Frankly we expect better from Aditya Chopra. It will be unfair to expect the magic of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge from Aditya everytime but at least Mohabbatein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodee had some content to talk about. Those movies had their moments which made them winners at the box office.
Befikre politely put is Aditya Chopra's most shoddy effort till date.Vaani Kapoor's colossal charm and Ranveer Singh's extremely spirited effort cannot save this movie which tries too hard to remain youthful and breezy. The problem is roughly half an hour post the start the breeziness becomes stale and repetitive and the young generation's obvious and natural inclination towards physical side of love is repeated till it starts become boring.
Befikre does not have all bad, for one it has some extremely great songs particularly nashe si chadh gayi and ude dil befikre. The movie also suffers from a little DDLJ hangover you can find traces of ho gaya hai tujhko to pyaar sajna in the "je t'aime" song. Befikre has some great dialogues too and Sharat Katariya and Aditya Chopra can take due credit for that. However if dialogues could make a movie then Laal Baadshah would be a classic today.
Befikre clearly is a case of a director trying up to dish out content which the young generation of today is willing to lap up as much as the young generation of 1990s had lapped up DDLJ. But this time the content and screenplay of this movie totally fails Aditya Chopra.
The biggest let down of Befikre is the total absence of other powerful characters besides the main couple. DDLJ had a flood of characters besides Raj and Simran so did Mohabbatein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodee. After 135 odd minutes of Befikre you discover that there are just no other characters in this movie. Which is why the movie tends to drag and beyond the super well made first 25 minutes the screen gets repeatedly filled by these two characters and then unfortunately the shallowness of the screenplay totally kills the movie.
Befikre attempts a different approach to love and how modern generation believes in love in a different way from the previous ones. Unfortunately its climax is far more dud and boring then the most cheesy love story of the 1990s or 1980s.
Frankly if you were walking into a multiplex which had the choice of this one and Kahaani2 or Force2 I would seriously advise you to toss a coin between Force 2 and Kahaani 2. Assuming you have not seen any of these three. Avoid this dud.
One star that too because of the huge respect I have for Aditya Chopra's track record.

First published: December 9, 2016, 9:46 AM IST | Updated: 47 mins agoAditya Chopra, the man who has given India Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, has only worked with Shah Rukh Khan in his films. The backbone of Yash Raj Films, the man of few words, has made SRK a poster-boy of romantic films in Bollywood. His films are always heaped in Indian culture and more importantly highlights Punjab for its culture, locales.
So it is a refreshing change to see Chopra working with a new actor in his latest Befikre. Set in Paris, the film is a new-age rom-com featuring YRF's current favourite Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor. The film has grabbing eyeballs ever since its first poster started doing the rounds of social media. In all of them, the lead pair is seen kissing. The film is supposed to be about Shyra and Dharam who, although like each other's company, are not wanting to be in a long-term, serious relationship.
The film is being touted as the big release of the year with Aditya Chopra directing for the first time post his father, late filmmaker Yash Chopra's death. Will Aditya and Ranveer be able to make a hit film? Is Befikre in tune with today's idea of romance? Shomini Sen of News18.com was inside the theatre to find out.

9:45 AM: Aditya Chopra's first film without Shah Rukh Khan as the leading man. Will it work? We will find out #Befikre
10:03 AM: So @RanveerOfficial plays a 'Karol Bagh ka launda' who does stand up in Paris for a living. In hindi. Nice. #Befikre
10:07 AM: 'If you don't hook-up, you don't break-up' True that! ;) #Befikre
10:22 AM: .@RanveerOfficial has aced the Delhi boy character by now. First in Band Baaja Barat now #Befikre
10:51 AM: One hour into #Befikre and not a dull moment so far.
10:54 AM: Just as the trailers had promised, #Befikre is light and breezy in the first half.
11:34 AM: Ok the film is taking a predictable turn now. #Befikre
11:59 AM: A heartfelt talk with one of the parent right near the climax is a must in every Bollywood film, no? #Befikre
12:15 AM: #Befikre ultimately falls victim to predictable storyline. It's ultimately a Bollywood love story.
12:17 AM: First half is much fun. It's the second half that becomes predictable. #Befikre
12:18 AM: Vaani Kapoor delivers a commendable performance as Shyra. Looks stunning in almost all frames. #Befikre
12:19 AM: But ultimately #Befikre is an absolute Ranveer Singh show. He charms you as Dharam.
12:19 AM: You won't be able to see anyone else but @RanveerOfficial in the film. He has that strong a screen presence. #Befikre
12:20 AM: Dharam is goofy, mad and almost an extension of Ranveer himself. #Befikre
12:21 AM: #Befikre would have been far more enjoyable if the predictability had not seeped in the second half.
12:24 AM: If you are up for some light, romantic film #Befikre is your film for the weekend.
12:25 AM: If you are a Ranveer Singh fan, you would love #Befikre because Dharam is oh so charming.

