Not just of south indian cinema. Queen of indian cinema in general. The versatility she has, the amount of work she has put in and how she got so much success all by herself is incredible. And despite being so talented, she stays true to her name. Sweet, humble and a kind heart. She has so much more than what some Bollywood 'queens' think they have and show off their arrogance when really there is not much there
Devasena is one of a kind.
Problem with Bollywood heroines is that in the attempt to show them as strong characters, they're written as arrogant snobs or downright tomboys. I'm not saying tomboys are wrong or anything, but a woman can be strong and independent without being a tomboy too, and too many female leads in the North come off as Feminazis.
The South is far from perfect though. In fact, it's generally the opposite. Most of the female leads in the South are meek doormats, who play no other purpose in the storyline than to romance the hero. In all other parts of the story, they're totally useless and stand dumbly in the background while the hero does all the talking and fighting.
Either North or South, it's rare to see a female character who is truly unique, special and has an active role in the story.
Devasena is one of the only female leads who we can truly say is as important as the hero.
