My Review- Just came back from Dangal and all I can say now is that it was a spell-bindingly beautiful film. Aamir Khan, take a bow. The entire cast, hats off to you all. Beautiful beautiful film. I'm just overwhelmed and awestruck by the beauty of man that is Mahavir Singh Phogat ji and his phenomenal daughters. More of my review tomorrow. Rating- 5/5👏

Neha Dhupia @NehaDhupia

The movie is over, credit roll goes on n u r sitting thr thinking there is no amount of praise or applause that wil b enough for this #Dangal

^THIS. Exactly how I felt. There was that moment when the credits were just rolling and I just stood there unable to move, just overwhelmed with what I just saw. Where time just flew and you just went along with it, relating to every single moment, laughing, shedding tears and smiling through it, feeling heartbroken, joyful, overwhelmed, happy, a myriad of emotions that this beauty of a film evokes in you from one moment to another. Nothing short of brilliant. BY FAR, one of the BEST films I have watched in the recent past and it will be etched in Bollywood's history just like Lagaan, Chak De etc for years to come. HATS OFF to the team, the cast, the crew, the director, everyone. HATS OFF to AAMIR KHAN! You are just phenomenal and that's an understatement!

My review of DANGAL: I enjoyed it immensely.😊
Its not flawless but it went where other sports movies didn't go (read: Sultan)... and what connected with me was the subplot of Geeta's arrogance leading to her fall and subsequent rise. Its these little things that make the film so relatable.

The scene in which Geeta calls Aamir up and doesn't say a word but sobs after she's lost all her international matches especially stood out... These kind of movies are never about the plot, they all have a similar template, the thing that matters is how well the plot is executed. The first half is a little slow but I found myself engaged in the 2nd half immensely.

In a nutshell: definitely recommend it 👍🏼. Aamir proves yet again, that inspite of being a superstar, he will take a back seat and let other actors and content thrive.

Dangal is truly one of the best movies of this year.

Spoiler Alert

The first half was superb. The first scene where Aamir fights with his colleague in the office with the background commentary was brilliant. It's truly one of the best scenes of the movie.

The scenes the whole village were giving Phogat advices on how to give birth to male child were funny but at the same time showed the rural people mentality of india.Such people exist not just in haryana but in every village of india.

The gals playing Geeta and Babita were also brilliant. They made the movie more interesting. The direction was also good.

Yes,Phogat did force them to become wrestlers initially but then these people are not modern educated city dwellers. This story is based on a small village and in those days in villages, the parents, specially the father would make all the decisions of his children's lives.Initially these gals were not happy with their father's decision and their problems were genuine. It's really embarrassing when the whole village makes fun of u everyday. On top of that, the daily hard work and exercises were terrible for them. The methods they used to stop their training were funny.I loved those scenes.

But later they realized that wrestling is better than child marriage and early motherhood.

The second half reminded me of Chak De India. In fact, even Aamir's role became somewhat like SRK's role in CDI.The second half was full of loopholes. So just because Phogat is the hero, his traditional methods were good and made Geeta win the Gold and the coach's modern methods failed and made her lose the matches. This is something that I didn't like in the film.

Secondly, the second half revolved more around Phogat and Geeta.Babita was sidelined and was reduced to a supporting character.

The climax was really good. There was no need for the coach to lock Phogat in a room. That was a silly scene but I am glad they didn't show Aamir showing any heroic act and break open the door. The last scene where the National Anthem music was playing and everyone were in tears gave me goosebumps. Another best scene of the movie!

Coming to performances, everyone including the child actors were good.Everyone was brilliant.

Aamir was good but I feel his acting in 3I and PK was better than this.

Sakshi was also good. This role can't be called one of the best roles of her career but still she excelled in whatever little she got to do in the movie. She was hardly there in second half.

The 4 gals playing the role of Geeta and Babita were superb.

Even Ayushman's brother was also good in the movie.

I will give it 3.5/5 rating.

It's a very good movie in spite of loopholes in the second half. However,I too agree CDI is still a better movie than Dangal.

A must watch movie for everyone!

'MESMERISINGLY VICTORIOUS CINEMA...'

