Saif Ali Khan on 'Rangoon' failure: 'It was too clever for audience'
New Delhi :

Saif Ali Khan has finally opned up on the failure of his last release 'Rangoon' and said the movie was too clever for the audience and went over people's heads as a result of which it bombed at the box office. A Vishal Bhardwaj directorial, 'Rangoon' was a war drama with the backdrop of World War II and featured Saif Ali Khan, Kangana Ranaut and Shahid Kapoor in the lead.

Interestingly, it was Saif' second collaboration with Vishal after their 2006 release 'Omkara' which was a hit.

Talking about 'Rangoon' debacle, Saif during his interview to DNA, said "It was great reuniting with Vishal, and I think we made a good film but somewhere in the second half, we went wrong. Although, I shouldn't say this because no filmmaker does this deliberately and all decisions are taken for the betterment of the film, but a couple of great scenes of mine never made it to the film. That was disheartening but I got some good reviews, so it was not all bad. My mother called and said she liked my role. We tried to make a film that was about the Indian National Army and had Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, etc. It was a bit esoteric, and I heard one guy in the theatre said, "Arre, yeh Chinese kahan se aa gaye? (laughs). Maybe we made a film that went over people's heads. It was too clever for the audiences."

Earlier, Kangana had also shared her views on the box office failure of the movie and said it was heartbreaking.

Currently, Saif Ali Khan is busy shooting for his upcoming movie 'Chef' which is a remake of Hollywood movie of the same name and revolves around a father-son relationship.

Helmed by Raja Krishna Menon, 'Chef' will release on October 6.

A pity that Vishal compromised on the movie especially seeing how it eventually bombed. He cut some of Kangana''s scenes too.
I saw the movie and liked it but I know Vishal could have done better.

CORRECTION
It was too "boring" and "superficial" for the audience. Why cannot you accept that Vishal bhardwaj cannot make a good movie if he does not adapt a shakespear's tale ?

The movie had negative buzz because kangna got all the stage for promotions and she did nothing but behave like a psychopathic attention seeker by maligning others. A deserved disaster for the bloated egos of all the three leads, all of them are nothing without good directors, zero star power, zero mass appeal, zero capability to interest audience.

Some people who were flying high in jupiter were brought back into the earth by this disaster, karma bites people fast.

I think it was a nice money with some very good performances especially Kangana's. Vishal sucks as a music director and should've let someone else make the music, maybe that would've changed the outcome.
But nevertheless the movie was anything BUT clever.

His awesome scenes got cut too. 😆 😛 Well damn you Vishal... 2 of your actors felt cheated. 😕

Candidly... Vishal lost a golden opportunity. He had budget, actors and great technical team but came short on his screenplay/editing.

Oh well...

That's were I got to watch it. It was a nice movie overall so I don't understand why it got teared down by critics. I can understand the flop if it's not to the audience's liking but for me Rangoon isn't something the director and cast should feel ashamed about ; disappointed maybe but only because we all know Vishal could have done better had he not been after the 100cr mark.

It's definitely NOT a bad film... just disappointing due to the climax. I think people in general didn't warm up to the niche theme. Bad WOM sealed its fate.

I still regard Julia as Kangana's top performance after Queen, TWMR and Fashion. She looked gorgeous and emoted well.
