I watched the morning show today with my friend (who hates musicals bdw). I had already prepared her for what's coming so she kept her expectations to an all time low, just watching the movie to give me company. This will be a detailed review with spoilers in grey text.

As per member reviews, I had expected the first 20 minutes to be unbearable but it wasn't at all. Maybe because I was already prepared for it? The songs weren't shoved down your throat just to justify the genre. They were there for a purpose so I actually enjoyed it. For someone who doesn't usually like musicals, the initial 10-15 minutes will require patience. When I asked my friend what she thought of it, she said she did find the first 10 minutes weird but after that she got used to it and really liked the music.

The first half was fabulous. Saying it is fabulous is an understatement really. I have never seen anything so pure and new in a Bollywood Film. I am not going to talk about the cinematography here as everybody knows it is top notch but the way the story was told, the way the music was incorporated into the scenes was really commendable. The hall I was sitting in was 80% full. It was a 10 am show. The two shows after that were houseful though. The audience laughed a lot in the first half, and that too quite loudly. I really don't think people are being fair comparing this to Barfi. They both are so different. Barfi wasn't a risk. It had a very simple story but what made it so memorable was how the story was told. On the other hand, everything about Jagga Jasoos is a risk. My friend was wondering how the hell did these people have the gumption to make such a movie. She was thanking me at the end for forcing her to come with me as she had no intention of watching it otherwise. Galti se Mistake was a treat to the eyes on the big screen. Ranbir was so fabulous in it. My friend and I enjoy detective stories a lot so we absolutely loved the two cases in the first half. They were well shot, well written, well executed and of course, the music was placed perfectly. My favourite part was the "Gussa Ho" part. The audience was going mad laughing in that particular scene.

Spoilers Ahead...
Some of the scenes were so funny. The most memorable one was the policeman deciding which phone to pick up and by the time he gets the right one, the ringing stops 😆.
The scene on the ride with Shruti and the guy who was giving her information received a lot of laughs from the crowd as well. Katrina was pretty good in that scene.

Coming to the second half, it could have been better. The length didn't bother me but oo many things were happening too quickly, especially towards the end and because most of it was narrated through a song and our brains tune out during a Bollywood song, I had to pay extra attention to those scenes. I think Basu could have slowed down the narration a bit in one or two scenes (spoiler-> where the illegal arms trading and Bagchi's backstory was being shown) for the audience to wrap their heads around it. Another negative I noticed was that there were one or two scenes that I found a bit illogical (how when the bad cop asked his policemen to shoot Jagga and Shruti started singing and the policemen started enjoying it EDITED: Somebody informed me that she was actually saying that she will marry all of them and my cinema hall didn't show me any subtitles so I am taking this back and will therefore increase my rating as well, and then the scene where jagga was flying a plane). But considering it is marketed as a kid's movie, I didn't think much of it. Having said that, in no way am I saying the second half was bad. It was superb but because the first half was extremely good, the second half's 10% dip was noticeable.
Ranbir-Katrina chemistry was the cutest thing. Jagga and Shruti were adorable together. But the heart and the soul of this movie is Ranbir Kapoor. I lost all interest in him after watching disasters like ADHM, Roy and Besharam. But I have fallen in love with him again after watching the movie. You want to pinch Jagga's cheeks and hug him if possible right from the first scene he appears in. 😆 Or maybe, that is just me.
Coming to the ending, I thought they ended it a bit abruptly(SPOILER -> talking about the illegal arms trading stuff here not the father-son reunion which was so good <3 ) but the surprise at the end was mind blowing. I WANT THAT SEQUEL NOWWW. 😭

Regarding performances, I like both Ranbir and Katrina, but I am not a blind fan of either.Starting with Katrina, I am not going to lie, she was weak in the first 20 minutes of the movie when she was narrating Jagga's story to the children. Bits and pieces of her dialogues were dubbed by someone else so that distracted me a bit. But after that, she was pretty good. These are the kind of roles that Katrina can shine in and her limitations don't show up much. She needs to improve her dialogue delivery but I think the main problem is the accent which she can do nothing about. She was the reason for a lot of laughs in the movie so she did her part very well.
I don't want to say anything about Ranbir's performance because anything I say will not justify the amount of talent and ability this guy has shown in the movie. My heart went out to jagga when he was crying, so damn heart touching. Ranbir was fab in them. All I can say is, I have become his fan.

