Of Course Madhuri Dixit. She is the Expressions Queen, from subtle, innocent, anger, shyness, bold, seductive, every emotion she can express. If its a dance, her face acts the words along with her movements. Priyanka is good, not taking that away from her. In fact she is one of the best today. but even she cannot beat Madhuri Dixit.
Just compare the performances, on same song by Madhuri & Priyanka.

1. Madhuri Dixit Performance in 1997 Filmfare Awards: Watch from 0:48 to 2:15, on Idli doo idli doo song.

2. Priyanka's Tribute to Madhuri Dixit; same song Idli doo Idli doo. Watch from 0:00 to 1:01.

I am posting Madhuri's Yaarana Movie's two songs, to express. because I find this movie's songs had such variety, they were a small mirror to Madhuri's immense acting ability.

1. Jaane Wo Kaisa Chor Tha: Angry, broken, frustrated, revolting, drunk.

2. Jaadu Jaadu: One of most unique picturisations where Madhuri played a Live Doll throughout the song.

I will vote for PC here, but such a tough choice to make.
..Madhuri is an excellent actress, in that, her expressions, no matter what kind of expression it may be(like, that of innocence, or blushing or making funny faces, or seduction), she looks extremely graceful, it is appalling how 'neat' and graceful she is... I am not exaggerating, sometimes I feel like no one can act like that.(Barring Sridevi - seen this quality in her, but she's again a little different, not like Madhuri)

But, PC is a better actress here, considering the range of the kind of characters she has portrayed, and she has more power as an actor. And she is good in everything she does.

As I am thinking and writing this, I feel their eras were different, and Madhuri was excellent in her era, and now PC is excellent in her own 'era'.

But somehow I cannot explain more clearly why or how PC is a better actress... she just is.. lol.

I think with respect to charm, Madhuri definitely wins over PC. PC is more chameleon like, while Madhuri is just her own brand, in any given movie, she is a brand of her own, you know what she's like even before watching her... PC is not like that, but she is more fluid, sometimes surprises with her nuances or in general acting..

So, in conclusion, both in their own ways, but PC if we strictly speak about their acting careers.

As I am thinking about this, it feels like acting in those days cannot be compared to acting these days... in mainstream commercial cinema

In 'those' days, each actor had a brand of their own, the range of characters to portray and the range of acting itself was "narrow" in comparison to 'these' days. (not trying to make it sound like it's inferior, but the scope was narrow)

But in the narrow range of acting to meet the demands of the movie -- to act SO well was difficult, because giving the required expressions AND looking graceful/make an impact without looking bad is ...I doubt any actor today can do that job..

And, I guess as film direction, screenplay has evolved(again, not trying to make cinema of today sound superior) the demands from actors have also changed... as film direction and screenplay is getting more layered, more intricate, fast-paced - the 'fluidity' factor in actors is more in demand now... you needn't have the charm, and becoming a brand like 80s stars will not take any actor far these days. Rather, the actor now has to become the character, lose himself/herself in the character... and the depth you show, the nuances you can show - the better is your acting...

So, I think Madhuri was excellent in her era and PC in this era.

sorry not narrow range of acting, but I guess I'd rephrase it as "narrow range for character portrayal."

priyanka nailed pinga..not as good as madhuri in dola re dola..of course but she still did justice to the song..lets say she was 60% to what madhuri was in dola re dola..madhuri is unmatched there
but can madhuri even be 5% of jhilmil?

we don't know

coz she never bothered to experiment much

PC did or may be different era allowed her and she excelled..

so for me..it is PC..

Its easy to prove one's mettle in author backed roles under huge banners and talented directors and film-makers. But when someone stands out and is striking in even mediocre or worse movies and proves their capability, that is true talent and have seen Madhuri do it in many such movies.
Unfortunately as an actor Madhuri is very under-rated. She's one of the most natural and subtle actor with bang on expressions.

Priyanka I havent seen many of her movies, especially 7 khoon maaf, where she is praised. But have watched Barfi and wasn't impressed by her acting much in that movie.

How to judge, when Madhuri never tried? She might have potential, but Priyanka has demonstrated.
Agree with the observation, there were no experiments in mainstream Hindi films during Madhuri's time. But if she was really into acting, she could have done at least one such film in Marathi. Sridevi's great performances (when she was young), came from regional movies. Madhuri did not try that either. Even today, she does not explore (Vidya experimented. Nana Patekar doing well. PC is trying to produce a Marathi movie). Madhuri despite being Maharashrian thinks, acting in Marathi is inferior.

Its really tough as both are belong from different era. Still according to me Madhuri is bigger start when it comes to starpower but priyanka outshines in acting department. Madhuri belongs from the era when movies have run on the mill story and stereotype characters so we don't know if Madhuri would have got some unconventional character, would she able to do justice to that character. Whereas priyanka belong to the era when unconventional and women oriented movies is acknowledged to greater length and she didn't spare any chance to prove her mettle. Secondly the image of madhuri and priyanka is way different than each other. Madhuri is pleasant, graceful and girl next door personality that appeals the Indian family audience while priyanka has bold, sexy, confident and intelligent image that appeals to the urban elite class.
