded his head and Bijjala rotated one of the sword shield on the wall and the wall nearby started moving opening the secret passageway through which some assassins came in and stood in front of Bhalla.

"You know what to do?

Bhalla asked. And the Assassins nodded their heads.

"Go on!

All the assassins made his chamber into a war field and hit each other and killed each other. The last of the assassin took to Bhalla and opened up the scar his brother gave and happily died to Bhalla's sword. Bijjala stood astound.

"Bhalla! Enti ivanni?

"Yagnam! Aa Baahubali marana saasanam, naa amma chetulu tho rayadaniki Nenu prarambhinchina Yagnam! This is a Yagna I started to write the death note of Baahubali by my mother. Ee Yagna manta lo Baahubali kaali maadi masi avtu unte.. Appudu sallarutundi, Naa gundelloni Manta! When Baahubali falls prey to the fire of this Yagna, then the fire in me would cool.

Bijjala stood astound even more. But then slowly smirked. Bhalla smirked too.

"Now we wait for Amma!

"Sivagami ravali.. Ivanni Choodali..

Both father and son laughed eerily. And Bhalla scoffed not minding the blood trickling down his eyes.

Meanwhile Ajeya stood outside the fortress watching it.

Naayaka met Sulochana on the other side of Neelaaranyam.

"Did you..

"I saw Sulochana. Poor Mahadevaraya is going to fall prey for his own sins.

"But my doubt is.. Why would bhalla want him dead?

"He is clearing his side Sulochana.

"Ala kaadandi.. Bhallaladeva is person who could twist natural death to his benefit. So why use slow poison to kill his own aide?

"Hmm.. Aalochinchali..

"If my guess is right.. He is going to strike and Mahadevaraya and Rudrasena are his weapons! We should do something soon.

"You take Veera and alert Rani Devasena and Maharaja Baahubali. I will go in search of Bhargava. Go!

Sulochana knew it was not time to question and Galloped on Veera who also knew the urgency.

Devasena after feeding Mahendra waited for him sleep as the other two were already in deep slumber. She saw Amarendra in deep thoughts. She went and sat on his lap and put her arms around his neck shocking and surprising him. Amarendra's eyes widened feeling Devasena's hot breath close to his neck,

"Deva? Emayindi Deva?

"Hmm!

Was all she said. He touched her body and felt the heat.

"Devasena!

He called worried.

"Amarendra..

She called feebly worrying him more.

"Nee vollu yaga kundam la mandutondi.. You are burning.

He said as he dipped his Vastra on the nearby water pot and pressed it to her forehead. She had her eyes closed. He was about to put her on the mattress he readied for their night when Devasena protested.

"Evandi! Vadili Velloddu. Dont leave me!

She said feebly. Amarendra shook his head. Even his super strong wonder wife behaved like a kid when she had fever.

"You know right Devasena! This Amarendra until his last breath is always yours to be with you forever!

He said like saying to his son. Devasena smiled as he let her head fall on his lap and kept pressing the cold vastra. The water was taking toll her now. Last time it was him. He thought he should do something about this water soon for the sake of the villagers. That was when he heard the whistle far away.

"Deva!

Devasena snuggled more into his stomach.

"Deva.. Listen carefully!

Devasena who was feeling a little better with the cold compress looked up at him.

"I am taking you to Naayaka Sulochana hut. At least one of them will be back in sometime to take care of you.

"What happened?

"Ajeya is here Deva!

Devasena understood that it was a news from Fortress.

"I will stay here!

"No Deva! Stay in that hut. Let me help you. Soon Sulochana should be back.

At the same moment, Baadshah started trotting restlessly.

"Vaddandi.. I will stay here. Sulochana can come here. If I have to go there, you have to disturb the kids too. It will not do good for you if they start getting cranky.

Shaking his head he came out and saw Paartheeba and Ajeya standing there. He looked at them shocked.

"Paartheeba?

"Its bad news Maharaja. Rudrasena has surrounded Kunthalam.

Ajeya was taken aback.

"I saw some assassins get into a secret passageway.

Amarendra thought. The attack was dual sided.

Meanwhile in Neelaaranyam Sivagami adjusted her hood and gave a whistle. And as if she was expected, a person came out from tree behind.

"Enti sivagami. Saw the truth?

"Mahadeva! What game are you playing?

"I am not playing Sivagami. Ranadeva Bhoopati started it. I am just trying to end things.

"By provoking my one son against the other? By trying to kill me by calling me in name of your father? Who is already dead?

