For starters this happens to be one of my fav childhood movies. However certain incorrect notions we grow up with only to realize later that how incorrect they were and how while growing up and watching these movies and characters we never realized that
I would watch this movie and love Rahul and Anjali

but years later watching it all over again made me question these characters who were probably one of my fav childhood characters

How shallow was Rahul? A transformed Anjali and he suddenly romantically gets involved in her who he did not even consider as existing when tina was in the picture..and what about about his 'hum ek bar jeetay hain..pyar bi ek bar hota hai' theory? All Anjali had to do was transform for him to change the theory and to start loving her which he just failed to do earlier..

but Anjali takes the brownie points in being a total ruthless character. Getting over your heartbreak..and fulfilling mom's wish of getting married by easily and conveniently deciding to marry some one who loves her unconditionally without even feeling the same for him..

calling her pyar as samjhota and saying she cannot love again..but then that is her problem..why be so inconsiderate towards the guy who loves you and depriving him of the love which he deserves..if may be not from you then don't take that place in his life and deprive him of some one else's love either..why use him so conveniently?

some how I like tina and prem (that was the name right?) more as they were sincere at least than Rahul and Anjali who i believe were extremely shallow and ruthless.

Thoughts?

Most movies of that time were regressive if you think of it now. But back then we all watched it for entertainment, enjoyed and did not think much about it.
These days critics and click baits have made people analyse every movie and character.

I think the movie revealed a lot about Karan Johar psych.

But in all honesty Rahul was always shown to be a flirt. I'm sure after Tina passed away he had a lot of other pretty feminine girls drooling at him. But he fell for Anjali because he some how always had subconscious feelings for her but didn't realize it. That's what Tina writes in the letter. She felt she came in between two hearts.

It obviously didn't come across very well. The fault lies with Kjohar and his massive failure as a director. He is good for candy floss which you like well growing up. When you rewatch as an adult you see so many misogynistic and sexist elements in the film.

Extremely shallow and ruthless? What even? 😆
I , even at his worst, will call Rahul silly. Anjali was a pretty good character! She was always in love with Rahul, all her life. But Rahul didn't reciprocate it. Yet she was an extremely important part of his life. Why do you think he named her daughter Anjali long after she was gone? Deep down, he always loved her but never realized it. For him, she was one of his guy buddies..with whom he could play basketball and do all sorts of mischief! He was a silly, typical 20+ wannabe cool dude who wanted a hot gf!
But deep down, it was Anjali who was his soulmate! This movie actually depicted a better story of unrequited love than Adhm.
And as to why, Anjali turned down Aman- because the heart wants what the heart wants! She was never in love with him...so how is that shallow? She would have been shallow, had she chosen a single , handsome Aman over a father of a 9 year old, even though she never really loved Aman! That would have been selfish.
And KKHH is misogynistic! Ahh things you learn everyday!

i didn't call anjali shallow..called her ruthless for deciding to marry aman on the basis of samjhoota..in short deciding to never give him the love in return and also depriving him of some one else's love

may be you can care to read again..

Rahul's shallow nature has been discussed and dissected in this forum many times before. So I dont think there is anything new to talk about in that regard.

As for Anjali, yes her character was problematic too now when I think of it. And it is not because she decided to marry Aman, a man who loved her but whom she didnt love. Its mainly because I think Anjali was dishonest in the relationship. Never told Aman of her love for Rahul. I think dishonesty in marriage is extremely wrong. Before marriage a couple should clearly lay out their terms and conditions and set out the rules of the relationship themselves. If Anjali had told Aman about loving Rahul and if Aman were ok with it and still agreed to marry her, then I would have had no issue.
