You actually came up with a good point. I find it hard to believe that it's all a charade for publicity. This guy makes records after records without any tacky promotional tactic. This is all too unlikely that he would suddenly feel the urge to conduct a faux affair to garner publicity for star studded movie.
Either he's fallen head over heels or the theory you mentioned or both. I personally don't believe this is all a drama for PR purposes.

Reason for the affair? IF this is true, it simply has to be an emotional one. Emotions aren't guided by logic, so if Aamir is smitten by Fatima, that's a logic unto itself.
