Phool aur Kaante marked the debut of Ajay Devgn, son of stunt and action choreographer Veeru Devgan, and Madhoo, niece of actress Hema Malini. The film won Ajay Devgn, the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut for 1991.Akshay Kumar was signed for the film but was removed due to some reason.
Phool Aur Kaante was a Super Hit at the box office in India, and was noted for its soundtrack. the movie is loosey based on a Malayalam film Parampara (1990) starting Mammootty and Suresh Gopi. Phool Aur Kaante clashed with Yash Chopra directed Lamhe at the box office.Anil Kapoor told Ajay Devgn he shouldn't release the film on the same day,it will flop. However Phool Aur Kante proved to be a super hit, on the other hand Lamhe which starred Anil Kapoor bombed at the box office.
The YRF film was carrying great reports and trade buzz after special previews was that this film would be unstoppable at the box office. No one even knew a small film starring a fight master's son was releasing on the same day. Those who knew laughed at the audacity of the filmmaker. But the test was on the day of the release. Lamhe tanked at the box office and Phool Aur Kaante went on to become a major hit. Yashraj's film was replaced at many screens by the film of the newcomer no one had heard about. Devgn became an overnight star.
Phool aur Kaante made on a modest budget went on to do double (5cr) of Lamhe(2.5cr).