December 22, 2016

'MESMERISINGLY VICTORIOUS CINEMA...'

Dangal' movie review by Divya Solgama'

Expectations:

There was a time where sport based films were considered as a jinx in our Hindi cinema. Filmmakers tried making sport based films related to Football (Hip Hip Hurray'), Athletics (Ashwini') and most importantly Cricket (All Rounder', Awwal Number' and Cricketer'). Sadly, despite of a few of them being landmark films, none of them managed to establish the sport genre in our Hindi cinema. The 90's era marked the first successful sport based Hindi film in the form of Aamir Khan starrer Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar' and established the genre by the massive success of the landmark film Lagaan'. The genre kept churning out many more successful films along with bio-pics based on the life of a sport person. Despite of Cricket being the most favourite sport of our country, the filmmakers kept venturing into different sports and managed to do proper justice too few of them. Wrestling seems to be the latest flavor for our filmmakers as we saw it being partially used in Salman Khan starrer film Sultan' and now comes Aamir Khan starrer film Dangal'. So, let's find out whether Dangal' will manage to do the right amount of justice to the sport and the real life sport personalities associated with it or might be just a sophisticated and realistic version of Sultan'.

Story:

Dangal' is a real life story based on Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), a national level champion wrestler whose only dream was to win a gold medal for India. Due to financial situations he failed to fulfill his dream but settles down with a hope of his son winning the gold for the country. Mahavir gets highly disappointed when his wife Shobha (Sakshi Tanwar) gives birth to four daughters. Mahavir gives up all his hope and locks down his dreams. One day a silver lining appears in the life of Mahavir as he discovers that his two daughters Geeta (Zaira Wasim / Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Suhani Bhatnagar / Sanya Malhotra) have all the potential of becoming wrestlers. Right from their teenage days Mahavir starts a rigorous training for Geeta and Babita and what happens next is what the entire film is all about.

Screenplay & Technical Details:

The story as we all know is inspired from the real life of wrestling champion family of Mahavir Singh Phogat, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. We also know the outcome of the story, but the important part is its brilliant screenplay and flawless narrative style. The movie is presented in a totally gripping manner with the right amount of emotions in its perfect place. Also, the humour quotient is maintained in the film, making it an ease to watch. All the great films have several fantastic moments but in case of Dangal', the entire screenplay is full of fantastic moments. There are some best of the best scenes such as Aamir's wrestling fight in his office followed by entire villagers giving advice to Aamir Khan for having a boy, Aamir's disappointment over letting away his dream, Aamir knowing the power of his elder girls followed by convincing Sakshi to allow him to coach his girls for wrestling, Aamir training his girls followed by feeding them high protein and massaging them, girls complaining to Aamir followed by getting humiliated in front of the villagers, girls plotting against Aamir and eventually understanding his importance, first wrestling fight of Zaira Wasim with young boys, Fatima's life in the academy followed by her wrestle with Aamir, Sanya's tiff with Fatima followed by Aamir's advice to Sanya, Aamir and Sanya inspiring Fatima for international matches, Aamir pledging to officials followed by his tiff with Girish Kulkarni, Aamir secretly coaching Fatima and Sanya, Fatima's first match in commonwealth games followed by the most exciting and gripping second match leading to Aamir motivating Fatima for gold and the final match which ends on a standing ovation. These are some of the best of the best scenes in the film. The dialogues are heartfelt and works perfectly as per the situation required. On the flip side the training part, especially the one with the usage of the mats was shown easily. Many of Indian wrestlers failed to achieve their success due to the transformation from wrestling in mud to mat and out here it was shown in a jiffy. Also, the finale situation of Aamir was highly dramatized without any reason. This typically Bollywood type of scene was totally out of place in this realistic film. Ignoring these micro sized points the movie is perfectly flawless. The cinematography by Setu is of top notch and does proper justice to the feel and genre of the movie. It's refreshing to see the Haryana state to be shown in such positive manner for the first time in our Hindi cinema.

Music:

The music works as an additional screenplay in the movie and songs such as Dangal', Haanikaarak Bapu', Dhaakad' and Gilehriyaan' are well placed in the movie. Naina' adds the right amount of emotions in the film. The background music is fantastic.

