"Action thrillers" where there are no female leads , no songs , no room for a romantic storyline as such , no undertones or even overtones of patriotism , where the male lead is playing a character that happens to be half his age would indeed be termed off beat. Anyone who has watched FAN would know it ain't even your typical action thriller. The storyline is dark not just because it belongs to a "thriller" genre but because it deals with two characters that are complex to say the least. It's like saying Swades is a commercial potboiler as it belongs to the so called "patriotic genre"..lol.

dude just because it is not your typical Bollywood masala movie, does not mean it is off beat. And if the intention was to make an off beat product, sorry but the team behind the movie failed miserably.

Dude...it is as off beat as off beat gets. I won't call Dangal a typical masala movie either but was it commercial? Hell yeah! It ticked all the boxes that are popular right now. The masses flocked to the theater to watch that movie as it had a mass appeal. The script of a movie defines whether it's niche in its content or not. FAN's script had niche written all over it and it's something that even the reviewers who reviewed it have acknowledged. An action thriller is a popular genre when it has the trappings of commercial cinema within it. FAN had none of those trappings. I haven't watched Bang Bang but wouldn't that fall under the genre of action thriller. If I'm not wrong people compared it to the movie that Tom and Cameron Diaz starred in as soon as the trailer was released. Now that's commercial cinema! That's a action thriller that has all the trappings of commercial cinema within it.

A movie made in 100 crore budget and screened on over 3000 screens fillled with typical action thriller proceeding with loads of OTT actions and a typical thriller plot is not commercial?? I must be the moron of the highest order to not understand the nicheness or off beatness of FAN.
So much for being off beat. Than why the offbeat, niche product like Fan had had its lead characters who despite having common man and filming star background, go around brawling, jumping around, riding vehicles and so on as if they were some James Bond??
The thing is simple, they tried to make a Hollywood styled thriller, but failed miserably as the script and direction were not really up to the mark. Only saving grace was SRK's acting. but that too was nothing path breaking.

You do realize that the budget of the movie ended up being huge because of the VFX work that went into it. Had the VFX not been there , the budget wouldn't have been what it was at all. Hell..they delayed it too because of that reason itself as so much VFX work went into making it. They obviously released it the way they did because they wanted the movie to earn profit man. Despite having a solo release , it didn't release on as many screens as a Dangal or PK or Sultan did. That says something.

James Bond...really? 😆 It had two action scenes in it or rather two chase sequences in it. And neither of those resembled anything as slick as what you see in those Bond movies as Gaurav wasn't modeled after some James Bond kind of character and neither was Aryan. These are chase sequences but neither of the chase sequences in FAN had that machismo to them that the typical action genre movies do.

You can criticize the script but to state it's commercial cinema is darn amusing man.Bang Bang is commercial cinema. Knight and Day is commercial cinema. Both these movies belonged to the thriller genre that you seem to be focused on but they are as commercial as commercial gets. FAN ain't commercial cinema from any angle. The script defines what is niche and what isn't like I stated , the content of FAN doesn't have the trappings of commercial cinema at all.

As for Shahrukh's acting in FAN , to me it is darn path breaking. The role of Gaurav itself is path breaking and the reviews that he got for it kind of speak for themselves.

This movie releases on 3000 screens and it is not commercial? The producers spent 100 crores on its budget and it is not commercial???niche product is meant to be a product which is for limited audience. You don't release niche movies in 3000 screens. Niche movie is something like Dhobi Ghaat or an Udaan or a Raman Raghav which is released in only 600 or less screens. You don't have a niche movie screening in almost 70% of the available 4500 Hindi screens in India.

And yes the action sequences were OTT, and not something you would see in a niche, off beat product.

Anyways let's agree to disagree, so things don't sour.

Fan and Dear Zindagi were different.
I don't know why the failure of FAN is getting discussed. This topic is about SRK attempting different kind of stories.
