Much has been said about the Special Mention Sonam received from the National Award board. Let's try to decipher what is true from what isn't shall we?
The SPECIAL MENTION AT THE NATIONAL AWARD ISN'T AN AWARD? 🤓
An award is something given to a person, a group of people, or an organization to recognize their excellence in a certain field; a certificate of excellence. Awards are often signified by trophies, titles, certificates, commemorative plaques, medals, badges, pins, or ribbons. An award may carry a monetary prize given to the recipient; for example, the Nobel Prize for contributions to society or the Pulitzer Prize for literary achievements. An award may also simply be a public acknowledgment of excellence, without any tangible token or prize of excellence.
It's the case here, Sonam's performance as Neerja was appreciated both by the critics and the audience. The late Neerja's family, colleagues and classmates were also bowled over by Sonam's impersonation of the woman they used to know.
Let's not forget that Neerja got an opening of 4.70cr on 700screens and ended collecting 75.52cr at the domestic box office on approx. 700 to 900 screens. It was a healthy growth brought on by a very positive word of mouth.
Indeed, the writing and directing were superb; so was the supportive cast's acting but let's not forget that Sonam was the main character which means that she was the one with the most screen time. Had she been horrible, the movie would have failed to deliver like Sarabjit.
I'm not attacking Aishwarya, but it's a good comparison because for both the movies, it involved a great supporting cast as well as an engaging and touching storyline based on a real-life story.
The difference is that where Aishwarya failed to deliver a decent performance, Sonam nailed it.
THE SPECIAL MENTION IS A CONSOLATION PRIZE
Since it's notoriously known that Deepika competed for Piku and since the Special Mention is a consolation prize, why didn't Deepika get one last year? Might have saved a phone...
Likewise, it's been said that Aishwarya was one of the top contenters for the NA Best Actress; yet, she leaves empty handed too.
The Special Mention is given to noteworthy performances and I don't think it requires a submission as YRF most likely didn't submit PC Jr's name for Ishaqzaade.
Wouldn't the number of people getting this distinction be greater otherwise? ⭐️
THE COVERAGE OF SONAM'S DISTINCTION OVERSHADOWED MALAYALI ACTRESS SURABHI LAKSHMI'S WIN 😕
Isn't it natural for Hindi media to highlight the winners of its region? These people are most likely to be known by their public which is the audience of Hindi movies.
Surabhi Lakshmi is surely getting the coverage she deserves by Malayali media.