"Ahh! You have done your homework. Ever cautious eh Sivagami? But where did all this go when your own husband was the one provoking your one son against the other?

Sivagami moved back.

"Shocked? Or never wanted to face the truth? Truth always glares at you! You are the one who closed your eyes to it just like your father did all those years ago.

"Don't!

"Trying to silence me will not silence the truth!

"Mahadeva!

"Aravaku! Listen to me! Today is your last chance to save your family and your Mahonnathamayina Maahishmati samrajyam! If you can. Do it! You are the epitome of justice after all

He said as he coughed hard. Suddenly Mahadeva widened his eyes.

"He proved for what he is!

"What are you talking about?

"You see this?

He showed his blood soaked fingers that were on his nostril sometime back.

"Guru ginjala choornam!

"The same that was given to your father once.. The same you gave to Ranadeva Bhoopati!

"Who could..

"Nee muddhu Bidda Sivagami.. Who else.. Ne..

Before he could complete his sentence, an arrow went through his throat arresting his speech and subsequently his breath. Sivagami turned around and saw Bhargava galloping away very fast.

She looked at dead Mahadeva and closed his eyes.

"Parameswara!

She chanted once and rushed back to palace only to see her son sitting in his chamber with his blood trickling over his eyes.

"Bhalla!

She rushed to tend to his would only to be stopped by her husband.

"Ippudu gurtukochinda Mamakaram? Look at your son paying for your sin of petting a snake. He has now started showing his fangs.

"Entandi meeru anedi!

"This..

He showed around the chamber which looked a tornado passed through it.

"Is what your Muddhu Bidda, pempudu koduku has done. He rebelled once, you let him, he rebelled again still you let him go free. He even attacked Bhalla in full court and you did not take it seriously. Now he has sent his men to kill our son, the king. And you still ask WHAT?

Bijjala erupted while Bhalla sat there looking at the drama unfolding.

"Now tell me Sivagami. You still think Baahubali should be spared?

"Baahubali.. Punishing him.. Will lead to in boundary feud. No one will believe.

Sivagami was in a trance. Bijjala waited.

"Everyone will erupt. The Ministry cabinet will break!

"So.. You will spare him?

Bijjala asked fuelling her more.

"If Baahubali is guilty, HE WILL DIE! JUSTICE WILL BE SERVED!

Sivagami's last statement was almost a bellow by which Bijjala was literally taken aback. Bhalla smirked. His job was done. He stood up and walked slowly.

"What are you saying amma? You still think he is not guilty?

"Justice is not done on hearing one side stories!

Saying Sivagami walked away with her head held high confusing her husband and son. But they were unaware of the confusion going on inside her as she summoned Kattappa.

Amarendra was pacing in front of his hut when Bharagava came there in lightening speed. He dismounted his horse and ran to Amarendra.

"Emayindi Bhargava?

"Someone killed Rudrasena head Mahadevaraya. He was already slow poisoned. He was talking to Rajamata when his own people killed him.

Amarendra who expected something else was taken aback. The danger he thought and planned for stood in front of him magnified to infinity. Maahishmati and Kunthalam were in grave danger than he thought. He rushed inside and saw Devasena trying to get up.

He knelt down beside her holding her head to his chest while shielding his sword.

"Deva!

"Emayindandi?

"Maahishmati is in danger. I have to go!

She held his sword and looked up into his eyes.

"I cant even help you.

"You need to rest Deva! And I need you to stay safe along with kids!

"Kshemanga velli randi

She said and Amarendra kissed her forehead once and stood up. He looked at Avantika and Jaywanta once. Jayawanta was already up and was scrunching his face. He tried to take both the kids. Devasena understood what he was doing.

"Leave Jayawanta Amarendra. He will only create ruckus. With Mahendra he will be quiet. Avantika is sleeping and she will not wake up easily. Give her to Paartheeba. I heard him. He is outside right?

Amarendra sighed once and went out with Avantika.

"Paartheeba. Take her to the hideout. Naayaka knows where to find them if at all there is some danger here. Now rush through the secret way before anyone finds you with the kid. Ajeya! You go to fortress and see to the dangers. Bhargava. You come with me to Neelaaranyam.

Amarendra commanded so soon and got onto a very restless Baadshah. Ajeya mounted on his horse and galloped towards Maahishmati palace. Devasena sat there looking at the kids and sighing.

"Enti Bhalla! Your mother..

"She has come down to this. Soon she will do what we desired for too!

"How

"You will see!

"What are you planning Bhalla?

"Just wait Nana!

He said as he walked to the parapet and looked down at the village. He smirked.
