My thoughts;

Dangal is good, very good infact. Its the best movie of 2016, hands down. Do go see it.

I have problems with it though, suddenly it will do something that will just take you out of the otherwise gripping narrative. These things are frustrating because the rest of the screenplay is so good and does perfectly well without them. Why put them in just for four, five scenes and ruin it? Here it goes:

The story gets too melodramatic at points and overly patriotic especially towards the end. The climax has moments that are so good and then in there, so left field, you are stuck with cliches; like the whole situation between Mahavir and the coach. I don't know why they chose to do this but it just doesn't work.

The supposed bad guy in the coach is just bland, its like that caricature of a character was forced in there just for the sake of it. Which again is a shame considering that the rest of the characters are so well written.

There was no need for the songs, they hinder the follow of the movie and diminish the impact of other scenes. Lastly its a tad too long, needed to be edited down to 130 minutes or so.

Now onto what works, and there is a lot of it. For the most part, the story and dialogue are simple, real and have this raw, grounded feel to them, good job on the part of the writer/director Nitesh Tiwari. A shout out to fight choreographer as well, the wresting is very well done.

The performances across the board are spectacular. One of the best ensembles in years. The girls portraying the characters of Geeta and Babita (both old and young) are stars. Sakshi as the caring mother and the supporting wife, and Sanya as Babita are great but the movie belongs to Aamir followed by Fatima.

The best thing about Dangal is the character of Mahavir Singh Phogat played by ever brilliant Aamir. It is a towering performance, one of his career best. Phogat is selfish, flawed, ruled by his own desires, seeing his own glory in his daughters but real and human. That is what makes him so interesting to watch and follow. The physical transformation aside, its how he transforms into this flawed human being, who can't shake his past, has regrets; a father who is selfish, has to be strict but yet cares deeply for his daughters, that makes this an a tour-de-force.

The moments between Geeta (played by an impressive Fatima Sana Sheikh) and Mahavir, are stunning, in particular a scene where unwavering belief of a father clashes with the rebellious youth of the daughter, the build up and culmination is a joy to watch. And then the phone conversation where they both can't say anything, not a single word and yet it spoke volumes. Its is here, in moments like these, that the movie excels.

Its a joy to see such great female characters done so well. Dangal shows that it doesn't matter if your born male or female; its what you do with your life that counts. If you are willing to go all the way, despite the setbacks, the sacrifices that are bound to come your way; you will reach the stars.

Dangal could have been masterful had the writing been a bit more polished, and had Nitesh resited the temptation to throw in mainstream cliches and finally had the length been cut down by a good 20 minutes.

4/5.

I agree with the editing part and a few screenplay mishaps. They were my peeves too.

Nevertheless, a very good film overall and deserves resounding success.

some people are just nitpicking like for songs, are bhai all of them are in the background and are not even full songs of 4mins, just plays for few seconds like the naina and banna song.
The guy comes after 2yrs and you want the movie to be 2hrs long 😲 it wasn't like it was boring or dull even for a moment, at least for me it wasn't.

This was the best movie of the year and I personally found it better than CDI, although I don't like to compare but others have so yea there it goes.

would be unfair to compare it to lagaan, that was something else

It was a whole package, wasn't just about aamir, they showed the whole journey, I loved it, will watch it a few times more.

5/5 from my side, others can nitpick for all I care 😆

Now that im sober after a raucous night I can give my full review. 😆😆

I liked the film. Aamir was amazing. The wife was good. The girls were on point. I thought the 2nd half did drag. The whole coach angle was dumb. An did we really need to see 3 wrestling matches blow by blow. I would've been fine with them just showing the gold medal one. Or even 2 out of the 3. I liked the songs. I think they fit really well throughout the movie. I love the title song every time it played. The scene stealer for me was the nephew. Young and old he had the best lines and facial expressions. So that brings me to one plot point that might've changed the film and the true story. Why did it never occur to Mahavir to just make his nephew into a wrestler ???? I understand thats not his child but it seems like Mahavir as the head of the extended family made decisions for everyone. An eventually he even brings the guy to train with the girls. But he is just like a practice wrestler. But I guess its moot 😆😆. After Aamir and I really loved the performances of the 2 young girls. For me those were the best parts of the film. I actually think this is 2nd fav Aamir Christmas movie after 3I . It was better than D3, Ghajini and even PK for me. 😳😳

The Mahavir and Geeta wrestling scene is a masterpiece in itself which deserves a separate topic...We can probably discuss it at length after the first week of the movie just so that we don't spoil it for those who are yet to watch the movie!

That's because the kid (in his own words) doesn't have it in him...Even as a child he used to get beaten into pulp by his own younger cousins (who were just amateurs at that point)...

For the record, the real life Mahavir has coached and is still coaching all his daughters and the daughters of his brothers(and whoever else is interested from his village)...There are like 5 or 6 champions in that family now...:)

Just got back from the cinema 😊

Was half full in the hall, which was surprising.

I really enjoyed it, I thought the flow of the movie was perfect, the intro was good, the first half was great, the second half was good.

Aamir was amazing as usual, totally nailed his character, he played the strict farther perfectly and his body transformation was awesome, from young and ripped (So damn obviously steroids btw 😆) to his old and fat character (which I loved)

The two daughter were awesome too, I really liked the younger one (in their younger days) the first half had some hilarious scenes too, mostly of the girls and the nephew.

The second half was obviously a lot more serious which is why I preferred the first half, however that's not to take anything away from the movie as a whole. I thorroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. 👏

The Srk/Kajol/DDLJ scene was a nice touch too 😛

Overall I'd definitely recommend it (didn't want to put any spoilers)

8/10 for me. Deserves to be the biggest grosser of the year as it was by far the best (along with Fan)
