Behind the mindless display of wealth in Karan Johar films

In the aftermath of the release of yet another typical KJo offering, we list a few instances of unexplained wealth from his movies that make us go "How? Why?" every time we see them.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

KJo's latest movie sticks to his trademark tradition and does not disappoint at all. As is the case with his every other film, it's grand without reason. Sample these instances:

We are filthy rich but we still get excited about hotel rooms

In one sequence of the film, Anushka Sharma's Alizeh and Ranbir Kapoor's Ayan land in Paris in a private jet but they share one hotel room since they cannot afford to buy two. Really?

Also the "private jet-type" rich Ayan and the "raees" Alizeh can't keep calm at the sight of their perfectly ordinary hotel room and launch into frenzied excitement at the prospect of a freshly-made bed, toiletries that they can steal and the 24-hour room service.

Unemployed but can afford an extravagant wedding

For a woman with no job and a passing interest in learning French and Bollywood dancing, Alizeh has a dream wedding in Lucknow, which her parents boycott. Her groom is a DJ of some international repute. It's picturesque and all very nice but what we did not get is how the couple was able to afford it. Because however they did it, we'd like to know just like millions of others.

The family mansion

Remember the imperial style Raichand Mansion in K3G, the house of the star-studded family? Now, according to the film's plot, it's supposed to be in Delhi. Here's how: The nanny to the Raichand sons, played by Farida Jalal, and Kajol's Anjali lived in Chandni Chowk of old Delhi. Now imagine such a sprawling mansion in Delhi. We know you can't because it is impossible to. Not even Sainik Farms can boast of such a property.

Student of the Year

Not-so-rich kids in a super expensive school

Remember the fabled St. Teresa High School from SOTY? A state-of-art institute, we are told it's one of a kind. We are also told that Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt's characters come from stinking rich families and so it makes sense for them to study there. But what about the other not-so-rich kids? Some of them may have come through scholarships but the film expressly depicts a few of them as duds. We still wonder how they landed at St. Teresa.

Unexplained businesses

The lead actors of KJo films almost always come from big business families (you've got to explain the grand sets and all the jazz that comes with it to some extent at least) but we are never really told what businesses any of them actually have. We know the Raichands of K3G, the Talvars of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, the parents of the lead actors of SOTY and Ai Dil Hai Mushkil have an insane amount of moolah but we never get to know what they really do.