Direction:

Director Nitesh Tiwari deserves full marks for extracting fantabulous performances from his team. He excels in every department. He narrates the film in proper manner and makes you connect with every emotion in the film. The matches and training process are shown in highly entertaining as well as engaging manner, making you feel as a part of the screen happenings. The whole bonding of father and daughters is among the best we have seen in our films. Nitesh's name gets written in the list of great film-makers from our country and that too with non-erasable ink.

Performances:

Aamir Khan is known for many iconic performances and Dangal' ends up among the top of his performances till date. His heavy body acts as an additional importance to his character and excels in every scene. Even in a small moment Aamir delivers more than a hundred percent of his caliber. Aamir as Mahavir Singh Phogat will be remembered for decades and decades. Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar as young Geeta and Babita are adorably cute. They will leave you spell bounded by their wrestling moves. Fatima Sana Shaikh is fantastic as adult Geeta and carries some of the most important scenes on her shoulders. Her wrestling matches in the commonwealth games are a treat to watch. Sanya Malhotra as adult Babita lends great support and shines in the emotional scenes. Sakshi Tanwar's silent support in the movie is good, but wished there was some depth to her character. Aparshakti Khurrana is sweet and charming. His vocal narration is fantastic. Girish Kulkarni does full justice to his part.

Final Verdict:

On an overall basis Dangal' is a mesmerisingly victorious cinema which should be watched by every Indian, father, daughter, sport loving person and most importantly by everyone who loves and cherishes good cinema.

My thoughts;

Dangal is good, very good infact. Its the best movie of 2016, hands down. Do go see it.

I have problems with it though, suddenly it will do something that will just take you out of the otherwise gripping narrative. These things are frustrating because the rest of the screenplay is so good and does perfectly well without them. Why put them in just for four, five scenes and ruin it? Here it goes:

The story gets too melodramatic at points and overly patriotic especially towards the end. The climax has moments that are so good and then in there, so left field, you are stuck with cliches; like the whole situation between Mahavir and the coach. I don't know why they chose to do this but it just doesn't work.

The supposed bad guy in the coach is just bland, its like that caricature of a character was forced in there just for the sake of it. Which again is a shame considering that the rest of the characters are so well written.

There was no need for the songs, they hinder the follow of the movie and diminish the impact of other scenes. Lastly its a tad too long, needed to be edited down to 130 minutes or so.

Now onto what works, and there is a lot of it. For the most part, the story and dialogue are simple, real and have this raw, grounded feel to them, good job on the part of the writer/director Nitesh Tiwari. A shout out to fight choreographer as well, the wresting is very well done.

The performances across the board are spectacular. One of the best ensembles in years. The girls portraying the characters of Geeta and Babita (both old and young) are stars. Sakshi as the caring mother and the supporting wife, and Sanya as Babita are great but the movie belongs to Aamir followed by Fatima.

The best thing about Dangal is the character of Mahavir Singh Phogat played by ever brilliant Aamir. It is a towering performance, one of his career best. Phogat is selfish, flawed, ruled by his own desires, seeing his own glory in his daughters but real and human. That is what makes him so interesting to watch and follow. The physical transformation aside, its how he transforms into this flawed human being, who can't shake his past, has regrets; a father who is selfish, has to be strict but yet cares deeply for his daughters, that makes this an a tour-de-force.

The moments between Geeta (played by an impressive Fatima Sana Sheikh) and Mahavir, are stunning, in particular a scene where unwavering belief of a father clashes with the rebellious youth of the daughter, the build up and culmination is a joy to watch. And then the phone conversation where they both can't say anything, not a single word and yet it spoke volumes. Its is here, in moments like these, that the movie excels.

Its a joy to see such great female characters done so well. Dangal shows that it doesn't matter if your born male or female; its what you do with your life that counts. If you are willing to go all the way, despite the setbacks, the sacrifices that are bound to come your way; you will reach the stars.

Dangal could have been masterful had the writing been a bit more polished, and had Nitesh resited the temptation to throw in mainstream cliches and finally had the length been cut down by a good 20 minutes.

4/5.