Aditya Chopra. Probably the most famous man in India who cannot be identified by majority of the population. He has directed three movies so far and all of them have starred Shah Rukh Khan, and yes, all of them have been huge blockbusters. So were they such big hits because of Aditya? Befikre will provide the answers. The trailers and promos of Befikre make it seem like a bold, funny rom-com which is targeted at the urban youth. But does it have an emotional core too? No better time to find out than now.
Story: Befikre is a story that celebrates being carefree in love. A quintessential Delhi boy Dharam (Ranveer Singh) comes to Paris for work and in search of an adventure. Just when he was about to embark on this journey of his life he bumps into a wild, free spirited, French born Indian girl Shyra (Vaani Kapoor). A feisty romance ensues between the two in which both of their personalities- one being an equal match for the other are tested to the limit. Battling their ups and downs, both realize that love is a leap of faith that can only be taken by those who dare to love.
Screenplay and Direction: Befikre doesn't rely heavily on a story and on twists and turns. Befikre flows very fluidly from one half to another without losing any momentum inspite of the story being almost non-existent. The lead characters are spunky even with their idiocy when it comes to taking the important decisions. This is when the title of the movie makes sense. Befikre isn't supposed to be a morally uptight movie, it just aims to give us a story of two people in a very entertaining manner. Aditya Chopra spins the first half of Befikre craftily with almost no dull parts, but the second half lands in a Paris of predictability and clichs. But we don't mind that too much. Why? Because the aim was never to give us a meaningful tale of love.
Befikre has an almost 100% French crew and the way the film has been shot can rival any rom-com in the world. Paris has been shot gleefully with a lot of love by the cinematographer. The production design and costume design are top notch. Editor Namrata Rao has managed to keep the film to a respectable duration. The music of Befikre gets the mood of a Punjabi couple in Paris just right. Songs like Nashe Si Chadh Gayi and Ude Dil Befikre give Befikre a jolly musical attire. The opening credits song Labon ka Karobar sets the mood for the film.
Acting: Ranveer Singh navigates Befikre with an assured lan and poise. He deals with a mysognistic and homophobic character with such outlandishness that he makes it work without a sweat. He is fun personified and doesn't let go of his charm even in the emotional scenes. He is not Shah Rukh Khan, but he doesn't even need to be one. Vaani Kapoor gives a defiant performance which reeks of confidence and a deft understanding of her character. She never goes overboard with her expressions and manages to impress. The two of them make the film a swift Parisian cruise.
Conclusion: Befikre is the boldest movie Aditya Chopra has ever made, and even in his boldness he has made sure to not let go of his Punjabiness. The characters he has created are carefree and impulsive, and the urban youth will identify with these characters. Befikre starts off really really well with one of the breeziest first halves we have seen this year, and isn't able to hit those highs in the second half and falls into a trap of clichs. But Befikre deserves to be watched. Why? For the chemistry of the lead couple and for the director who has tried his level best to try something new even at the cost of coming across as brash.
Pros:
Cons:
The film is also a reinvention of Aditya Chopra as director.
Film: Befikre
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Vaani Kapoor
Director: Aditya Chopra
He calls her 'maa', she calls him 'havas ka poojari'. Dharam (Ranveer Singh) and Shyra's (Vaani Kapoor) romance in Aditya Chopra's Befikre breaks most stereotypes set by the genre. Opening with a break-up scene, the film quickly brings forth the quirkiness of these characters taking you on a back and forth journey that chronicles the sequence of events leading to the present day where the ex-lovers have now become awkward friends. Befikre's French setting is perfect to explore this bohemian idea of a no-strings-attached love story that takes a predictable yet delightful turn in the second half. Befikre is Aditya Chopra's breeziest film. The dialogues are sharp, the wit and the humour engaging. The lens playfully flirts with the iconic Parisian landscape. Despite the eye-catching distractions, the film manages to stay true to its genre as an entertaining romantic comedy" a genre our filmmakers haven't been able to get right.
Befikre is the reinvention of Aditya Chopra. If Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi proved that true love doesn't need validation or acceptance through a gimmick, Befikre explores the grey shades between friendship and love and the complexities that arise when they overlap. Adi manages to weave a contemporary love story and lace it with layers of old school romance. The setting might be Paris, but there are shades of that Delhiwala pyaar in many scenes. There is ample reference to his own work " that 'palat' scene with Vaani or her heartfelt chat with her mother at the kitchen counter, the epic dance-off between the lovers " Adi has his signature stamp all over Befikre.
Ranveer Singh's Dharam is a welcome break and return to form for the actor who's dabbled with some heavy duty roles in the last few years. What is endearing about Ranveer's performance is the fact that he manages to make you empathise and feel for his character. His best moments are scenes where he uses his gaze or silence to portray Dharam's heartbreak and inability to stay true to his emotions. He flashes more than his butt. Ranveer's emotional striptease has more appeal than his physical dare-to-bare act. Vaani is a revelation in the second half and she wonderfully balances and brings composure to her odd pairing with Ranveer. Who knew she was a great dancer? Dharam and Shyra's banter and realistic take on how crossing the thin line between friends to lovers can be destructive echoes a universal sentiment. Befikre has ample light-hearted moments and the dialogues sound like everyday conversations" "Abhi break up huh hai, so no phone calls please".
Issues start creeping in as the film inches towards a climax that doesn't necessarily spring a surprise. Dharam and Shyra's change of heart, their realisation of how they feel for each other and that fear of taking it to the next level seems rushed. What felt organic and natural in the first half feels a bit superficial in the second. The dares get repetitive and you lose interest when the scene oddly breaks into a song sequence to portray a character's state of mind. Befikre's climax is a risk and it partially pays off. To end the film with slapstick set against the backdrop of a wedding scene is hardly an original idea. What you miss post interval is the freshness and candid honesty of Dharam and Shyra who seem to be muffled under the heavy weight of filmy expectations.
Befikre proves that Aditya Chopra is a master storyteller when it comes to love stories. Watch it for Ranveer's easiest and most natural performance. A true romcom the film won't disappoint fans of the genre.
I am livid & FURIOUS if urinating scene in Udta was cut but RS was allowed to moon in front of the camera and got a UA certificate #BefikreWanderer @harditya94
Am I the only one who doesn't feel the excitement of an Aditya Chopra film releasing in theatres today?
Seems like a good start and advance booking Hopefully it will sustain a good run in its re release...