I can understand how some people in the general public may not like this film as it is not everyone's cup of tea. But I really don't understand how these high profile critics like Komal Nahta, Rajeev masand and Taran Adarsh trashed this film. They wouldn't have if they were a genuine movie lover and wanted Bollywood to become better. It is really a shame.
It will be a bigger shame if Jagga Jasoos doesn't do well at the box office because this film deserves so much more than that. It is a brave and sincere attempt at bringing something absolutely new to Bollywood and if it doesn't do well nobody else will ever take that risk and Bollywood, which is already going downhill, will stay there for a long time to come. All you have to do is stop reading so many reviews that cloud your judgement, go with an open mind and enjoy the movie yourself because I want that sequel dude.

I'll give this 4 stars.

EDITED TO ADD:
Somebody informed me that in the song katrina was singing to the policemen she was actually telling them that she'll marry all of them if they drop their guns and my cinema hall didn't have any subtitles.
So I am going to increase the rating to 4.5/5 :D

*Edited typos.

JJ is a well made movie... After coming out of the theatres I felt as if I had watched an Aamir Khan film. That's saying a lot. The crowd that was in the theatre... I see such crowd only for Aamir's films. So many families with little kids. I was with my nephew and cousins too who are under the age of 6! (It requires alot of patience to take them)

Now coming to the film... It was amazing...an experience...we all were a part of Jagga's mission..not just Shruti. I didn't realise there are 29 songs in the film. It felt as if they were just dialogues. So the music didn't bother me...infact it amused my cousin..who's actually trying to talk like Jagga now 😆 . The determination and intelligence of Jagga is enviable. Though Jagga looked too old to be among that age group of kids in the hostel. Maybe they could've had those kids from a higher age group...but it's really not a problem..just an observation. Shruti 😆 Damn if that character wouldn't have been in the film...it would've been very dull. Her goof-ups...clumsiness..is hilarious yet endearing. Her backstory with Akash was revealed well...if only Basu focused on doing the same thing with Bagchi's backstory!
My nephew loved all the animals in the film...and actually shouted when they were riding the Ostrich's back.
If you've loved APKGK...then this one should not be missed. It took me back to those days and made me root for Jagga...as I did for Prem. Another thing each and every frame was beautiful. One thing I noticed was that the technique that Jagga uses with the pumpkin...the way he throws them at those cars...reminded me of Baahubali...as I saw that trick there.

One complaint I'll have is... This film had the potential to be a superhit...if only they could've controlled the budget! I understand that the fim required lots of efforts and time... 4 years is not that... If it wasn't constantly delayed...the budget would've been under control.

As for performances... I don't particularly notice such things... I just like the film and everyone in it.

Edit : grammatical errors

My full review :

Story is nothing special or breathtaking . But the screenplay and treatment is something i really liked. I want a Jagga Jasoos comics now. Really loved the the detective Storyline of the movie. I don't want to spoil the movie for people who have not watched the movie but the similarity between Shruti and Ranbir's Tuti-phuti was such a sweet thing. The way how Jagga links Shurti with Baghji, and how similar they are with there Bad Lucky thing😆.
Those little bits where Katrina just like his father fell down while crossing railing or carelessly drop water while pouring in class.

I also liked how they switched between the classroom where Katrina was telling the stories to the live action.

The musical thing is something I really liked, the Khana Khake, Daru Pike Chalegaye sequence is awesome. Also that scene where Tuti-phuti teaches Jagga how to speak by singing is love.
Also the scenes where Jagga solves the mystery of first murder is a very well exploited musical scene.

Plus the movie is humorous throughout, Katrina's slapstick is one of the important highlights of the movie.

I know an unpopular opinion but the music was not upto the level of Barfi. Although I didn't had much expectations, so it didn't bothered me. Don't get me wrong songs were good, Galti se Mistake is my ringtone currently but they are missing some thing special like Chenna Mereya had or Sawaali Si Raat had.
But dialogue sequences where really looking cool, I mean the blend of nusic with dialogue was smooth.

cinematography is one of the greatest I have seen in BW. It was so beautifully crafted, spectacular visual treat. If don't watch the movie on screen, you will never get to appreciate the beauty of it. The way they took one scene to other scene, those present to past sequences were such beautifully made, you don't need 3D to feel like you are going in there with the characters.

Performances were good to really good. Ranbir is surely the finest we have from the young generation and he has again shown today. His portrayal of stammering is really subtle.
I really liked how Sanaya adapted to the accent of tribals from Manipur, which tribal I didn't got hint of.
The person who played Ranbir's dad is an awesome actor, although the movie didn't got to exploit his talents fully, but he was brilliant in whatever he did.

Saurabh Sukla, the post master, other characters did well. Nothing special to take about.

finally my love did a commendable job❤️. I am feeling like a proud dad whose child always fails, passed today. Katrina was not irreplaceable or flawless, but she was really good, and the slapstick aura which her character had suited her very well. Plus mano ya na mano, nobody overshadows Katrina's screen presence, not even Ranbir who generally nakes people forget about who shared the scenes in that particular scene.

Edit: The child actor who played Jagga was as good as Ranbir, if not better. He was really good with fhe body language.

Eift

I am an asshole, so yes there were few negatives too IMO:

First, Ranbir was no means looked like a school boy.

Secondly why someone else dubbed Katrina even when she was speaking, W*F.

Third, for a detective movie, the movie was not really thrilling. It was predictable and lacked the Jasoos feel.

Last but not the least, second half was bit flat and could have tested people's patience.

Also maybe I am nitpicking but I wanted Nawaz interacting with Jaggo stammering 😆

Overall this is a fun movie which maybe not appeal some section of audience. And it is not just Indians, there are many people who don't like musicals. But for people who liked this type of movie will enjoy this one.

8 stars out of 10 from me.

One of the best movies of Ranbir Kapoor IMO. I liked it more than Barfee and wake up Sid. I was initially skeptical whether I should watch this one as I am not too fond of Ranbir. But I am glad I watched. This is one of its kind for Hindi movies. It is a visual treat as well as songs and musical narration all throughout gives it a refreshing look. If will be more popular among kids for sure. Relationship between father/son is so beautifully made. Katrina was good too, except for her introductory scene which looked more like advertisement/ promotion for toys and books. Her comical timing with Ranbir and how she reminds him of his dad is endearing. My only gripe would be its climax. On the whole movie is engaging and charming. It is a musical treat with adventure in backdrop!

Very good movie 😃

First Half is brilliant. 2nd half starts off nicely, goes down a bit in the middle, picks up before the extended climax, the climax should have been handled better. Watch out for a surprise right at the end. The ending leaves an option for a sequel. Ranbir was absolutely brilliant. His dad was even better. Katrina was also good. Overall rating of the movie is 4/5. Definitely one of the best of this year thus far

Finally got to see the movie. This is going to be long. Sorry.

Now for the actual review. I am saving Ranbir for last. But major shout out to Kat as an actress. I have always liked her more for her dancing, her hard work, more off screen Kat than on screen. I have never, ever considered her an actress, I just thought she did not have it in her. I had even written posts justifying how good a flower pot she was, how hard working she was. Well, today she proved me wrong. Kat can act and quite well. This was no Oscar performance yes, but no one can say Kat can't act again to me. I will throw this movie in their face.

I also want to give a shout out to Saswatha. I know him more as Bob Biswas. What a wonderful actor. I think I am going to watch Bengali movies for him.

I was afraid of a musical. I have problems with Hindi translation and I do not get many of the words just the context in many cases. I have to go back and watch again for dialogs like Dangal for instance. But strangely because it was a musical I understood it more easily as the pace was slower than conversation for me to process. 😳

Anurag Basu. It takes a visionary to believe in his vision, even with the budget growing, the time ticking, investors breathing down the neck. Movies are a business not a charity. But to make an omlette you have to break a few eggs as they say. I am so glad people are embracing this movie and Anurag deserves all the credit. I heard that he wanted to make a movie for kids after his daughter did not like Barfi. IMO he succeeded beyond his dreams. So many kids with parents came to my show. I think it will become a classic Indian film for kids.

Galti se Mistake is my favorite song, It was spectacular on screen. I may go again just for that song.

Finally Ranbir, what can I say. He is the finest in his generation IMO. Not my favorite but my second favorite. Ranveer is my favorite, the heart wants what it wants and all that. 😳 😆 But I have always respected his talent, hard work, dedication. I've always seen his grandfather in him. Ranbir was always that touch lesser than Raj Kapoor for me. I never could see him as Ranbir, but as Ranbir Raj Kapoor's descendant. But today I am saying Ranbir, I am pretty sure a torch has been passed. Your grandfather must finally be happy someone in his family has equal dedication and talent if not more. If they cry in heaven I am sure he must be crying happy tears. I hope your grandmother loved this movie. You are a star to me, regardless of BO. For you have what it takes. Hard work, dedication and an actor who is not afraid. Acting and movies become art because of people like you. A tapasya. Thank you.

ETA: Duh, how can I forget ? The filmography was like a painting come to life. Ravi Varma is truly an artist with the camera.
